Why Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is entertaining and empowering at the same time

After just 4 episodes, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon starring Park Bo YoungJi Soo and Park Hyung Sik  off to a great start taking its place among JTBC’s most popular dramas! An eccentric and entertaining romance comedy, the drama promises a fantastic ride for viewers who are looking to relax and enjoy a lighthearted drama that is breaking conventions with every episode. However, there also seems to be another – more serious – message embedded within the hit drama’s narrative. Just what is this message and how is it empowering both women and youth in South Korea? Hear it from the producer himself!

Despite their individual popularity, the cast of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is defying the normal rom-com fantasy expectations with a comedy that breaks all rules, adding to the show's tremendous entertainment value.

The popularity of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is easy to understand for anyone who has watched the show. Not only does the cast include big names like Park Bo Young and Park Hyung Sik, but the story itself is both charming and engaging.

However, the drama’s producer, Song Won Seob, has some ideas of his own when it comes to the show’s apparent popularity. Naturally, Song admits that:

“It’s a drama that viewers can watch and laugh about in a very relaxed way. It lets viewers vicariously experience something new through the show.â€

However, he quickly goes onto explore a more socially critical aspect of the drama:

“Although the basic backdrop of the show is a romantic comedy, the characters aren’t just falling in love and dating since Do Bong Soon is basically Wonder Woman. There are many occasions in our society in which women are overlooked or undervalued, despite their skills and abilities. At first, Do Bong Soon’s inability to reveal her true strength to the world is an instance of this. Furthermore, there are moments in which women are confronted by dangerous and problematic people whom they do not or feel they cannot fight back against as women; however, viewers are able to live vicariously through Do Bong Soon as she puts these people in their place with her abilities.â€

Further explaining why young people can also relate to Do Bong Soon, he adds

“There are many young people out there who have great talents but don’t know how or where to use them. Similarly, Do Bong Soon’s strength is something she has not found a true purpose for as of yet. As the narrative unfolds, she will realize how she needs to be using her abilities, marking a turning point in the drama.â€

What do you think about the points Producer Song brings up? Does the drama successfully reflect a message of empowerment for women and Korea’s youth?

Make sure to catch up on the last four episodes of ‘Strong Woman Do Bong Soon before the next episodes air this Friday and Saturday!

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 3

photo826912.jpg

"Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" is a crazy mix of silly, danger, romance, and the unbelievable. Since Bong-soon fought the gangsters, her strength has been difficult to control. Combine that with her new job for Min-hyeok, Gook-doo's out-of-control worry, and an incongruent but very dangerous kidnapper/murderer on the loose, this show has gotten pretty exciting very quickly.

The number one aspect of the show that stuck out in episode 3 was the physical humor. Grown men pee themselves in fear of her; chryons depict humorous mutterings; Min-hyeok and Bong-soon bicker incessantly; Bong-soon believes Min-hyeok is gay. All of these things collide to create a Monty Python-esque tone. While it is fun for most of the episode, every once and a while it became too much. There is only so much drooling and urinating I can take before it becomes excessive.

photo826910.jpgphoto826908.jpg

Family is an important emphasis of the show - messed up family. Bong-soon obviously has the supernatural element in hers. Compound that with an every day worry of her pristine mother that Bong-soon's super-strength will keep her single and we get a mother who promotes promiscuity when every other Korean mother would balk in horror. The mother treats Bong-ki differently and the obviously preferential treatment is highlighted. Min-hyeok's family is based in shady, competitive dealings that have definitely made Min-hyeok suspicious and worried for his safety. These family stories are still being fleshed out, but they are definitely interesting. I'm wondering how they will later collide.

Park Bo-young is, as always, absolutely charming and her chemistry and onscreen rapport with Park Hyung-sik is amazing. I'm looking forward to romance happening. Ji Soo's character hasn't given him much to work with, but it's clear he is a strong presence. The villain is still mysterious, unknown and terrifying in this thrill in the chase. I'm still having trouble reconciling the darker tone with the comic book-like depiction of Bong-soon's powers and her relations with victims of her power. I know eventually it will manifest in relation to Min-hyeok.

I'm liking all the characters (except that bad guy and maybe that girlfriend) even the thug boss is funny

All the gangsters are funny  I find the gf weird, like, she has a bf but she went out to eat with Bong Ki (sure, it's to thank him for his care but still) Edited by PLAY UGLY

Hey y'allll! So as long as I have been watching kdramas & the amount of dramas I have watched ( what's priorities, hmm  i wouldn't know), this is actually my first time posting in a drama thread laugh.png

I was watching Hwarang and got so frustrated I had to wait for the last 3 ep that I just ended up watching SWDBS. Not gonna lie, I highkey started watching it bc of Hyung Sik but yeah this drama is quite refreshing and I really enjoyed it so far. I didn't expect the serial killer/crime plot cause it was fluffy and light at first but I actually don't mind it ( Criminal Minds/Mentalist fan here, so yeah I appreciate the crime aspect of the show haha). I also love the side characters esp the thug w/ the broken teeth laugh.png  ( He & Bong Soon's dad were in Hwarang with Hyung sik :)

The main leads gave good chemistry and omg Hyung Sik is killin' it lately, he's such a natural I'm really glad he finally got a male lead role rlytearpls.png Wiish more people were watching the drama!!!

I love Jisoo, but I do find his acting a bit stiff and awkward, hoping it will get better as the drama progresses.

And now I impatiently wait for the new eps, ugh I should've waited to binged watch the drama.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 4

photo826973.jpg&key=5917e8bdf6863aa3be50

As we get to know our main characters better and the kidnapper snags another unfortunate woman. Bong-soon is definitely having to re-examine her super powers and her personality under this new employment, but she is not yet seriously involved with self-reflection. Min-hyeok, on the other hand, seems to take things lightly, but there is a dark side to his experiences that make him a weighty character.

Min-hyeok is the meatiest character thus far with a backstory we can sympathize with and an adorable crush on the very unusual Bong-soon. Hyung-sik plays the quiet beats with grace and is just as savvy with comedy. My only quibble with Min-hyeok (and the other main leads) is that he seems to change personality based on plot needs. I'd like for them all to have a more solid trajectory that took them out of caricature mode. Bong-soon is cute, but there is only so long her selfish outlook on life will carry her. She should know better than to get drunk with her powers. I'd like to see the truly difficult side of bearing powers because as of right now that aspect has only been joked about. Also, with her sloppy secret-keeping and constant public displays of Herculean strength, there is no way she can keep her powers secret for long.
