Question For Those Who Have Learned A Second Language...

It's a fluent process so I can't really tell how long it took me to reach this level. Probably somewhere between 4 to 7 years for perfect understanding/grammar/etc. But I could write and speak after 3 years, just that it wouldn't be without mistakes. Oh, and reading was possible after 2 years for fairly normal texts (so nothing scientific or high difficulty). Think a good newspaper.

Well, I started learning English in school, but I think after I started reading Harry Potters when I was about 11 yo I made some sort of a break through lol. Actually I have no idea how long it took to learn English fluently... It's been so long I really can't remember.

it took some years to learn English, for sure, around 6-8 years, even though I'm far for being fluent.

but around the age of 4 to 6 years old I lived in spain and I was able to learn spanish in far less time, I'd say that the age helped as well, but living among people who speak the language you're trying to learn helps a lot.

I've been speaking english since forever

I remember being very young and having one of my uncle who lived

in an english speaking country teach me how to count in english

I wouldn't say that I'm high level tho, I still make a lot of grammatical mistakes

but what really helped me (and it's stupid) is watching youtube videos and movies and series without

subtitles and hanging on forums trying to speak english, and also having pen pals

plus when I was in high school I was in a section

where we had a few classes in full english

during that time I studied great literature and read a lot of book

in very complicated english. It was painful but it help me a lot

Well, I started learning english since I was a little child, and my grammar started to improve once I entered the forums and started chatting with users, I can´t say it´s perfect tho, i´m constantly learning new words and rules.

Right now i´m in constant pain because my keyboard don´t work properly and i´m forced to make mistakes.

I had to learn English because I knew that we were going to move to USA. Do I have an accent? Absolutely, but I know how to play around with my voice and with the phonetic sounds in order to diminish my accent. Truth be told I speak better than I write, all those tenses in English just drive me nuts cause in Polish we only have 3; past, present and future. I guess even native English speaking people have difficulty with English grammar.

Funny thing is that my English is actually better than my native tongue. I forgot a lot of Polish because I only use it with my parents on a daily basis. I forgot a lot of the grammar, I forgot a lot of the words etc.. Do not ask me to translate a letter word for word from English to Polish and vice versa cause that's not gonna happen.

i think it depends on

-your mother tongue's level of difficulty

-the language you are learning

-the method you are following

-how often and in which medium are you gonna practice that language

I could read, understand and speak turkish after roughly a year, and make it fluent, no one can tell i'm not native, in 3 years or so because i started living there

While it took a longer time to learn english because it was only once a week at school and i couldn't practice it as much at first

My mother tongue is much harder than both of them so it was an advantage

So if you are not just sticking to the 'official' way of taking courses but are adding up listening to music, watching programs and reading books in that particular language plus lots of practice you definitely can shorten the span of naturalising to the language in 3 years or so.

I started learning English when I was 7 and two years later I didn't need that ESOL teacher. You learn faster if you breathe and live that language lol

I was a quick learner as a child, but I guess every child learns fast

i hated learning english in school until 4th grade.....but then i had to wait for half a year for hp to be translated in my language so my mother bought every christmas the english books... at first i had some trouble reading them but after the first book i only liked the english versions, then it came natural and it became my favorite subject at school

SAME THING OMG. It took way too long for them to be translated so I bought the English versions. From sixth grade to seventh my English skills developed so fast that when I used to be average, I was suddenly at the top of the class. :dave:

I started learning English when I was a young age, maybe at 6/7 years old. My parents wanted me to master English, so they sent me to English classes for years.

Since the classes were mostly centered around grammar and reading comprehension, I thought that wasn't enough. So I started watching movies and listening to songs in English and mimicked their pronounciation. Over the years I forced myself to watch TV shows or YT videos without subtitles and read books in English. I'd say I became fluent around high school years. That was when I could regulate my thoughts in English and express them in English as well. No trace of any accent too.

I'm much more comfortable using English now than I am in my mother tongue lol

I had a lot of friends whose main language was English so even though I kinda slacked off during English classes in school, I guess I learned well by talking to them regularly since they didn't know Russian that well so I'd have to speak in English. So I recommend talking to someone in English (there's also texting, but that's different because in that case you have more time to think about your reply)

Also, watching movies/ TV shows helps
