The biggest chunk of this drama will be filmed during December, January and February , so expect a lousy weather ( with wind and snow) and more heavy costumes, probably with fur and hooded cloaks. :._.:

I don't mind really ^^ snow is always great in historical dramas (like nirvana in fire).

Also, TKL is a melodrama - so I guess they're going to go for a darker themed sageuk? If so, it'll fit the weather  :ahmagah:

So perhaps this must be at least a 20-episode drama?

There's no details, but you're most likely correct. Sageuks are at least 20 episodes. I'm guessing either 20 or 24 episodes.

I heard the 2nd lead is the actual love interest of the female lead and Im Si Wan's character is the villain who tries to separate them

I'm excited for this because MBC sageuks are always pretty, and it's a pre-production so it won't be like Hwajung which started really pretty and ended up being the same old sageuk relying on 1243423 head shots

What about Yeo Jin Goo or is he too young

He's a bit too young. I loveeee him though.  :lub: He's 2 years younger than me though

I want the second lead to be either of these 3 ideally

yoo seung ho

kim soo hyun (his visuals overlap too much with siwan so it might not be good casting wise)

joo ji hoon

out of these three, I really hope they cast Joo Hi Hoon... he has opposite visuals to siwan, he's more sexy

JJH!!  :lub: I APPROVE!

Following the topic :ahmagah:

They confirmed the casting? If so, then I'm so hyped, Siwan is really good, and I'm loving Yoona in K2, she totaly deserves the title of actress with her performance there. The description is a bit vague, but it'll do for now. I hope it'll be a really good one, especially since it's a public broadcast, and MBC's saguks are generally the best.

Uh, I think the names you're mentionning for 2nd lead (YSH/YJG/KSH) are bigger than Siwan public recognition wise for them to play his second. I'd like Choi Woo Shik to be the 2nd lead, he's an amazing actor and such a puppy face :ilove:

just a fun fact, did you know who's Siwan's role model? Lee Seung Gi

Welcome to the thread!!  :ahmagah:

Yes, they've both confirmed. We're just waiting (and guessing) who'll be the second male lead!

Choi Wooshik is an absolute cutie, I would love him to be second male lead!!

Seriously?  :hurr: Well, that makes things interesting

The hairstyle and type of clothing Yoona would be wearing is that of Woohee from Scarlet Heart, as it's set during the Goryeo dynasty!

More here: http://kkuljaem.blogspot.com/2016/10/if-you-could-wear-clothing-from-past.html

:ahmagah: I think it'll suit Yoona, so long as they don't give her 5:5 parting in the middle.

  • 2 weeks later...

I really hope they'll give them pretty outfit. I like Goryeo's style the most, and Moon Lovers' outfit are so beautiful.

Does anyone know if there's an Eng vers, or small résumé for this book? I'm curious about the story. My favorite saguks are book/webtoon adaptations, so this should be a good omen.

Unfortunately, I don't there is :( I've been searching for one for weeks now.

There's a new Facebook fanpage: https://www.facebook.com/thekinglovesdrama/

Some more info:

Credit: http://bodashiri.tumblr.com/post/151990363426/the-king-loves-2017

'The triangle love story between Crown Prince Wang Won (played by Yim Siwan), his loyal bodyguard Wang Rin, and a beautiful lady of royal blood Wang San (played by Yoona).

I didn’t read the original novel, but I heard it is a tragic love story between Warrior Rin and Lady San. Crown Prince Won is bisexual who loves both of them, and he drives them toward destruction out of jealousy when he found out his two close friends love each other.

Wang Won / King Chungseon of Goryeo (충선왕 忠宣王, 1275~1325) is the first ever half-blood prince/king in the history of Korea. His mother is a daughter of Kublai Kahn, the famous Mongol Emperor that Venetian merchant traveller Marco Polo served for many years.

