[Exclusive Interview] Brown Eyed Girls’ First Sub-unit M&N Wants to Bring Female-Power Hip Hop!

November 20 at 1pm… enters…

Brown Eyed Girls’ (BEG) very first and all new sub-unit M&N!

M&N consists two of BEG members Miryo and Narsha, who released a digital single â€œTonight†and its music video on November 11. The name comes from the initials of Miryo and Narsha.

“Tonight†was composed by JeA and the Candy Sound team, who also made “Kill Bill,†the title song of Brown Eyed Girls’ fifth album. The lyrics were written by Miryo and Narsha themselves!

Miryo and Narsha came into our office greeting us with bright smiles. As we all sat down, the two made jokes with our reporter Kang Soo Jin, who they were acquainted, about how in a way, they are a rookie group!

From start to finish, the girls chatted with us freely and friendly, bursting into laughter a lot of the times.

According to the girls’ agency Nega Network, there are no TV appearances planned for M&N.

Q: Welcome back…wait, its not a comeback, it’s actually a debut right?

(M&N): Yes, we’re debuting as M&N!

(Everyone laughs)

Q: How old are you guys..?

(M): I was born in 1981, and my birthday which was November 1, passed, so I’m 32.

(N): I was born in 1981 as well, but my birthday is December 28, so.. I’d like to go with 31.

Q: Who’s the leader?

(N): Miryo is the leader. I recommended her.
(M): So, by Narsha’s recommendation… I became the leader of this duo group.

(N): I recommended her because she has a deeper understanding about hip hop, which is the type of music this group pursues. It’s a hip hop based unit!

Q: How do you feel about forming a new unit?

(N): I personally wanted to do something as a unit. I think the two of us will be able to so much more in the future. I can’t wait for us to do more music together, I wonder what kind of music we will be able to come out with. This time it was more casual but I believe there are more things in-stored for us in the future about this unit. A lot of other people liked this unit.

Q: How did this unit start?

(N): Our opinion was the biggest, and the company liked it too. Plus the timing just seemed right this year. But the first time this unit was ever mentioned was 2 years ago. I wanted to do something with Miryo with hip hop. You know, come out as a hip hop duo!

(M): Rsha always liked hip hop. She always had a hip hop groove in her blood.

(N): Normally, in the car, or anywhere, Miryo and I fit into a groove so well. We both liked the same type of music, so we both wanted this duo to happen.

Q: When did you start preparing for this album? Who first suggested it?

(M): I suggested it first to Narsha, if she was willing to do music with me.

(N): And of course I said yes, I wanted this to happen!

Q: How did the name come through? Any other candidate?

(N): Rather than creating a new name, we wanted to keep our name. Other than that, there was Unni-Dool? (literal translation: two older sisters)

(M): She (Narsha) came up with that so that if JeA were ever to join us, it would be Unni-deul (literal translation: older sisters)

(N): But the company said it was too funny, so it was rejected. In the end, we went for the initials. We wanted to have a free-style  feel to it. I mean, it sounds like a parody of M&M, which is what we wanted… We are actually eating that chocolate in the album cover.

Q: How did other members react?

(M): JeA encouraged it, because it was her song. (laugh) At the very beginning we did talk about having JeA, Narsha, and I as a unit, but JeA said she wanted to be the producer, so it became the two of us.

Q: Did the song come first or the unit?

(M): The song came after the unit was made. We wanted an easy listening song. Actually, Narsha and JeA wanted to do a strong hip hop song. But I thought it may be better to start off with a soft song. This is also why we aren’t performing this on stage.

Q: Others reaction?

(M): Fans always wanted it and were so surprised. They said ‘At last.’

(N): Think about it, we’ve been BEG for 8 years, and normally, there would’ve been several units by then. So when we announced that M&N would come out, our fans were very much surprised. They thanked us for finally making a unit. Also the concept for this album was very casual. It’s an album focused on our voices. Hoping that our fans would anticipate our next move.

Q: How much did you participate in making the album?

