Is there anything more rewarding than being able to give someone happiness? Shouting "today and tomorrow, OhBliss!", girl group OhBliss has put in its name the aspiration to give incredible happiness to the public through music. Wishing to make music that brings comfort to a sad person and more joy to a happy one, OhBliss has just made its first steps.

Q: What does the name OhBliss mean?
Mei: It's a combination of "Oh", the exclamation for surprise, and "Bliss", which means a great happiness. This name carries the aspiration to give incredible happiness through music.

Q: Please introduce yourselves.
Mei: I'm OhBliss leader and vocalist Mei. Our CEO came up with this name. It has multiple meanings: "May" because I was born in May, and it's also "beautiful" in Chinese.
Inhwa: I'm rubber ball [?] maknae Inhwa. I'm the lead vocalist. Inhwa is my real name (laughs).
Yeonjoo: I'm OhBliss like-an-angry-cat rapper Yeonjoo. I'm using my real name too.
Roa: I'm OhBliss chocolate main vocalist Roa. There are many things I want to show in performances, and I have been nicknamed "chocolate" because I was said I have a sweet voice.
Chunglyn: I'm OhBliss ice princess Chunglyn. OhBliss members gave me this nickname because I freeze easily [?]. I'm trying to change, as I'm shy with strangers.



Q: What kind of song is your first single "Bunny Bunny"?
Inhwa: It's a song that expresses the mind of a woman who wants to approach the opposite sex with fun. There's a sexy feeling hidden in the youthful cuteness. The lyrics are funny and the melody is addictive. Once you hear it, you'll want to keep listening.

Q: Do you have a key point in the choreography?
Mei: We have two in the chorus. There is the "rabbit dance" where we put the hands on top of our heads and flip them like rabbit ears, and the "pounding dance", where we show the heartbeat spreading hands over the chest. It is a very cute dance (laughs).

Q: Before the debut, teaser pictures were released in sequence on the official SNS, did you check it yourself? When the teasers were released, you must have been really excited.
Yeonjoo: My picture was released first. When, while practicing, I heard that our teaser had been released, I looked on SNS, and I was both thrilled and embarrassed. I wanted to debut as soon as possible.
Chunglyn: My picture was released fourth. I was waiting for it, but I didn't realize immediately that my photo was made public, so I kept looking for a while before realizing it.
Inhwa: My picture was the last. I heard the news while I was shooting a web drama, and I went to check it immediately during the break. Fortunately, the photo came out pretty (laughs).



Q: You still haven't had your debut stage. I guess you're looking forward to that day.
Roa: I'm flickering and trembling tremendously. Compared to other people who waited for a long time before debuting, the time I’ve trained could be considered short, but I really want to pour everything I have prepared in the first stage.
Mei: When I meet a person I like, I don't feel like my heart would explode. I imagine I won’t experience things like having empty mind and not knowing how time passed.

Q: How long was your training period?
Roa: When I was young, I was in the dance team of a broadcaster. While doing that, I stood on Lee Hyo-ri seonbae's stage, and I went to the concert of Sung Si-kyung and Park Hyo-shin. I appeared in MBC "Infinite Challenge" festival. I was on the stage during "Apgujeong nallari" and "Gangbuk Gentleman" (laughs). Seeing them made me so happy, and I decided that I wanted to become a singer. I spent 4-5 years as a trainee.



Inhwa: My father is a CF director, and, since I was a child, he shot me a lot with the camera. Singing and dancing in front of the camera made me naturally dream of becoming a singer. I'm also greedy for acting. Recently I got a good opportunity and I'm playing the main character in the web drama "A Touch on Your Cheek".
Chunglyn: I was a childhood model when I was a child, and, in junior high school, I was attracted to dance. I also have an aunt who writes, and I think she influenced me. I have been a trainee for 5-6 years.
Yeonjoo: I started to dream of becoming a singer in high school. I wrote more than 10 letters to convey my sincerest desire to my parents and get their permission. My parents, who knew I really wanted to sing, sent me to a school, and after that I started practicing. I moved company a few times before meeting my current members at our agency.
Mei: I've been in this agency for about a year. I wanted to be a singer since I was a child, but my parents' objection was severe. So I worked as a model while preparing by myself. My father played music, I learned a song and then I joined a dance team. Eventually, I started doing what I wanted to do.



Q: You all have spent at least one year as a trainee. Were there inspirational words for hard times?
Inhwa: There's something that our CEO says a lot. "Don't think that you can't do something, at least try once". It's like the motto of our company (laughs). The CEO is passionate and we receive good stimulations. I endured my trainee days with a challenging spirit.
Chunglyn: Nothing is impossible! (laughs)

Q: Take turns and praise each other.
Inhwa: Yeonjoo eonni laughs well. It's positive. [inhwa then says something about playing piano and having the absolute pitch. I think she’s still talking about Yeonjoo]
Yeonjoo: Chunglyn eonni is diplomatic with adults and friendly. She wants to learn acting. She's the mother of our team.
Mei: Roa is a dance teacher. She has a keen eye for choreography and learns it immediately, and then she teaches it to us.
Roa: Mei eonni has charisma. I also envy her face (laughs). Usually women think of themselves, but Mei eonni takes care of us first. She's really caring.
Chunglyn: Inhwa has lots of expressions. This tells a lot about her talent in acting. Seems like she's greedy for CF, too (laughs).



