Man to Man: Episode 4

mantoman04-00078.jpg

If we’ve learned anything about our secret agent thus far, it’s that he’ll do whatever it takes to complete a mission. Though his quick thinking and decisive actions have served him well in the past, things aren’t working out quite as cleanly for Seol-woo in his newest mission, leading to some unintended consequences that will probably make his job—and his life—a little more complicated than he’d like.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Seol-woo follows Woon-kwang and Chairman Victor to the chairman’s secret room. Through his earpiece, Seol-woo tells Dong-hyun that they’re going to “Plan B,†and though Dong-hyun clearly thinks Seol-woo is crazy, he goes with it. Chairman Victor unlocks his secret room with his handprint and then the secret password, which happens to be “Dark Death†and the character’s signature phrase (in Korean): “The worst there is.†Dong-hyun watches Seol-woo as he follows Woon-kwang and the chairman into the room, then puts their new plan into action, pushing a button that shares their location.

On the receiving end of this information is Major Petrov, the Russian military leader who Seol-woo helped break out of prison. In a flashback, we see that Seol-woo sought out Petrov before the party to secure his help for Plan B. Seol-woo said he’d get the evidence on Chairman Victor that the Russian military is looking for; in return, he asked Petrov to be ready to deliver a blast of EMP (electromagnetic pulse), just in case it’s needed. When Petrov receives the chairman’s location, he knows Plan B has been activated. He gives the order to send the EMP drone to the mansion.

Back in Chairman Victor’s secret room, the chairman shows off his collection of artifacts, which includes an original print of the first Dark Death comic book. Seol-woo carefully looks around the room, then zeroes in on a small sculpture (a wood carving, perhaps?) in the corner. Dong-hyun’s voice comes through Seol-woo’s earpiece with an update: Petrov has been notified, and there’s one minute left. Dong-hyun shuts down his equipment since the EMP will cause the power to fail and reminds Seol-woo that he’ll be on his own.

As Seol-woo checks his watch, a drone circles Chairman Victor’s mansion, sets its target, then sends the EMP blast. Immediately, all the lights in the building turn off. A guard quickly relays to the chairman that the security system is down, but it should be back up soon. Though the chairman orders an increase in security, he tells his team to keep the party going. The group leaves the chairman’s room, and Seol-woo takes one last look at the sculpture.

Back at the party, the guests murmur in bewilderment over the sudden power outage. As if on cue, a chef wheels out Chairman Victor’s birthday cake into the darkened hall, and a performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow†begins, making it look like the outage was planned.

Seol-woo and Woon-kwang return to the party, prompting Do-ha to exhale in relief. She’s worried that something might be wrong, but Woon-kwang just shrugs it off, and Seol-woo assures her that things are fine.

As the guests watch the performance, Seol-woo slowly makes his way out of the hall and heads to the second floor, where the carving is supposedly located. On his way, he puts in a special contact lens which gives him superhuman vision to detect signs of danger, and he’s able to avoid the guards stationed around the building.

Latest interview by Cleo Singapore magazine.

If you haven’t watched MAN x MAN, it’s time to tap on your Netflix app and start watching. The show, which is currently airing in South Korea as well, is only four episodes in, but it’s already taken us on a rollercoaster ride of suspense, laughter and sadness.

The drama revolves around the story of a Hallyu star, Yeo Woon Gwang (played by Park Sung Woong), his bodyguard who is actually a secret agent (played by Park Hae Jin) and Woon Gwang’s manager (played by Kim Min Jung).

If you’re expecting your typical love triangle kind of plot, you might be disappointed because Hae Jin said, “I would say you’ll see more bromance [than romance].†He added, “Even with Kim Min Jung, our chemistry is more like a quarrelling-with-each-other kind of relationship, not a typical love-each-other relationship, and I believe that the audience will find it more fun and interesting.â€

The bromance Hae Jin talks about is, of course, between him and Sung Woong. The two share such impeccable chemistry on-screen that you might think it’s not their first time working together. And you’re not entirely wrong – both of them acted in East of Eden a decade ago. However, unlike their current characters, they hardly interacted in their previous roles.

