[sunny turns down an oppa fan's iPad mini gift]

After getting the consent of the fan involved, I've decided to share this story with everyone. Even though the person involved feels very regretful after preparing his heart for so long only to be rejected, I wish to let everyone know, the Sunny we all like is a down to earth, good kid. That day at the LA airport, he was very shy and nervous when he saw Sunny. He helped his sister call her name and hold out the iPad mini. But as soon as Sunny saw the iPad, she used Korean and said: I can't accept this, anything else is fine though~!

So like that, Sunny declined the Sone's good intentions, it was really quite saddening. But thinking of her straightforward rejection of such a valuable gift, I actually felt delighted. Liking this kind of girl is a blissful thing, am I right?  In the future, if we have the opportunity for close interactions with Sunny or other members, perhaps we can prepare a simple card with everyone's wishes and support. Certainly this will far surpass material gifts in giving them strength. Once you see the kids tightly holding the card that you held out for them, you will be touched!

cr: me

lol, this person keeps referring to the sone as a handsome oppa and the SNSD members as kids. Oppa in Chinese has a different connotation, so it doesn't necessarily mean the person talking is a younger girl. Actually, this person sounds like an uncle fan.

It's appropriate for Sunny to not accept the gift. Afterall, this is a sensitive subject  but Sunny seems to be such a sweetheart  :lub:

I never know that you could read and write in Chinese, aren't you Chinese American though?

Yup, born and raised in the US. I can read simple stuff like this (I do have to read slower than normal). Can't quite read at the level of a newspaper though. I'm surprised people have this impression of Chinese Americans because I know quite a few ABCs who are around my level or better than me. I think East coast kids are more likely to be whitewashed though so maybe it's just the area I grew up.

I live in the West Coast right now and all the Chinese Americans that I know aren't good. They could understand but they couldn't read nor speak fluently. Same with Vietnamese but Koreans seem to be more aware of their language That's why I'm surprised.

Huh, that's surprising to me. Yeah, Koreans have this, for lack of better fitting word, pride about their culture/language. Well, Korean is easier than Chinese to read and write because there's a phonetic alphabet. But in my experience, Korean Americans are also less shy about speaking in Korean to each other. For the most part, they typically have a better grasp of their language than other Asians. It's interesting, I wonder why that is that they're more "proud".

Korean nationalism has a strong ethnic base. It is built on the belief of Korean blood purity, which sets them apart from the others and therefore making their culture a distinct one. Ethnicity is developed through a common language and shared history. Due to their turbulent past, this ethnic identity has been a source of pride and inspiration during troubled times. It has also regularly been invoked to encourage unity and solidarity among the Korean people.

I feel like a lot of that can be said for other Asian countries as well though. Any examples of when or how their ethnic identity was invoked to encourage unity/solidarity?

friend : wow she’s going to be a young mother.

me : WTF dude??? since when?

friend : she pregnant isn’t she??

Ethnic identity is common in other Asian societies but in present day, the emphasis of blood purity in ethnicity is quite unique to South Korea.

Korean ethnic nationalism began during the colonisation of the island by Imperial Japan. The Imperial Japanese ideology was informed by Social Darwinism where they believe the Japanese race to be superior due to their pure blood (lack of intermarriages and ethnic homogeneity). Imperial Japanese believed that Koreans shared the same racial stock (but Koreans were subordinate to the Japanese) and attempted to assimilate them into the Empire through the imposition of Japanese culture e.g. the usage of Japanese language, change of Korean names to Japanese ones, adherence to Shinto religion. In their resistance to the Japanese efforts to eradicate the Korean identity, Korean intellectuals of the time started asserting their own unique heritage in the similar veins of blood purity and descent from the gods. This Koreanness then became a source of solidarity for the Korean people during the Japanese rule of the island.

Post-WW2 Korea then entered civil war. The economy of the South at the time was faring worse than the North as the North ended up with more natural resources and industry. South Korean president Park Chung Hee harnessed this pride in Korean identity that stemmed from Japanese rule and persisted after the war into official policies to guide the country through the modernization process. Park faced many issues at the time that threatened his authority gained from a military coup: North Korea, economic backwardness, social instability. He invoked old Confucian values which claimed that every member of the society has a responsibility in achieving state objectives and that South Korea were an organic entity, like a family. Through the adoption of these official nationalist policies, hangul was made the symbol of national essence.

The Korean ethnic nationalism has its origins during colonial times which was institutionalised subsequently by its governments. Unlike Korea, Japan could no longer propagate racial conceptions of a nation due to the outcome of WW2.

In comparison, Chinese nationalism had a similar ethnic basis during the time of Sun Yat-sen. But the eventual control of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) saw Chinese nationalism morphing into more of a Marxist rhetoric. CCP at the time also viewed the Chinese diaspora as some sort of agents of capitalism. However, there has been a renewed focus on the Chinese identity as a result of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 but instead of race and ethnicity; they focus more on the “100 years of humiliation†of China by imperialist forces as China is officially a multi-ethnic society.

Hope Tiffany got loads of gum.

Wow, I wasn't expecting such a detailed and thorough response. Thanks for taking the time to write that!

So how does this relate to blood type obsession in South Korea? I thought it was the Japanese who came up with the idea that blood types determine your personality.

