I loved the art form and to me it was more than just the standard "humans with big eyes" stereotype. I loved that characters drawn in manga and anime could have so many expressions that viewers ccould relate to. Every panel you could tell what the character was thinking from the typical sweat drop to the pulsing vein. And of course, the amazing attention to detail whther it be the deep colorful eyes or long flowing hair, or elaborate outfits.. I just loved everything about it. There was a point in time where I even aspired to be a comic book artist. I would draw for hours and hours at night and stay up late to finish lining or coloring my pictures instead of doing school work. I joined forums where people would post their art and made many online friends. I experimented with copic markers and for a while they were a staple to my artistic arsenal. Over the years, I'd like to say I improved on my anatomy, shading, and coloring. My style has definitely changed and even now it's still changing. My drawings lean toward more "realistic" anime and I've had people tell me some of my more recent work has hints of Disney influence. So without further ado, let's start from back about 10 years ago! First stop | My Neopets Phase I know, I know.. neopets? Whatever the faeries were hot. Light Faerie Back in the day I thought this drawing was the shit. Looking back.. it really was.. just shit. Terrible lining in the arm (are those fingers?), the one boob, and super far apart eyes. My Koi Neopet It's good that you don't get graded on how well you take care of your neopets because this one was my fav and got all my attention. I actually fed it, played with it, etc. I drew this for the beauty contest and it got an gold trophy! I personally like this drawing and I'm still proud of it but the problem is, it isn't my style. I straight up copied neopets and it wasn't my own interpretation. Hubrid Nox As if I couldn't get any nerdier, I was in a role play guild (my first online friends 8D) and one of my friends on there loved Hubrid Nox. So this was his birthday present. Again, not my own style but just a copy of neopets'. Fyora Day I drew this for Fyora Day and I remember being SUPER pressed that it wasn't chosen for the art gallery. Looking back I can see why it wasn't XD. The eyes are still too far apart and my lines are still super sloppy. The hair highlights look really unnatural as well. After a year or two my friends and I got bored of neopets and we moved to Gaia which led to... Stop Two | My Gaia Phase I noticed I was pretty good at copying other styles but I didn't set out to be a copy cat. I felt gaia was the perfect place to pratice drawing people with all the crazy avatars so I started taking requests to draw people's avatars. I did it for free and didn't charge money, how gracious of me, right? n_n OOPS fanart Please take a moment with me an LOL at the hands. Anyway this was actually fanart for my friend's comic, not something on Gaia but since it drew it around the same time I figured I'd put it here. I think her top looks cute. Halloween Guy I think the metal dog turned out really well. My lining is getting better here but I still think I could have switched it up and played around with thicker lines. Ten steps backward.. This just needs to be put in my black box of things that never existed OTL. I tried to draw a cute chibi character but lesson learned is chibi characters MUST have huge doe eyes or it looks so wrong. I also learned that I really suck at shading with dark colors and needed more practice with that. You'll start to notice I'm gonna void drawing hands as much as possible from here on out. Moving on. Shocker Cat Lady You can see here that I'm starting to play around with thicker lines. A lot of fails doing on in this drawing.. Note how I hid the feet under a pillow to avoid drawing them XD 2nd Cute Attempt Neopets fans, do you recognize the Nova Pop? keke. After the whole face disaster with shocker cat lady I just gave up on drawing noses in general. My lines are SO sloppy in this pic and if I still had it in my drawing pad I'd go back and clean it up. Overall it's not bad. NOT Sexy Librarian My anatomy is so _/. Everything from the arms down just doesn't look right. My lines still look sloppy and the only saving grace of this pic is the hair. You can see that I'm starting to play around with different textures and patterns in clothing here Some Hawaiian Bimbo And my streak of horrible anatomy continues... lines are still sloppy but getting better. Honey Thighs 7,431 Posted January 6, 2014 Author Share Posted January 6, 2014 Stop Three | More Fanart and Flowers After the failure of bad anatomy and nose problems, I stopped taking gaia requests for a while and decided to practice with fanart for my friend's webcomic as well as draw flowers... Mom's Birthday Present I decided to turn my attention to inanimate objects and we had this vase with really nice flowers so I decided I'd give it a try. I don't think it turned out too bad, I'm definitely better at drawing something when I use a reference. Basic flower being rejected by the favs This was for an art war that I got dragged into. The theme was "give an inanimate object emotion". With my last success of drawing flowers I decided to draw a plain flower being left out int he rain while the pretty flowers got cover. I'm still pretty proud of this picture and I think the reflections in the water turned out well. Domestic Violence couple I wanted to draw anime again so I referenced a scene from Love Hina for anatomy. I liked how this turned out but hot damn the feet are still ugly. I started to play around more with line thickness here and I'm getting much better with shading black hair. More OOPS fan art This is Kara, the same girl with the nice top in the other fanart for my friend. My first pencil shading. Even more OOPS fanart Hands and fingers