Hee, now I’m looking forward to Man to Man most of all in the new drama lineup. The latest teaser for JTBC’s new spy bromance drama starring Park Hae-jin (Cheese in the Trap) and Park Sung-woong (Remember–Son’s War) is the best one yet. It features a classic rom-com slow-motion run with Park Hae-jin leading Park Sung-woong away by the wrist like a swoony hero, and I swear that Park Sung-woong looks a little smitten in the moment.

The action comedy stars Park Hae-jin as a ghost agent who specializes in undercover work where he takes on a new persona for each mission and disappears without a trace. The story begins as he takes on a peculiar mission where he has to go undercover as a bodyguard to an actor. Park Sung-woong plays the top Hallyu star who made a name for himself playing badass villains, and Kim Min-jung (Gap-dong) is his biggest fan who turned her love for oppa into a legitimate career when she became his manager.

The new teaser opens inside Park Sung-woong’s celebrity van, where he complains to his driver about being late to his shoot because of all the traffic. New bodyguard Park Hae-jin says there’s another way and suddenly gets out of the car in the middle of the highway. Park Sung-woong: â€œIs he quitting three and a half hours after he started the job?†But the van door opens and Park Hae-jin wrist-grabs him out to street and says, â€œJust trust me. I won’t make you late,†and starts running with Park Sung-woong in tow.

From the staff car behind them, Kim Min-jung just sees the new bodyguard kidnapping her oppa and gives chase, screaming, â€œOppa! Where are you going?! Opppppaaaaaaaa~!†But then it gets really hilarious as the men run in slow-motion and Park Hae-jin looks back at Park Sung-woong with a little smile, like they’re suddenly in a rom-com. My favorite touch: Park Sung-woong’s flower pajamas and flip-flops. Park Hae-jin gets them onto the subway just in time, still wrist-in-hand, and adds a jaunty little wave to taunt Kim Min-jung who’s been left behind.

The second segment of the teaser introduces our three main characters. Park Hae-jin says he’s a ghost agent and calls himself “a nameless shadow.†Park Sung-woong is the “bad guy Hallyu star,†and Kim Min-jung is the “zenith of fandom†manager who praises the new bodyguard on his chemistry with oppa, heh. But by the end things take a darker turn with a real kidnapping, and she says, â€œThere’s something strange about that bodyguard. I have a bad feeling.†Park Hae-jin says to someone, “No matter who you are, you’re going to die by my hand.â€

I have a better feel for the show’s tone and its sense of humor from the recent teasers, and it’s getting pretty hard not to get my expectations up for all the secret identity hijinks and bromantic chemistry to come!

JTBC’s "Man to Man†will air on April 21 at 11 p.m. KST.

netflix-man-to-man.jpg

On April 7, Netflix officially obtained the exclusive international televising rights for JTBC’s upcoming drama “Man to Man.†This means that the drama, which will air its first episode on April 21, will be broadcast not only domestically, but also to the 190 foreign countries that Netflix services.

Episodes of “Man to Man†will be available on Netflix in Korea within an hour of the domestic broadcast while the series will be released in two 8-episode installments on Netflix in America. “Man to Man†is the first Korean drama to ever be broadcast through Netflix and will not only be available in the countries that Netflix services but will also have subtitles in over 20 different languages.

“Man to Man,†which stars actors Park Hae JinPark Sung Woong, and Kim Min Jung, is a drama about the “ghost†bodyguards of famous celebrities and the hidden figures that surround these agents. Despite the serious tone of the show’s log line, fans can anticipate a good amount of comedy due to the unexpected bromance between Park Hae Jin and Park Sung Woong’s characters.

JTBC’s “Man to Man†will begin airing on April 21 at 11 p.m. KST

DRAMA CASTING & NEWS

JTBC’s Man to Man gets snapped up by Netflix

UZF6Q1O.jpg

Looks like Netflix has got its heart set on breaking into the Korean drama scene: Only a few months after announcing two new Korean shows (Exhibits A and B) in its original series lineup, Netflix has announced that they have purchased exclusive international broadcasting rights to JTBC’s upcoming Man to Man. Now, I know this might seem like not-so-great news — I got Night Light flashbacks too, when the Netflix exclusivity meant that hardly anybody got to watch the show — but it sounds like Netflix will have a different approach this time around.

For the first time ever, Netflix will air episodes of Man to Man at the same time the show is aired in Korea (with the exception of viewers in the U.S., but I’ll get to that later). The episodes will also have subtitles in over twenty different languages immediately available upon release, which is definitely one advantage to choosing a pre-produced drama like Man to Man. I know English subbers are pretty damn fast nowadays, but it’ll be nice to see subs for lesser widely available languages become more easily accessible, and in real time at that.

Now, us Beanies stateside will have to wait a little longer for Man to Man to appear on the online streaming site. Netflix intends to release the show in two parts, with eight episodes each. The delayed offering is slightly annoying, but I’m just glad that Netflix is investing in Korean content, especially because I think their original shows are fantastic (Stranger Things, anyone?) and I’m excited to see them take on the Korean drama format.

Man to Man will premiere on JTBC and Netflix on April 21. Let the epic bromance begin!

