minime 1,128
Egypt's National Council for Women will file a report with the state’s top attorney against a parliamentarian over his "offensive remarks against women in Egypt and abroad"...The council is also preparing a complaint to give to the speaker of parliament against the MP, requesting that he “undertake all the legal procedures against the MP according to the constitution and parliamentary bylaws to be investigated for his latest and previous remarks," Dina Hussien, a member of the council...Amna Nosseir, a female MP and a university professor in Islamic law, told reporters that "Agina's remarks represent an insult to women and public manners in Egypt." Ilhami Agina, an independent MP from the Nile Delta governorate of Daqahliya, said last week that girls hoping to attend university should first undergo a mandatory "virginity test." "Any girl who wishes to join university must undergo this test on a regular basis to prove that she is still a virgin," Agina said. "She also must submit a document that she is still a virgin in order to be officially admitted to the university." That was not the first controversial public statement by Agina, who said in early September that he voted against a new bill that made female genital mutilation (FGM) a felony, arguing that the FGM should remain in place to balance the "weak" sexual prowess of most Egyptian men. Earlier this year, the MP also said that female MPs should modest wear clothing inside parliament. http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/245014/Egypt/Politics-/Egypts-womens-council-to-file-complaint-against-MP.aspx

cyano 5
As far as i know nobody takes Ilhami Agina seriously, the rest of the Egyptian parliament ignores him regularly so i doubt this will pass And what has being a virgin or not has to do with the academic carrier of a girl why is this even asociated with each other ??? Sorry but some islamic countries need to step up their woman rights that's to much ! One MP doesn't represent a whole country opinion as well as other countries, conservative politicians say ludicrous stuff in the west all the time, that doesn't mean it'll ever 1. Be a law 2. BlinkleBee 2,701
How if she is married? Can't married woman go back to the university? I think in this case the woman is married so it's ok for her not being a virgin anymore
cyano 5
Please!! Don't Act like the Woman rights in some Islamic Countries are nearly non-existent That's not what i meant. I hope i don't sound passive aggressive and i apologize in advance, but how can you generalize and blame Egypt and other Islamic countries for not stading up against woman rights because of what Ilhami Agina said yet, as i wrote in my post above, you should know that the rest of the Egyptian parliament ignores him regularly and have indicated mutiple times their dissension with his views, especially when it comes to the FGM bill, as well as you can read in the article itself what was Egypt's reaction at his ludicrous proposal. Ilhami Agina's opinion doesn't represent Egypt's opinion as well as other countries opinion.

Sorry but some islamic countries need to step up their woman rights that's to much ! where were i generalizing ?? This last statement was a general one , couse mostly only in an islamic country i could imagine an opinion like this would exist , good for Egypt doesn't support that idea but on the other hand there are islamic countries that don't even allow woman to visit the university in general .. sorrynotsorry

Apart from the fact that i never heard of such bigotry, not even Saudi Arabia, the worst country when it comes to woman rights, forbid women to visit universities. Returning to the point, this time i'll try to make it as simple as possible (and i hope the tone don't feels accusatory to you) You said: Sorry but some islamic countries need to step up their woman rights that's to much ! Here, apart from blaming Egypt for not stepping up their woman rights (yet as you can read in the article itself they did in fact step up), you even tried to summon some other Islamic countries into the issue for something literally 1 Egyptian MP said. What those the other Islamic countries you were referring to have to do with what Ilhami Agina proposed? Nothing.
