Why do people still deny Nishino Kana's success?

Since Utada has come back, there have been a few discussions on who the top female soloist is now. Some say it is Namie, but then others with a more realistic picture of the current industry say Nishino Kana. But this is nothing new. International fans have been downplaying Kana's success this whole decade basically, even though she is the easily the biggest female soloist to debut in the past 10 years. I'm just reminded how a few years ago when Kyary's career wasn't dead and buried people were saying that she was topping Kana (she wasn't).

Do people not want to move on? Do people not want to look at today? Do people only want to look at their youth? Do people only want to look at what appeals to them as an international fan as opposed to the reality on the ground in Japan? I mean, if you look at the favorite artist polls that came out last year, this is the result for female soloists:

5. Utada Hikaru (-)
7. aiko (↓1)
14. Nishino Kana (↑14)
15. Namie Amuro (↓3)
17. miwa (↑6)
20. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (↑1)
22. Superfly
28. Shiina Ringo
29. YUI
36. JUJU
37. Leo Ieiri
39. ZARD
41. Miyuki Nakajima
43. ayaka
44. Ohara Sakurako
46. YUKI
49. Taylor Swift

And then when it comes to ages:

10s:
4. miwa
6. Nishino Kana
8. Ohara Sakurako
10. YUI
14. Leo Ieiri
19. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

20s:
4. Utada Hikaru
5. aiko
13. Nishino Kana
18. YUI
19. Namie Amuro

30s:
4. Utada Hikaru
5. Namie Amuro
13. aiko

17. Superfly

40s:

17. Akina Nakamroi

I don't deny it, I just don't like it...I think what she does is so plain...I've seen other ladies do it dozens of times before, I find it uninspired and frankly kinda boring...I'd rather have a female star do something unusual and exciting and sell 10K copies than something predictable and boring and sell 500K

People always deny Kana Nishino success.I really like think people should move on and let new faces take over

Exactly. People talk about how stuck the scene is today, but then they're also the ones who can't move past last decade.

I don't deny it, I just don't like it...I think what she does is so plain...I've seen other ladies do it dozens of times before, I find it uninspired and frankly kinda boring...I'd rather have a female star do something unusual and exciting and sell 10K copies than something predictable and boring and sell 500K

The thing is though is that there are new females out there doing unusual and exciting things and not selling that much, but because they're not trying to be like Namie or Ayu or Kuu, international fans don't care. That just isn't the template to follow anymore. The girls that are doing interesting things are more on the indie side.

Was there a recent argument about this? I see international kpop fans bring her up a lot as their favorite j-artist.

It's happening right now in some other threads.

I remember my sister said that if you listen to J-pop, you can't not know Nishino Kana.

Edit: She has really been big ever since To Love. It was such a nice album

tbh I only knew of Kana Nishino because someone on Youtube made some mash-up of her song Motto with Sayuri Sugawara (who I was a casual fan of)'s Kimi ni Okuru Uta, which prompted me to check out the entire song. Motto was what got me started on her music.

Did Ayu seriously not even rank on that list? Well, shit...

And yeah Kana's new music fucking sucks but anybody who knows what they're talking about knows that Kana is the top female soloist of today. People are never going to get around to admitting it's true tho. Just like how people still deny that IU is the top female soloist in Korea

Ayu is DONE. I remember hearing that people are literally embarrassed to admit that they like her or Koda Kumi.

I mean Koda Kumi I get bc her image is pretty polarizing. But Ayu? Like I get that she's a huge mess in the public's eyes, but I'm surprised people aren't even willing to admit they like her for solely her old hits.

In  her golden days throughout 2000 she had the charisma of a female high school student, and the things that Ayu has done and accomplished are already a cultural phenomenon! Various things are said about her but I think she is an utahime who built a generation â˜†

Now Ayu doesn't have the same vigor as before, but when I was in elementary and middle school wherever you looked on TV there was Ayu, and even the girls around me were all about Ayu! And it was amazing. She really had amazing charisma~ No one can surpass her so I really think that's amazing!

Honestly I think she has a completely different status than the current boom of AKB and the like..

I'm also still LOLing at the responses I get from Japanese when I ask if they like idols.

It's like "Ehem.........." or "Ahah No"

But hey.

We judge Japanese people who stan Ariana and Taylor too.

As someone who doesn't like or dislike her, she has a... Taylor Swift vibe? I think it's easy to dismiss artists like her because her fanbase, musical identity and everything seems to skew young and not that mature. When I run into discussion of her on Japanese sites, I see people complaining about how her image never changes and her lyrics all sound the same, so maybe international fans don't click with her for similar reasons. I definitely don't think she's as immediately gripping as an artist as some of the more prominent Japanese "divas" who are/were more into reinventing themselves and consistently challenging new styles.

It's sad that they still do...

as much I as like her, I do think that it's sad her music has changed so much from what they were when she first debuted.

Being one of the first jpop soloists I listened to when I first started, it's sad that I don't get to hear the same music from her anymore. I'm glad she's successful, but I miss her old jams.

The only current female artist I listen to is Bjork nowadays. The other girls are just slaves to male producers and their penises.

Who?

She's basic, and a lot of youth is basic now.

And why do you think international fans don't really follow aiko, even though she is the only 00s female soloist outside of Utada, Namie, and Ringo to still have success?