Hae Jin said, “We did work together 10 years ago in East of Eden but there was not a single shot where we were in the same frame.†He added, “It felt very fresh that I got a chance to work with him after all those years, and we definitely became closer to each other while working on this series.â€

Sung Woong agreed, “I worked with Hae Jin in East of Eden 10 years ago. It’s been a long time since we reunited but we were able to create bromance chemistry right away. I was impressed by his masculine eyes while shooting the action scenes, and I found out he became much cooler and manlier while I haven’t seen him.â€

Sung Woong was not the only one singing praises about his co-star. Hae Jin returned the favour when he described the veteran actor as “a cool guyâ€. He said, “He’s just a cool [mature] man. I want to learn that side of him. You’re so cool, Sung Woong!â€

While the chemistry may have come naturally between the two actors, it seems a lot of hard work was involved too. Sung Woong, who has taken on more serious roles in his 20-year career, said he had many meetings with the director and screenwriter to fine-tune details, and even tried improvisations on set. He said, “There are a lot of improvised motions, gestures and tones of voice, as well as improvised lines. My favourite moment was whenever the director laughed so hard and couldn’t even say ‘Cut’, then I did it instead and said ‘Cut’ very boldly.â€

[Drama Review] 'Man to Man' -- Episode 4

MAN TO MAN -- EPISODE 4

gv1ehye.jpg&key=656770b7ddf09e3ab4b3ec5b

Seol Woo steals the wood carving from Chairman Victor, with the help of a drone and an EMP set off by Petrov, the man he rescued from prison in Budapest. He evades capture (just barely) by pretending to make out with Do Ha as the guards catch up to him. Mi Eun meets withMr. Ji, the CEO of Chewing Entertainment. She tells him he needs to stick with Woon Gwang, so if he leaves, Mr. Ji needs to do so also. Seol Woo and his partner make plans for him to disappear so he can go after the 2nd carving. Meanwhile, the Black Ops agent is given orders from Lawmaker Baek to do what he has to get the carving. At her home, Do Ha agonizes to her friend about Seol Woo and her feelings for him. But our agent can't really stop thinking about her either. Seol Woo preps his clean break -- he splits up with Do Ha, then is informed that he needs to maintain his cover. So Seol Woo corners her outside the restaurant and takes her in a deep kiss...

I like the comedic elements in this so far. It's not laugh out loud funny, but they're more subtle...a series of unfortunate events. Considering the writer was one of the lead writers of 'Descendants of the Sun,' they should be more prominent. I'd like to see more of a bromance between Seol Woo and Woon Gwang. That was supposed to be the main point of the series, but their relationship is far more serious than that. I'd like them to get closer so we can get some awesome witty banter going.

As comical as Woon Gwang was in the beginning, he turns into a fairly decent guy. This is highlighted more and more with each episode. I like how his strategy meetings are informal, and after the briefing, they sit down and eat and/or drink, pretty much at the same table they're sitting around in the first place. They do refer their tight-knit group as a family, and I like that his entourage isn't a bunch of yes-men (or women). They try to be, but I know that Do Ha and Seol Woo aren't likely to keep their opinions to themselves. Seol Woo gets drawn in reluctantly, but that's part of the fun.

This gets more and more Bond every episode. Fully one-third of this installment was devoted to stealing the carving. I really enjoy the thriller aspects of this drama. They did a great job of keeping the tension high, and the alternation between stealth and short bursts of action is fantastic. Watching Seol Woo in action is great. They did a great job of turning him into an action star, and the direction and cinematography are the cherry on top of the whipped cream.

Do Ha is becoming more and more the love interest of Seol Woo. It does fall a little bit into the standard romance subplot: if a woman interacts with a man more than three times, she falls in love with him. The great thing is that though Seol Woo is trying hard to be unavailable, he ends up having feelings for her too. I like how you can't quite tell what he's doing with her from one moment to the next, and I like how he tells her "you were the only thing I could see." It works on several levels: 1) it sounds like a confession, which may well be his true feelings; 2) it keeps her interested in him, which helps his cover; and 3) it is technically true, though a better explanation would have been "the first thing I saw was you."That line is a great example of the top flight writing here.

Mi Eun is a bit of a cipher. It's obvious she wants to keep tabs on Woon Gwang, but I'm not entirely sure why. The marriage thing seems awfully forced, and I would love to know exactly what her deal is with Deputy NIS Director Jang. I'm guessing it's to get at the carvings which could tip the election if the information got out. But I don't know what she gets out of all this. I'm assuming that we'll get the full scoop as we go on.

The more I watch, the more I'm entertained. I've been fully sucked in, and now I really want to tag along as he obtains the carvings and navigates the minefield his cover has become. And his relationship with Do Ha is becoming a lot of fun. While it was a tad awkward in the beginning, I'm committed to the long haul.
