Chinese people believe the United States is the “top threat†facing their country, a new poll shows, with most suspecting the world’s number one economy of trying to “prevent China from becoming an equal powerâ€.

A survey by the Washington-based Pew Research Center revealed 45% of Chinese people consider US power and influence to be a “major threat†– more than economic instability (35%), climate change (34%) and Islamic State (15%).

However, half of the 3,154 respondents in the survey had a “favourable opinion†of the US – including 60% of those aged between 18 and 34.

The news comes as Beijing and Washington are at loggerheads over China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea, with the US urging China to adhere to the rule of law and Beijing accusing the Americans of interference.

The vast majority of Chinese people (75%) believe their own country plays “a more important role in world affairs†than a decade ago, compared with only 21% of Americans, 23% of Europeans and 68% of Indians.

However, this confidence in China’s international stature contrasts with a growing sense of unease among many, the survey showed, with about three-quarters of respondents saying their “way of life needs to be protected against foreign influence†– up from 64% in 2002.

Despite China’s increasing diplomatic influence, 56% of Chinese people said they wanted their leaders to focus on the country’s own challenges, such as official corruption, which most said was a problem.

Growing inequality is also a concern, with 37% describing the gap between rich and poor as a “very big problemâ€.

Other worries include: food safety (74%), the country’s choking air pollution (70%) and rising prices (74%), as many Chinese people struggle to get a foothold in the real estate market.

Well not surprise...China can't be number 1 superpower country when U.S still exist (cuz there can't be 2 countries with equal power co-exist peacefully together) and Chinese has that ambition since they already second most powerful country in the world, but the only way for that reality to happen is they have to go to war with us and that is when WW3 start, like with WWI and WWII fighting for power and building empire  :._.:

It doesn't matter if they become #1 interm of economy in near future but it's always the military power that is ruling and U.S extremely invest and inventive when it come to military.

Funny thing is U.S as a nation/people and our government tended to be really united when we have "clear" enemy or threat to our nation (like Russia and Germany before or 911 incident), but when during peace days, our government is extremely divided cuz of two dominant parties fighting for power in our government   But right now, there isn't clear enemy or threat that seen as evil for us yet, so poof we are divided as fuck  :imstupid:

“prevent China from becoming an equal powerâ€.

They're going to be in for a rude awakening when they realize they're under a communist government......

What's wrong with Communist? I see nothing wrong with that. Its better than using lies of "Democracy" and "Freedom" to invade another countries.

Red line is the border

"Japanese scholar Taoka Shunji criticized Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for trying to falsely portray China as a threat to Japan and that it was invading its neighbors like the Philippines. He pointed out that the Spratly islands were not part of the Philippines when the US acquired the Philippines from Spain in the Treaty of Paris in 1898, and the Japanese-ruled Taiwan itself had annexed the Spratly islands in 1938, a move that was never challenged by the US-ruled Philippines, which never asserted that it was their territory."
