minime 1,128
A worldwide association of writers has said religious insult laws must be repealed without delay following the assassination of a Jordanian writer arrested for posting a cartoon deemed offensive to Islam. Salil Tripathi, Chair of PEN International's Writers in Prison Committee, said: "Hattar’s murder is the latest in a string of killings of writers for alleged religious reasons...Use of these laws is making targets of writers, cartoonists, journalists and others who are merely exercising their right to freedom of expression." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/nahed-hattar-assassination-jordan-pen-religious-insult-laws-repealed-writer-killed-sharing-cartoon-a7330351.html ------------- OP: Please don't use this to gang up on one religion, but discuss about the validity and implications of such laws. ì–‘ 지 10,015
I was going to say that the OP is being surprisingly very rational and non judgmental for once before I saw that it's not the faceless user that we all love (and hate?). Anyways RIP, I'm glad I have the freedom of speech here. I'm glad they are progressing.

delirium 4,237
Unfortunately, we live in a world where more and more people seem to think that being offended condones the right to kill, fire, expel, and so on, other individuals. I often see comments that imply how freedom of expression/speech does not denote freedom from consequences and while that is true, I don't think that they realize how much of a slippery slope that type of mindset can be. Occurrences such as these are an example of that slipeery slope. Many want freedom as long as it concurs with their own line of thinking but when that freedom ventures outside of what they deem as acceptable, they try and regulate it for others. Your right to be offended should never superceded established laws of murder or right to trials, etc.
