Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

(Related to Man to Man Only)

tineybeanie : I’ve only watched Park Sung-woong in serious roles, so I was completely unprepared for this version of him, but he’s comedy gold. He plays his character so well—finely treading the line where we can see the juxtaposition between the diva man-child, and the deeper inner Yeo Woon-kwang that we catch glimpses of when he’s contemplating his first love. Speaking of which, Chae Jung-ahn is fierce, although I may have liked her empty-headed bubble-brain act in Yong-pal a smidge better; she’s a similar character here except more grown-up. I’m half-expecting the kid to be Woon-kwang’s because we’re in dramaland, and that’s what tends to happens when “good†secondary characters get stuck in bad situations: They marry the villain. And I love me some makjang, so I won’t mind if the story ends up going in that direction. As for the main couple, honestly, I’m meh at this point, but hopefully things will pick up soon.

javabeans: This show is fluffier than I was expecting, but I in no way find this to be a detriment; most spy-action dramas have a tendency to take themselves too seriously, and often turn unintentionally cheesy. Man to Man has its cheesy tendencies too, but the difference is that it’s entirely intentional, and the humor, while a little broader than I’d prefer, is definitely its best asset. That and Park Hae-jin’s deadpan acting, though I’d argue that that’s just another facet of the humor, where his character is entirely humorless but the actor is working that entirely for comedic effect. The plot is kinda B-list and the story pretexts somewhat flimsy, but the show has a feel-good, silly-funny vibe that I’m enjoying.

Man to Man: Episode 5

mantoman05-00262.jpg&key=ef7d2e18f856aa0

I feel like this is the episode I’ve been waiting for. There are still pieces in this show that haven’t really smoothed out entirely, but I feel like we are quickly moving in the right direction, if we’re not already there. Who knew that all I needed was more cute and funny moments to keep me satisfied? Just kidding, I’m a simple creature, so I did know that.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Seol-woo throws himself back into his “Guard Kim†identity with an unexpected kiss-attack. Do-ha is rightfully bewildered and pushes him away. He apologizes, then explains that he tried to end their relationship by being cruel, but he confesses that he can’t leave her. She stares long and hard at him, then strikes him across the face. She demands to know if he’s messing with her and he barks back annoyed that he wishes he were kidding while clutching his tender cheek. Hehe. He takes a deep breath to regain his composure then tells her that he’s usually not like this, but lately he keeps making mistakes. He eases back into character and clarifies that he means the mistake of trying to leave her for her own good. He declares that he’s canceling his resignation, then takes off before he can bury himself in his mountain of lies. Do-ha touches her lips as he leaves and grumbles about his behavior while being clearly unnerved.

Seol-woo sits Dong-hyun down for a chat, demanding an explanation for making him look crazy. He warns that if he finds Dong-hyun’s reasoning for having to maintain his cover insufficient, then he should prepare himself. As fate would have it, Agent Y’s informant “Goldfinger†is CHA MYUNG-SUK, Do-ha’s father. Dong-hyun explains that they are after a ring given to her by her father (the gift she lied about throwing away), and adds that seducing beautiful women is Seol-woo’s specialty. Seol-woo sighs and reiterates that he has a bad feeling about their mission, then theorizes that it might be because Do-ha isn’t a beauty. At home, Do-ha tries but can’t make heads or tails of Seol-woo’s recent actions. Song-yi offers simply that he’s a psycho, but that isn’t enough for Do-ha who wants to know why he acts the way he does only to her, but is polite and normal to everyone else.

Song-yi suggests Do-ha might have enjoyed the kiss, but Do-ha adamantly denies it. So Song-yi tells her to just fire Seol-woo and be done with him, since he already resigned anyway, but Do-ha argues that Woon-kwang really needs him around. Song-yi doesn’t believe her, so Do-ha gets shouty and swears that she personally hates Seol-woo. The next morning, Seol-woo calls Do-ha bright and early. He sweetly tells her to dress warmly today since it’ll be windy, and when questioned as to why he’s calling her first thing in the morning, he merely replies that he wanted to. A little later, Sang-shik tries and fails to wake Woon-kwang up yet again, but when Seol-woo arrives he announces that Woon-kwang has two minutes until he needs to wake. The sound of the bodyguard’s voice gets Woon-kwang out of bed, and the actor excitedly asks if Seol-woo has returned to work. Seol-woo answers that he couldn’t turn down Do-ha, and asks to retract the 24/7 guarding duties. Woon-kwang is super jazzed to have his brother back and practically skips over to the bathroom to get ready for the day. He’s adorable.

Do-ha joins the team on set later and when Seol-woo sees her, he does this cute little wave, but she just scurries away awkwardly. Woon-kwang beams as he greets her, asking how she managed to get Seol-woo to stay with them. She starts acting weird about the answer, accusing Seol-woo of doing something all on his own, but when questioned, Do-ha becomes evasive and replies that nothing happened. Woon-kwang lets it be, but he eyes her suspiciously. Thankfully, Woon-kwang is called away to his shoot, so Seol-woo, who was watching her fumble around the truth, comes closer. Do-ha puts her hand up to stop him from approaching and institutes a one-meter-distance rule between them at all times.

He asks why and she says, “Because your eyes are indecent and your hands are wicked.†Hehehehe. She uneasily points out that his lips and the most troublesome, then leaves. He glares at her as she walks away, feeling foiled, then puckers at the air, pouting. Omg, so cute. He follows her outside to ask her what will happen if he breaks her rule, and she answers, “You will die.†The pair is recruited to be extras in the scene Woon-kwang is filming, and though Do-ha jumps into the shot, clearly having done this a million times before, Seol-woo remains on the side. She growls at him to hurry and come stand beside her, but he answers cheekily that he doesn’t want to die. The director becomes impatient and shouts at Do-ha to set up the shot, and so she amends her rule and says the one meter thing doesn’t apply during work.

Here is a quick summary.

0000153686_001_20170508095727338.jpg?typ

The title of the article is 'Man to Man' Production reveals Kim Min Jung... "Forgoing the prettiness to go all in"

The article then goes on to say that Kim Min Jung is being praised for her portrayal of Cha Do Ha. The Cha Do Ha character is one which has a casual and extreme appearance and demeanor which makes her come across as fierce, but inside she's actually full of tears and has a lot of scars from when she was younger. She has never dated, but finds herself opening up to Kim Seol Woo and falling in love with him.

The article goes on to talk about how KMJ is a 28 year acting veteran counting from the years when she was a child actress. And, the easy thing to do would be to do lightweight bright and lovely role as a Hallyu star rather than take on an emotional and extreme role like CDH. The production said that the role had required an actress who could really act since the character is established as a feisty woman who then has to convincingly fall in love with KSW and then evolve to be a good partner for him as well as demonstrate the fervor with which she protects YUG.

For the role, KMJ cut 25 cm of hair off, plus added bangs and tacky hair pins to show CDH's nature. KMJ mentioned that she had wanted to role from the first, thinking that she would be able to show another side of her acting self. Since CDH had never dated, KMJ wanted to show the awkwardness that comes with inexperience with falling in love.

The writer commented how KMJ was dedicated to the role from the first reading, and getting into the role rather than trying to play CDH as lovely and sweet.

However, the production has also revealed that from now on CDH will start changing. I think they mean in response to the story line including falling in love and having her eyes opened to KSW and his world.