Although King Chungseon’s life story has never been made into a drama or a movie, I think he is a really interesting historical figure because of his genius brain, cruel atrocity, identity crisis as a half-blood prince, Oedipus complex, and bisexuality.

Oh, he is the king who completely illegalized the notorious “Consanguine marriage†custom of Goryeo society. If you watched Moon Lovers : Scarlet Heart : Ryeo (2016 SBS) or Shine or Go Crazy (2015 MBC), you could understand what I mean. From then on, incestuous marriages gradually disappeared.'

I wish we would get more info on this drama. Yoona is done filming K2 in 2 weeks and im pretty sure Siwan also finished filming his movie. They also need to cast the other male lead to complete the love triangle, that role is equally important as Siwans and Yoonas, i hope they choose strong young actor. Also its sageuk so they need to cast huge number of people and since filming is supposed to start in a month they need to cast them in next two weeks cause they still need to have a  script reading, costume fittings, horseback riding /sward/ bow and arrow training if necessary etc. We only got two main leads, director ,locations and the broadcast network so far.

Also i'm obsessed with Shopping King Loui and Jealousy Incarnate right now, so i kinda hope they cast either Seo In Guk or Go Kyung Po for second male lead. Both dramas are finished around same time as The K2 so there is a chance. Though i would be happy with Byun Yo Han or Kim Bum too.

Same here, but we'll get more info soon hopefully. At least once THE K2 finishes, because right now lots of Yoona/SNSD fans are focused on THE K2. I'll request some Eng-Kor speakers on twitter to help us once THE K2 finishes. Hopefully they can give us some more detail on this drama, even spoilers like what happens in each chapter (I think this drama won't follow the book word by word anyway).

I'm guessing we haven't gotten any info on who the second male lead is because THE K2 is still airing, if you remember when this drama news came out, some netz were upset that they revealed this during THE K2 (dragging attention from the drama). So it's best to wait until THE K2 finishes.

In under a month we should know who the second male lead is and the writer. You know, I have an inkling feeling Go Kyungpo will do this drama, seeing as how he's hit it big with JI, I'm surprised he doesn't have an upcoming project lined up once JI wraps up. Maybe it's this drama?

More than the second male lead, I'm more worried about who the writer will be

I asked an OH translator (who's also a Yoona fan) to translate this blog post. She's so kind  she did it for us.

Please up vote her for translating it for us.

[Naver Blog Post] The King Loves Synopsis: Im Si Wan, the main character

So it seems Won & San will have absolutely no romance together. (Well he'll like her but she won't like him in that way).

Talk about friend zone

While there have been cases where the production staff has changed after being announced---I think "Picnic" just did it recently--that probably won't be the case here. With the filming starting in early December and with the entire drama being pre-produced they don't have as much leeway in that department.

But as someone who has recently finished reading "The King Loves" I just want to reassure you that both Park and No will be working with a very solid blueprint.

Can you make a small summary of each chapter or an overall summary of the main key events/scenes in the book please please pleaseee? >.<

I plan on posting my spoiler free general impressions of the book here AFTER "The K2" wraps up this week.

I am also currently writing a small summary of each chapter, think SparkNotes Lite, but I'm not sure how I want to share that information quite yet. Maybe I'll post it here in spoiler tags or maybe I'll start a private group pm and add people who are interested so that I can share some information and answer some questions without having to worry about people being spoiled.

Thank you so much! Yes please! I think it's best to have a private group PM.

I'm so lost but curious about the story

I'll ask who wants to join the private PM group on this thread when the time comes! You'll be the first I'll add  :chu:

WARNING! While this post is spoiler free, I wrote it thinking everyone here has at least read the brief synopsis that was released with the initial press release. If you haven’t, please go to dramabeans and read it first.