Q: What music do you listen to? I guess you have different tastes.
Yeonjoo: I like groovy songs. R&B hip-hop is my favourite genre. I think I have groove hidden inside me (laughs). I like pop a lot. I like Rihanna’s, Beyoncè’s, Drake’s music. I would like to meet them someday.
Chunglyn: I like listening to OSTs a lot. Seems like the feeling is doubled when the song is mixed with a drama scene. Our members say that my voice is sad, and I want to challenge OSTs someday.
Roa: I like music of various genres. I choreographed songs for a long time so I like dancing songs, but I like ballads too. I also like Urban Zakapa’s and Sweden Laundry’s lyrical songs.
Inhwa: I like R&B hip-hop and ballads too. I like Crush seonbae's songs. But my voice is thin, so I don't know if it would work (laughs).
Mei: I like ballads. The producer told me that I have a sad voice when I sing. So, like Chunglyn, I want to record the OST of a heart-warming drama.

Q: What is the goal of this album?
Roa: "Bunny Bunny" is an addictive song and the goal is to have as many people as possible addicted to it (laughs). I would like many people to listen to it a lot, to sing it a lot, and to get to know OhBliss naturally. Starting with "Bunny Bunny", we would like to show our various music and colours in the future.



Q: Does OhBliss have a role model?
Mei: Wonder Girls are our role models. I've been listening to their music since my childhood. It's also nice to try different things in every album, and this is the part I want to resemble. Next year, Wonder Girls will celebrate their 10th anniversary, and it's not easy for a group to last ten years. We want to be a long-running group with much popularity like them.

New girl group OhBliss special moments

They debuted one month ago. Happy rookie girl group OhBliss (Mei, Chunglyn, Yeonjoo, Roa, Inhwa), delighted even by small things, says its “happy moment is nowâ€. Of course, without hard work, it’s a lie. But now, in the moment of the debut they have dreamed so much, nothing seems to make OhBliss depressed.

 

OhBliss, who is promoting its debut song "Bunny Bunny", visited <Focus News> for an interview recently. Although it may be awkward to change environment, the members' faces were full of anticipation and excitement rather than tension or fear.

 

I have met many new people, but the OhBliss members were definitely bright. The reason was simple. Members said “There are moments of hardship and exhaustion, but we share those moments together. And all of this is what we've been dreaming of, so it's just funny and happyâ€.

 

OhBliss, which combines interjection “Oh†and English “Blissâ€, means “to give amazing happiness through music". But, before that, it expresses the mind of the members who are happy to make music.

 

The group’s role model is Wonder Girls. “It’s because we want to be a group that has been playing music for a long time, and gives comfort to the depressed person and more joy to the happy person". If you want to bring long lasting happiness to someone, first you have to be happy. So I asked the members when they feel happy. Various happy moments flowed out from their mouths.

 

First, Chunglyn cited a moment when she was impressed by the members. “The moment I felt happy was when I was sick. I went to the hospital because my body was sick, but the members were more upset and worried than me. My body was sick at the time, but I felt happy rather than sad because I had colleagues who could share this with meâ€, she said with tears in her eyes.

 

Following Chunglyn’s confession, Mei recalled a visit to Wolmido with the other members when they were trainees. “Last summer, practice ended early and I went to Wolmido with my members. I had fun watching the sea, and taking pictures with the concept ‘after 5 years’. It’s a memorable memory with my members, so I remember it clearly as a happy momentâ€, she explained.

 

With five members constantly talking, Roa chose the meal time as her happiest moment. Spreading the wings of her imagination, she said “All of us really love eating. The pressure of having to weigh in the morning and in the evening is significant. Then, because stress accumulates, I decided to create a ‘Delicious Food Day’, when I can be happy and eat what I haven’t been able to eat in the meantimeâ€.

 

The happiest moment for maknae Inhwa was at the time of the first recording. "I practiced every day and I could not believe I made my debut. But it was very strange that I made my first recording and I could listen to it. I was happy and felt I made my debut again. Actually, when we released our first single on music sites, I was excited and shouted", she remembered.

 

Yeonjoo said the moment she was on stage and realized she was a singer was her happiest moment. “Being on stage makes you feel the most that you are a singer. So the moment you stand on the stage, you can say that you are happier than anyone else. And the fans double the excitement. At our first music broadcast, there were 7 fans, but then they became 70 and I was so happy I almost cried while dancingâ€, she said, expressing her gratitude.

 

Having just started their career, OhBliss has still a lot of happiness to taste. They said “It was difficult because we debuted later this year, but we will work harder and let you know our name next year. The Makestar project was fully funded, so I am hopeful that they are working on producing their single for that project.  They got close to 200% on it so there should be a few extra won for them to spend on it.

 

As usual, I will end up buying the digital release rather than wait for the Makestar reward album to show up.

 

I am very happy to see ChungLyn is still with the group.  So many times the "health issues" story is a cover-up for a member leaving a group.  In this case it looks like it was truly just temporary health issues.

Yes - the Makestar project was fully funded (189% I think).  Still nothing.  I checked Makestar's FAQ page and there is no policy on what happens when a project creator fails to deliver on their promises after receiving the funding.

That's super frustrating.  You can't have fans pay for a comeback IN ADVANCE only to just blow them off.
