Mr. Mr. is doing really well right now, considering the competition is one of the fiercest they've faced in their career. I expected Some to cockblock them, to be honest.

I hope they'll be able to secure the top spot for at least one week.

I see. But they say you can not win on comeback stages or sth like that. Is that true?

That's because music shows calculate the points that determine the winner by using data from the week before. So if a group releases their song the same week as they have their first stage, they can't win. They'll have to wait the following week because that's when music shows will use that song's first week sales.

I don't know if my explanations are clear lol, sorry. SNSD won't have that problem though, since their song is released this week and they're having their comeback stage next week.

Girls' Generation - 'Mr.Mr.' (Single Review)

After virtually reinventing the wheel on last year’s Frankensteinian pop patchwork “I Got a Boy,â€Girls’ Generation’s dialled down the crazy for their comeback single, “Mr.Mr.â€

That’s not to say that “Mr.Mr.†is some by-the-numbers confection plopped out to please the lowest common denominator, Ã  la everything on Katy Perry’s Prism. American hitmakers The Underdogs –who first made their mark as radio-friendly R&B producers before moving into more interesting territory with gems like Jordin Sparks’ “No Air†and Britney Spears’ “Mannequinâ€â€“ pulled from a plethora of places in the urban-pop pool to put “Mr.Mr.†together.

There’s the funky bubblegum bounce that underscores the entire song, the abundance of lush synths, the glittery disco strings that glide in on the chorus, and the menacing electro squiggles heaped on top to stop the whole thing from ever becoming too blindingly effervescent. It’s both the Girls’ Generation you know, and the Girls’ Generation you’ve never heard before.

Right before the bridge, ‘Mr.Mr.†drops in the kind of stuttering breakdown that’s sole purpose is to facilitate a blistering choreography stomp-off in the accompanying music video and live performances. These really rose to prominence in the ’80s thanks to the likes of Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul, two women which “Mr.Mr.†clearly tips its hat too, but it also feels like a nod back to early-2000s MTV-era Britney Spears, too. (A robotic female voice gets the honour of ushering in this conspicuous portion of the song, but every time I play it a part of me is hoping that Janet will swoop in with her defining “Edit!†command instead.) It’s the type of thing that went out of fashion once Max Martin-mania fizzled out and America decided that it was cheesy to have their pop stars deliver synchronized dance routines, but in K-pop land, where choreography and dazzling visuals are just as important as the music itself, it’s still very much a welcome interruption.

Because of their glossy exterior, Girls’ Generation never really gets the credit for actually being able to sing, so it’s always a thrill to hear them shut down the naysayers with excessive diva wailing and ad-libs whenever given the chance. They deliver it in spades here, with the triple-threat of Tiffany, Jessica, and Taeyeon going for gold on the bridge and beyond with vocal parading that might border on showboating if it weren’t for “Mr.Mr.’s†escalating intensity. Just like the “Genie†finale, it all makes for one hell of a climax.

Lyrically is where Girls’ Generation slips back into old patterns, offering up typical K-pop “oppa oppa†ego stroking as they cheer their man on from the sidelines amid booming stadium chants and hand claps. But this time around, they’re not shy shrinking violets content to play wifey and nothing else — they’re strong women sharing their strength because they’ve got enough to spare.

They say that behind every great man is a great woman, but in this case, there’s a whole generation of them.

Score: 9/10

If Mr Mr continues on Melon like in past 2 h . roof hit is possible in next 2h

I'm not expecting any more roof hits. The song seems to be slowing down on MelOn now that the initial hype is starting to fade away.

It would be the right time to release the music video to boost the song again.

Hi! I would just like to ask something since i'm not familiar on how it goes in korean music market but which is more important the rank they got on digital ranking or the number of physical album sold? Thanks.

The digital ranking is important because it's the best indication of how popular the song is in Korea among the general public.

Physical albums are important but are conducted mostly by fans, so an unpopular album by a popular group can still sell like hotcakes.

It's a given that SNSD will slay with their physical sales. Now we're all carefully watching how the song does on digital charts lol because that's unpredictable.