are showing a lot of improvement but anatomy is still whack at parts. My lines are finally getting so much smoother but they get awkwardly thick at some points. I really like the clothes I gave them though, I bet you're jealous you can't have them Stop Four | Back to Gaia Growing more confident in my drawings I decided to go back to Gaia and try to draw a few more avatars. I feel like I really got a good grip on faces in the next few pictures Wolf Girl Still hated drawing hands.. cue hand disappearing into the dress awkwardly XD. I feel like I got better at making line flow more smoothly here but I still don't have a good grasp on how to draw natural wrinkles in clothing. Rocker Couple I relapsed back into bad anatomy . Everything form the waist down is just awful. This was a huge step backwards and I feel bad for whoever I gave this to XD Green Fairy Dat pointy ass. Other than that, I like how this turned out. Note how I still have hands and feet hidden lol My Own Avatar I decided I was too much free charity and decided to draw my own avatar. Since i was still trying to work out anatomy issues I just didn't even draw the lower half and left out hands completely. My first attempt at coloring a sparkly dress. My hands and anatomy could still use some work but I felt like my lining and coloring had improved drastically. Christmas Present This was for my manager at Hollister. My only complaint is the unnaturally wrinkle free clothing Zac Efron I decided it was time to practice drawing guys. And I chose Zac because I thought he had cool hair back in HSM days rofl. I decided to try drawing a nose differently this time so that's why it looks weird. I didn't like how most anime noses were just a dot or a line so I wanted to try shading them. Not bad for my first try but improvements can be made. Portrait This is a portrait of my friend whose web comic I've been drawing fanart for. Awkard hand but I like everything else about it. This was for an audio radioplay I did with my cousins (I was pretty big into voice acting before I got into kpop). There are so many great things about this drawing from the smooth lines, the girls' dresses actually looking sparkly, and hey, the hands aren't too bad? TO this day this is still definitely one of my favorite drawings. I'mt not sure if you guys can tell here but I tried to make all the characters have different skin tones. More original characters I really played around with different outfit designs here and even tried to give this character make up LOL. The amount of Michelle Phan tutorials I had to watch to do that.. OTL. More Character sketches I had a lot of ambitions for that audio radioplay but just like these drawings, they never got finished. Oh well. Maybe I'll finish them up someday but I'm pretty proud how I can draw people together and make them look different and not all the same which tends to happen in anime drawings Stop Six | Present Day Making this thread I kinda of realized I stopped drawing for a while.. like I'd go months - a year without drawing anything Art and piano used to be such a big part of my life and they were at times my escape from real life issues. Now that I'm busier than ever and closer and closer to reaching my professional career goals, I barely pick up the pencil at all. My new years resolution is to pick it up again at least once a month. So anyway, here are my most recent drawings (in the past year or two) First attempt at a comic strip My family and I went on a Disney Cruise and my goal was to capture fun moments in short comic strips but this was the only one that ever came to fruition. I totally ditched my anime/disney fusion style and went from something more cartoonish. Friends This was just something random I drew for my groupmates at school. I really tried to make everyone's faces look different. That's me in the middle (looks nothing like me though XD). Legend of Korra fanart This is my take on the Mako, Korra, and Bolin and I'm pretty proud of it I drew these on 3x5 notcards individually and then photoshopped them together So there you go! I've also changed my art style over the years and I drew allot of women to get better at carving out my own style when it came to Anime/Manga. I know it takes allot of guts to showcase the early works since they feel so amateurish. So I clap for you *clap* Maybe when the time comes I'll do this too. You mentioning how you've kind of stopped drawing really makes me think about how much I haven't. It used to be such a huge part of my life and it's weird to think that I don't do it anymore. I don't think I've really drawn anything in a good couple of years. Lately I've really missed it, and especially started to the last half of last year, but just never put forth the effort. I'd really like to try more again. But now I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start, and even more so don't know if I'm prepared to deal with my own frustration if I have problems with something again since I've gone so long. Whenever I used to show people my stuff they'd always ask "why are the boobs so big" OTL. Anatomy is hard D: I try watching youtube videos because I'm too poor for real art classes *sobs*. Favserivce ruined me so big boobs is my crutch lol. I've done allot of basic face shots but I did try to expand into more complex positions. You seemed to be allot better at it then me when I started. I love this -- thank you for sharing it!!! That's what I get nervous about! and I know realistically speaking I'll feel unfamiliar with some things and be clumsy and not make the right choices, but I know I'll get frustrated more knowing that I used to know that right choice to make or that if I stuck with it, I'd make even better ones. I think the hardest part is really getting started. And then doing it more and more, it'll become more natural to do so. I wish you luck getting into it again.
