Do you cook tapioca before putting it in a pie filling?

Cause I was hesitant to put just uncooked tapioca into the recipe, vs. putting tapioca pudding. But then I realized that it would be stupid to put tapioca pudding in it.

Oh, you mean the tapioca pearls in bubble tea? I think it's better to cook them properly before putting them in pudding. It is even hard to get it swell up properly when you cook it, why would you put dry pearls in your pudding?  :)

No, I'm making pie. I have granular tapioca and I was hesitant to put it in (to thicken the pie)

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. So you wanted to use it as thickener, amirite? Just don't put tapioca flour directly into the pie, always mix it with ambient/cold water before you put it in your pie. My experience with tapioca as thickener is to always add it the last, because the heat can break down the texture that tapioca made. So, just enough heat to let it cook and as soon as you see it thickens, turn off the fire. Reheating will also make your mixture too watery. Good luck!

This.

Don't outright add it into your pie. Make sure you stir and blend it well too or else it'll turn out gross/chunky.