Comparing IGAB to Mr Mr on melon

IGAB since release (meaning more than a year) and Mr Mr since release (3 days)

1. Rating

 - Mr Mr 3.8

 -IGAB 3.1

44,108people rated IGAB

21,857people rated Mr Mr so far

2. Smth with heart so i suppose how many ppl clicked like?

 - Mr Mr 16 044

 - IGAB 40 914

Some has around 60 000 likes and only around 7 000 ppl rated the song

let me remind u IGAB was released more than a year ago and had MV, no leak etc etc

Mr mr was released 3 days ago, leak, bad promo, no MV etc etc

So far Mr Mr has better rating on Melon than  IGAB

when u looked at it Mr Mr is actually doing quite good

Honestly, it seems like people are just unaware of their new song being available. It was released on such short notice without any proper time to build anticipation again after the announcement of the delay.

I'm pretty sure the word will be out once the MV is released, so I'm not even worrying about seeing Mr. Mr. dropping on charts right now.

lol at some people questioning snsd's "wall you cant climb over" status

Performing what they're doing now with a last minute release, album leak, lack of music video, a previously data corrupted music video, late comeback stages and practically no promotion by SM for their comeback except their image teaser and a couple of articles talking about the composers of the title track is amazing. How many other artists can go through the same situation and still perform the way SNSD is?

With that being said, SNSD ranks on charts (both korean and internationally) is exact proof of their wall you cant climb over title.

I'm done.

I really don't get why you (and many others) think the MV has been ready and they're just messing around for fun.

Isn't it completely obvious that the reason for the 2 comeback delays has been that the MV wasn't finished?  :._.:

They really need to get it done and released during this week tho.

That's because when SM announced that the album would be pushed forward to the 24th, a part about the MV was mistranslated into "the MV is finished and will be released anytime".

The following day, another article about the MV still being worked on came out, though.

It sounds beautiful. You can truly appreciate the production here. I love the guitar near the end of the song.

SM NEVER announced that the album would be pushed to the 24th. That is just made up.

It was initially said digital + MV on 19th and CD on 24th.

Then SM said comeback was postponed because of MV problems with no new date set.

On the 24th the album was accidentally leaked on iTunes and as an emergency response SM released it digitally right away with just 4 hours notice.

Yes, that's what I was referring to when I said

"That's because when SM announced that the album would be pushed forward to the 24th, a part about the MV was mistranslated into "the MV is finished and will be released anytime"."

There were a few articles on Korean websites announcing the album would drop on the 24th at 5PM KST, and some parts were mistranslated or made up, I don't know.

Now I'm just praying SM is doing extra hours to wrap up the MV as soon as possible.

The competition is getting way too serious for SM to wait for the MV release now. I really hope they wrap it up quickly and release it tomorrow or after tomorrow.

I feel like Mr. Mr. could have been an instant hit if the promotion had been done properly from the start. Now I just hope SNSD's power will be enough to make it go up on charts again.  :)

Meh the hate/wank is so exhausting sometimes :(

I'm just comparing it to the IGAB hate and I feel a little bit better. That was on a completely different level.

Even if digital charts are a real battlefield right now, you know the girls are going to have the best YouTube views and album sales. Just wait.  :hurr: And more hate coming our way.  :hurr:

I think IGAB was more of people not understanding it. It was really fragmented and like 3 different songs, even though I like it. Though maybe that was bc of the MV. Anyways, Mr.Mr. is just kindof a song. There's nothing to really "get". the song is there, it's not like Gee, where it was inexplicably successful and annoyingly cute-ish, or IGAB where it was something that took understanding, but people are calling it a flop. I think that's a bit of a different scenario.

Because people simply always find something to hate on. Whether it's the lyrics, the construction of the song or the concept.

Every time SNSD has released a track post-Gee, people have always called it SNSD's worst single to date. We're all starting to get used to it tbh.

SNSD make millions a year, an investment in a top producer in the pop field Max Martin/Dr Luke/STARGATE/Bloodshy is more than feasible for two songs; a promoted buzz single a la Dancing Queen and the comeback track. This would also help create a definitive sound that the reminder of the mini/album could pursue to ensure coherency.

Do you think these people can actually compose for anyone if the paycheck is big enough ? Looking at their past work as producers, it feels like they only work for people they really want to collaborate with, especially Max Martin and Dr Luke (I know STARGATE worked with Japanese artist JASMINE once or twice). I'm not sure they'd be interested in working with a K-Pop group, but who knows.

I'm also part of the minority who doesn't necessarily want SNSD to collaborate with American producers. A famous producer doesn't really guarantee better or catchier songs than what they're releasing right now. But it would be interesting, I guess.