Woman + Man × Man + Woman + Man + Man for Man to Man

ManToMan_6poster.jpg

JTBC has released a few new posters and one new character description for its upcoming drama Man to Man, and I love them to bits. Man to Man has a kind of quirky hard-to-define genre mashup that looks like a nice mix between James Bond and Mission: Impossible with a little Get Smart thrown in, and it’ll be exciting to see if it all comes together.

The drama will be about an unusual bromance between Park Hae-jin (Cheese in the Trap) and Park Sung-woong (Remember—Son’s War). The way they styled him in the posters makes Park Hae-jin’s character, Kim Seol-woo, look every bit the elite ghost agent that he is. Seol-woo has a 100-percent success rate with each mission and never compromises his identity. On the other hand, Park Sung-woong’s character Yeo Woon-kwang is a badass Hallyu star on TV, but the difference between how he’s styled in the first poster and the second makes it seem like perhaps he’s hiding a not-so-badass personality in real life.

The third poster hints at the potential romance between Park Hae-jin and Kim Min-jung (Master of Trade—Inn 2015), who plays Cha Do-ha, Park Sung-woong’s No. 1 dyed-in-the-wool fan since high school. She has climbed the mountain of fandom and is now a manager for her oppa. Her fangirl spidey sense is on point, because she is the first to notice something is amiss with his new bodyguard. However, I’m sure she didn’t expect to get swept off her feet by him.

The group poster presents the main cast of Man to Man in all its glory. On the far left is Chae Jung-ahn (Entertainer) who plays the elegant Song Mi-eun. Song Mi-eun climbed up the social ladder when she went from promising actress to the wife of third generation chaebol Mo Seung-jae, played by Yeon Jung-hoon (Mask). She’s a glamorous woman who has a secret wound from a past relationship, while her husband is an ambitious chaebol who will be the source of evil in our drama.

And finally, on the far right and rounding out the main cast we have a new character! Jung Man-shik (Neighborhood HeroAsura) plays Lee Dong-hyun, a former National Intelligence Service agent who is Park Hae-jin’s strongest ally. He is described as a very elusive character with a big presence who will add additional layers of fun and tension to the drama. All the characters are said to have interweaving storylines with each other, which will hopefully lead to some hilariously unpredictable moments.

JTBC’s Man to Man is written by Kim Won-seok (second writer on Descended From the Sun) and directed by Lee Chang-min (Remember–Son’s War). It will air at 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays beginning April 21.

Park Hae-jin stoically endures indignities for Man to Man trailer

men1.jpg

With a week till premiere, Man to Man has released a long trailer that gives us a better look at what we’re in for. The upcoming action-spy drama stars Park Hae-jin (Cheese in the Trap) as “a ghost operative, a shadow without a name.†For an undercover mission, he becomes the personal bodyguard of a famous stuntman-turned-actor, played by Park Sung-woong (Remember—Son’s War), but ends up in a strange love triangle with Park Sung-woong’s No. 1-fan-cum-manager, Kim Min-jung (Master of Trade—Inn 2015).

The trailer begins with Park Hae-jin as Kim Seol-woo, aiming sniper rifles, flying across rooftops, and introducing himself as a covert agent. But the next thing we know, Kim Min-jung is congratulating him for passing an interview, while he just stares blankly. In a swanky hotel suite, Seol-woo gets briefed on his next mission, which is how he ends up in the Hallyu star’s orbit.

That star is Yeo Woon-kwang (Park Sung-woong), who brags in an interview about his reasons for success: “First, because I did well, and also because of my first-rate staff.†A staff that includes Kim Min-jung, who sighs, “How can a person be so perfect?â€

But of course he’s human, and we see the star making out with a woman in a car and being jerked awake by bodyguard Seol-woo. Manager Do-ha (Kim Min-jung) thinks that Seol-woo is exactly the type that Woon-kwang hates, and based on the star’s reaction, he agrees. Perhaps they aren’t allowed to fire him, because Woon-kwang and Do-ha conspire to make the job as difficult as possible to force the bodyguard to quit. Woon-kwang demands that he stay close to him 24/7, gets him to wear an embarrassing teddy bear costume, and even ropes him into rehearsing lines with him (which ends with Seol-woo declaring, “I can’t betray you, Oppa!â€).

Seol-woo complains to his boss about what he’s going through, but he’s told to endure for the sake of the mission. So when Woon-kwang ignores manager Do-ha’s attempt to control his diet and runs off with a drumstick, it’s Seol-woo who catches up to him and snatches it away.

In the next few scenes, manager Do-ha explains all of the ways she finds the new bodyguard suspicious. But she wavers when he turns the full force of his charm on her, telling her that she’s pretty, buckling her seatbelt, and carrying her in his arm. He also tries to convince himself that it’s just another job and she’s just another target. But that seems far from the truth, and the trailer ends with his voiceover: “There’s something off about this mission.â€

JTBC Friday-Saturday drama Man to Man will premiere on April 21.

