Utada Hikaru easily tops Billboard JP and Oricon with 253k physical sales

With over 250,000 domestic physical sales, Utada Hikaru's new album, "Fantome," has debuted at #1 on the Billboard JP and Oricon weekly album rankings. The album is Utada's 8th consecutive debut at #1 and the highest opening week sales for a female solo artist this year. This is particularly strong opening week given there's only one regular edition to buy (no bonuses, deluxe editions, etc. as is common for Japanese albums). And the album remains the #1 best-seller on Amazon Japan and at Tower Records shops, hinting at a strong second-week showing.

Utada's success hasn't been limited to Japan: she's been the #1 trend on Melon, South Korea's biggest digital music store. The album also went #5 on iTunes US - the highest peak ever for a Japanese-language album - and charted even higher in other countries' digital music stores. Oricon doesn't track digital or international sales, so her actual first-week number is much higher than the reported 253,000. (Edit: I just found out she's #2 on Billboard's World Albums chart, behind Got7 which got #1. Congrats to them!)

Congratulations to Utada on her continued success!
