pò kÄi zì jÇ de / xiàng yíng zhe zì yóu de / wèi nÇ de chà nà chÅ« xiàn de / xiÇŽo hú dié

A small open field filled with baby roses, as if written full of legends, spreading out in the name of your eternity.

A small butterfly that breaks open itself, as if facing freedom, emerging for the sake of your fleeting moment.

飞过大城市 å»è¿‡æ‰€æœ‰é’¢ç‹

[it] flies past the big cities, kissing all the reinforcement steel,

Slowly flying into my heart.

It's nothing. There are countless little butterflies searching for little open fields,

Shouting everywhere "You, you, you......"

(Like countless wings swaying with majesty.)

(Like countless feelers touching the fine and smooth.)

Everywhere, [it] is you, you, you......

(Like countless compound eyes gazing upon the mysterious.)

(Like countless everything carrying life.)

Spring summer autumn winter, there is an additional season.

([it] is tenderly gentle, [it] is explosively magnificent.)

A season that exists when there is love.

(The air is a little more fragrant.)

Our night is a little longer.

(The sky is a little bluer.)

(The present will always [feel] a little [more] immediate.)

(The rainwater is a little sweeter.)

Our dreams are a little more numerous.

(The days are a little greener.)

The future is a little happier.

A kind of heat that can only be felt, almost unbearable, when even cravings are explosively magnificent.

A song that one can only believe and yet does not dare to believe, when all reminiscence is tenderly gentle.

Do [you] know that wonderfulness doesn't need the three poisons?

Whether or not [something] will exist, [it] was originally like this.

One just has to remember the tale of Master Zhuang[1].

The world is false to the point that it really seems as if only you, you, you......and I remain.

(Like countless wings swaying with majesty.)

(Like countless feelers touching the fine and smooth.)

Everywhere, [it] is you, you, you......and I.

(Like countless compound eyes gazing upon the mysterious.)

(Like countless everything carrying life.)

T/N:

[1] The whole dreaming and butterfly thing comes from åº„å‘¨æ¢¦è¶ (lit. Zhuang Zhou (the name of Master Zhuang) dreams of butterfly), a tale where the renowned Warring States period philosopher Master Zhuang had a very vivid and realistic dream of becoming a butterfly and forgetting that he was Zhuang Zhou. Only upon waking did he realize he was Zhuang Zhou. As such, was he Zhuang Zhou, who dreamed himself to be a butterfly, or was he a butterfly, who dreamed itself to be Zhuang Zhou? This was discussed in his philosophical writings and he was of the opinion that a person does not have the ability to distinguish between reality and illusion.

Thank you so much for translating this! I love how you added in the historical context with which the lyrics were inspired from, and the cultural aspect as well. I find that much of the poeticism and feeling is lost when translating between languages, but the way you do it is so beautiful and easy to understand. May I ask whether you are a linguist enthusiast or just really fluent in mandarin/english? Thank you again! I feel sort of bad for asking to translate only Khalil Fong songs, but his most recent album is so good, and my conversational mandarin just cannot wrap around some of his lyrics (especially if they have some back story that's rooted in Chinese culture, of which I know none  ).

A pleasure! It's both. English is my day-to-day operating language. And unlike the other languages that I dabble in, I would say I'm fluent in Mandarin. This feels kinda like I'm praising myself but I think what helps is that I have a certain degree of knowledge about the classical/poetic/idiomatic aspects of the language. I love Mandarin for its denseness and descriptiveness, and it draws upon such a large arsenal of beautiful poetry and historical tales, so I always try to share further layers of meaning to certain terms, additional context to help orient you guys, sources when I spot poetic samplings...

Don't worry about Khalil-only requests! We've had Jolin-only requests (the team has translated a huge number of her songs over the years), Yoga-only requests... Whatever you want to understand better!