Part 1/3 By Chang Dong-woo .
SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- Traditional spy thrillers, whether TV or film, tend to be complex, heavy and dark in tone, themes and plot. Watching one, such as a Jason Bourne film, can be a straining experience to the mind, requiring more than 100 percent of the viewers' laser-focused attention to truly appreciate it. On the outside, "MAN x MAN" (pronounced "man to man"), a new Friday-Saturday TV series on JTBC, also has all the trappings of a traditional spy TV show: an elite agent who is a master of firearms and martial arts, corporate espionage and a former spy agent who goes rogue. But what's on the inside is a light-hearted love triangle comedy that's "bonkers," according to its showrunner Tuesday. "It's been mostly promoted as an espionage show, but we wrapped a comic show in a spy package. It's more close to a bonkers drama. You'll enjoy it if you keep that in mind," Lee Chang-min, director of "MAN x MAN," told reporters at a media event at the Times Square mall in western Seoul.

(Yonhap) The new television series is about a versatile, mysterious secret agent Kim Seol-woo, played by Park Hae-jin, who is tasked with protecting top celebrity Yeo Un-gwang, played by Park Sung-woong, as part of an undercover mission. Actress Kim Min-jung plays Yeo's fan-turned-manager Cha Do-ha, who also ends up in a love triangle between the two male lead characters. Yeon Jung-hoon plays Mo Seung-jae, a third-generation business tycoon and the show's main antagonist, and Chae Jung-an is cast as his wife, former Miss Korea Song Mi-eun.
.

Part 2/3
.
The 16-part series, which has already been produced in its entirety, is penned by Kim Won-suk, co-screenwriter for the hit TV show "Descendants of the Sun." "We did have a bit of pressure from the huge success of 'Descendants' but I began just by thinking of making a fun and delightful drama," said Kim, whose work is a follow-up to hit series "Strong Woman do Bong-soon," which ended last week. While the show is mainly a light drama-comedy, the central plot does involve some hard thriller/global espionage elements, sometimes taking the show overseas. Parts of the show were shot in Hungary, according to the cast. Lead star Park, who's previous works include "My Love from the Star" and "Cheese in the Trap," said his acting this time around was the most natural performance of his career. "I think it was my first time just playing natural in front of a camera," said Park. While not being written in words, Park saw his meticulous elite agent character lacking a certain "je ne sais quoi." "It wasn't part of the script but I felt it, or I tried to breath that sensibility into him," said Park.

Part 3/3 Park Sung-woong, who is most known for his hard and masculine roles, plays a star actor to whom the secret agent serves as a bodyguard. This time, Park dons a light-hearted comic facade and develops a bickering-yet-endearing "bromance" with his strange new bodyguard. Female lead Kim Min-jung also said she wanted to try out something new with the show. "If I just wanted to look pretty, I would have had my hair long and present the image that I was used to. But I felt as if my character shouldn't be like that." "I tried out a new hairstyle and focused on the fact that my character in this drama allows me to have the most fun in my acting career to-date," Kim said. "MAN x MAN" will also be aired on the global video streaming site Netflix in some 190 countries at the same time it airs in its home market. In Korea, it will be available on the site an hour after it runs in its regular time slot of 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. In the United States, the series will be made public on the site in two eight-episode segments. "MAN x MAN" premiers Friday on JTBC.

Park Hae Jin Spy Drama "Man To Man" To Be Aired By Netflix To 100 Million Subscribers With 20 Subtitles

man-to-man.jpg
JTBC's "Man to Man" has the very rare opportunity to penetrate a global market as it becomes the first Korean drama be broadcast simultaneously by the streaming giant Netflix which reaches 190 million countries and close to 100 million subscribers. (Photo : JTBCLove/Twitter )

JTBC's new spy drama "Man to Man" may be pressured by the positive performance of its predecessor "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" in terms of ratings. But it has the very rare opportunity to penetrate a global market as it becomes the first Korean drama be broadcast simultaneously by the streaming giant Netflix.

According to a report by Variety, Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to broadcast the Korean spy drama topbilled by "Cheese in the Trap" star Park Hae Jin and "East of Eden" actor Park Sung Woong who will play a secret agent and a popular actor. "Man to Man" will revolve around Hae Jin's character Kim Sul Woo as he goes undercover to work as a bodyguard to Sung Woong's character Yeo Woon Gwang who sees him as an unnecessary inconvenience.

Netflix will be streaming "Man to Man" at the same time as JTBC and will simulcast airing to 190 countries and its almost 100 million subscribers worldwide. The series will be available with 20 subtitles to make it accessible to all types of audience.

While "Man to Man" stands a good chance to become an international hit, its cast and crew are still not exempt from being nervous about how the show will be received in Korea. It can be recalled that Man to Man will be replacing JTBC ratings dynamo "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" for its Friday and Saturday night timeslot.

In a report by Soompi, "Man to Man" PD Lee Won Suk said that the show's team does feel some pressure from the precedent set by "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon." However, it's a challenge that also presents an opportunity for the Man to Man team.

"I would be lying if I said that we don't feel burdened by it; however, that drama was very helpful in establishing JTBC's presence in that time slot," he said. He said that "Man to Man" will pull out many unexpected and entertaining surprises when it starts to air so audience should not simply dismiss the show as a typical spy drama.