AReed was perfectly chill though...

Anyways, I don't have a problem with Taeny's actions in the fan acc. If I were them, I'd probably do something similar. Sometimes you feel more social, sometimes you just want to be left alone. Probably applies with fan interaction as well. They can't be on their A game for every single fan they meet. It's just bad luck if you happen to be the one to meet them on their off days. I get that it isn't fair as the fan with bad luck, but it also isn't fair to the girls if they aren't allowed any slack.

Moral of the story: If you want a signature from one of the girls in a non-managed, casual setting, then Jessica is probably your best bet.

Moral of the story: If you run into Taeyeon in public, pretend that you don't know her so that you don't scare her off.

You're welcome! It was no problem.

As mentioned in the previous post, the emphasis on blood in race among the South Koreans was influenced by the Japanese who were informed by Social Darwinism. During that time, Nazi Germans employed the same ideology of racial supremacy as the Japanese. When Austrian scientists discovered and identified the different blood group types, the Nazis used this to "scientifically" prove that the German blood of Aryan lineage were superior to other races.

The Japanese then similarly came up with their conception of blood group hierarchy e.g. by assuming one blood group is more submissive than another etc. to justify social engineering. A prominent example of this is one Japanese scholar in the 1920s claimed that the participants in a Taiwanese rebellion against Imperial Japan were mainly of the O types and O types were believed to be less submissive (today, O types are still classified as "leaders"/"warriors"). His solution was to intermarry Japanese people with the Taiwanese to dilute the "rebellious" type O blood.

These theories by the Nazi and Imperial Japanese scientists were eventually debunked in the 1930s but it was revived by a Japanese lawyer in the 1970s. His book had no scientific basis but it caught on and his version of the concept is what we see now as the modern (and less gruesome) incarnation of the idea.

The obsession with blood type only truly caught on in Japan and South Korea - two societies where the concept of blood is deeply embedded in their culture.

Interesting! I'm familiar with eugenics and its tie to Nazi Germany. I didn't know blood type was also something they tried to purify as well though.

Hey peeps, I have another rant/opinion I need to post. This one is more serious and may make you guys mad.

It concerns Taeyeon and Tiffany again. Here it goes.

Apparently lots of PH SONEs were waiting for Yuri at Davao Airport earlier.

coz there was a rumor saying No Breathing casts will arrive at 3pm at Davao airport,

turns out only the 2 male leads arrived because Yuri is in Japan right now with the rest of the girls.

and our Black Pearl is sweet enough to comment on her IG post

Lol that question mark makes it seem like she's unsure of where she is.

SM probably failed to mention to her which country she's going to   :hehe:

but she is putting her in #6 place when she is at least at #4

There's no way you to accurately quantify popularity though. So people can have different ideas and opinions.

Taeyeon, Jessica, and Yoona are ranked in “The 23rd Annual Independent Critics List of the 100 Most Beautiful Faces – 2012

http://www.soshified...iful-faces-2012

I'm not saying your ranking of Jessica is wrong. I'm saying there's no definitive wrong or right. And I'm not trying to argue with you about this, so no need to dig up evidence to support what you think.

^

^ I put One Hallyu forum for the "where do you get kpop news (excluding Twitter) ?" xD

Lol, me too. Maybe SM will come visit the thread now  :ninja:

For search engine, I was choosing between Bing and Yahoo. Ended up putting Bing because they pay everyone to use it in shows/movies. So at least I've seen people using it to search stuff up.

Same here. I guess we negate each other since I chose Yahoo. Bing is always on TV/movies, but I always see people talking about things from Yahoo news. But basically everything except Google is irrelevant so whatever haha

Lol. I thought about that. But no one actually searches things using Yahoo. It's slightly different to go on their homepage for news.

But yeah, when I read "excluding Google", my mind totally blanked for a bit.

Next time the girls go to Taiwan, they should visit this restaurant.

Yes, that's toilet paper hanging off the wall as a substitute for napkins. The seats are actual toilets and that table is a bathtub.

I would want to go there if I had chance  :stare:

And I can imagine that too :hurr:

Me too. They started a chain because it got so popular. So the good news is that you can take your pick to visit a more convenient location. Of course all are in Asia though.

Only logical conclusion:

...and I don't know why they make an issue between the two which they only saw a portion or tidbits of a fancam. few months ago if I remember correctly their is a fan acct that Taengsic dine in together but no one here say anything only people in twitter spazzed on it...so hope people will stop this issue because you never know whats happening behind the camera...

Link to the fan account?

I feel like I'm slowly being brainwashed by Taengsic propaganda. Resistance or retaliation is futile. I've given up on reasoning.

Have you watched KBS Sweet Night episode 4 before?

It's worth watching just to see Yoona spitting out water while laughing due to the cheesiness when one of the guest said that he became a fan of Yuri's after seeing her bare face (At around 1:05). The whole episode was pretty hilarious.

I always forget about this one because I found it later than everything else. But honestly, it's one of my favorite soshi variety show appearances. Yoona's part and Hyoyeon's part were really entertaining. It was pretty cool to see their old connections from before they became famous. I'd really like to see a guest for each of the girls though  :horror:

Poor Yuri getting ignored by Hyo