(M): We put our hands in producing, styling, visual, concept…

(N): We listened to this song and decided on the tone, makeup, concept, and style.

Q: Tone? It’s white right?

(N): We never did white concept before. (smile) Our company was surprised to see us in all white.

(M): White outfit, tone, and large gold jewelry. So, if you look closely, it’s not all soft. The lyrics are kind of sexy and strong.

(N): It’s subtle sexiness.

Q: Let’s talk about music. What genre is it?

(M): Well, according to our composer, it’s ‘contemporary-urban-sweet-unique-adult-hip hop.’

(Narsha burst out laughing)

(N): Does that really exist? (to Miryo)

(M): (waving her had to Narsha) Genre is made. Anyways, this song is for easy-listening, but in the future, we will do strong hip hop music.

Q: In hip hop, parts are divided, there are rappers in the most duos. Who raps in this unit?

(N): I actually tried but Miryo said no. (laugh)

(M): I admit that Narsha has passion for rapping… but that’s all, at least for now?

(N): If our leader allows me I want to rap!

(M): Alright, if her rap is received well, I’ll give my consent in our next album! (smile)

(N): You know, I’ve actually rapped before at Kim Jung Eun’s Chocolate in 2009. I enjoyed that stage so much!

Q: Lyrics were written by you guys? Tell us about the song.

(M): The song is about about wanting to spend this night with you. Our song is about woman telling the guy what she wants. It’s easy listening but has a shade of our real character in it. And now… why don’t we talk about guys?

(All laugh)

(M): On this album we talk about a different type of men. Before it was about macho-men, but this time, we talk about men like soft ice cream.

(N): In another words, Miryo is lonely!

(M): I want a vanilla soft ice cream man.

(N): For me, a guy who doesn’t look at anybody else but only me. I don’t need looks… Man, I’ve aged too much!

Q: Process of making this song must’ve been fun?

(N): Yeah we enjoyed it so much! Vocally, BEG always did charismatic and strong songs. So, when I first heard “Tonight,†it felt too soft. I was unsure whether I would be able to sing it. On the other hand, it was nice to have the vocal part all by myself!

(M&N laugh)

Q: Any difficulties?

(M): When we recorded the English version, we thought of giving up.

Q: Why did you record an English version?

(N): To aim international fans of course~!

Q: Who translated it into English?

(M): Lunafly’s Sam translated it for us.

(N): He is from Britain.

(M): There are many who like the English version. Overseas fans like Narsha’s English…

Q: How does it feel to be a duo from four-member group?

(M): Its nice to have all of our parts to ourselves.

(N): Nothing bad about it – I’m having so much fun. I love it.

(M): Me too. I’m happy that we’re doing this together.

(N): Right now, we’re not doing any activities, so maybe that’s why we don’t have any difficulties…yet.

Q: Future plans as M&N? How far you want to go?

(N): Right now I actually don’t know much, so I have nothing to fear right now, like a little puppy. Plus, I have Miryo beside me who has more knowledge about hip hop, so I’m not worried.

(N): We do have this strong image people have in us. In the future, when we perform on stage, we will come with a more powerful hip hop music.

Q: What do you think of female hip hoppers future?

(M): I’m don’t think I can’t say anything about that, but I do believe there’s M&N’s future.

(N): I think it’s time for a female hip hop duo to come out in Korea. We really want to do this right.

(M): Perhaps M&N could be a start of something…? (smile shyly)  I mean, I’m not saying that M&N has to and will start something or make something happen, you know, make a way for female hip hoppers. This unit started because we wanted to try this genre because this is what we like.

(N): I think that’s the most important part, doing music because you love it and enjoy it.

(M): I guess doing hip hop as a female singer wasn’t so easy before, because there were not a lot of listeners…

(N): But it’s different now. Hip hop has become a well-liked music. People are familiar with it. I think there will be more enjoyable hip hop songs in the future.

Q: When will the next album come out?

(N): Team album will be out first, early next year.

Q: What do you want to do as M&N?

(N): I want us to hold a small gathering-like concert in Hongdae, with very free atmosphere. I want to know how it feels like.