So after having read the books and stewing over them for a while, here are my thoughts. The book isn’t your traditional romance story, there’s much more to it than just that. While San and Rin are both fictional characters, many of the supporting cast and events that push the story forward are based on historical facts. Won, in particular, is very accurately portrayed so you can expect there will be a fair share of political talk in it as well. I expect the drama to pull back on some of the political aspects of the novel and pursue the romance and friendship aspect between our three main protagonist more, but I still expect it to have a bit more politics than say... "Moon Embracing the Sun" and it's honestly pretty interesting. With Goryeo (Korea) being ruled over by Mongolia (Yuan) at the time, this is a pretty touchy period of history for many Koreans so adhering to historical facts will be imperative to how well this drama is received. I remember "Empress Ki" receiving a huge backlash in Korea for how much it distorted history. Luckily for us, one of the books major selling points is it's historical accuracy so I don't expect that to become an issue here.

Our three main protagonist Won, San, and Rin are all very well fleshed out characters. But I think Siwan and Yoona fans in particular will be very happy with the range of emotions their characters will be able to play. It’s honestly a little crazy. On the other hand, Rin’s character is much more of a stoic character so I think even bringing on a more novice actor would be an okay choice there too. I should also mention that Rin is NOT a “third wheel†in this story. He is just as important to the story as Won and San are.

All in all, it was a very impressive book to read. From a fanboy standpoint, there were moments I was getting giddy just imagining Yoona acting some of the scenes out. From a literary standpoint, the sheer scope of the writing impressed me. The characters travel all over the Yuan Empire and while I'm not sure how much of it will be translated into the drama, one of the pro's of being a pre-produced drama is that we actually have the time to go overseas and film some of these scenes (I know for a fact that “Empress Kiâ€, another MBC drama, filmed a few scenes in China as well so I know that it’s possible).

A few users have been asking me to explain the relationship between Won, Rin and San a bit more so I decided to also post what I shared with them here in spoiler tags. And while I do foreshadow a few events, as a whole, I think it’s pretty spoiler free.

1. Won and Rin

So Won definitely wears the pants in this relationship. He's constantly nagging on Rin for being so stiff around him and pressures him to speak informally when it's just the two of them, often to no avail. Rin is described almost as an extension of Won himself, always standing by his side and willing to do anything the prince asks of him. Rin and Won share the same dream of making Goryeo a better place to live, for the people, and both help each other towards that goal.

2. Won and San

Won instantly falls for San, not romantically I mind you, but because a) her looks and b) her selfless nature. San, unlike Rin, is more than willing to talk down to Won, and Won loves her even more for that. At one point in the novel, he mentions that San was the only person he's ever met that didn't treat him as royalty.

3. Rin and San

Initially, Rin is very wary of San because she refuses to tell him her true identity. They constantly butt heads with each other and if it weren’t for Won they’d never get along. Nevertheless, Rin is very protective of San and is often the one to save her when she bites off more than she can chew.

And last but not least, if you want to be added to the group PM, where I'll be sharing a small summary of each chapter, add your name to the list below.

1. eMopRiNc3ss69x

2. mikiangel

3. flowerlover

4. burningsoul

5. Konjo

6. thedownfall

7. black phoenix

8. mayshy
9. shutupihateyou
10. Sweety You

Oh wow. I just read the PM. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!

It's a lot better than I thought!!  :rlytearpls: I won't be surprised if the writers change a few things here and there. Thankfully, they have a good foundation to work with here!

Yoona's San has a lot more backbone than Yoona's Anna, so I'm elated right now!!  :rlytearpls:

OMG i just realized JCW says Yoona-ya in your gif. :omg:

Looks like he is, yeah

thanks for the summary! i just read it. it's awesome! i really thought San would just be your usual kdrama pretty character like some ornament where her main purpose is just the leads trying trying to win over her lol but san's has a lot more depth than i expected  :omg: can't wait for siwan too. i'm used to his innocent characters, i'm excited how he will handle an anti-hero one this time.

Yes  :rlytearpls: Tbh to me, the most interesting characters are Won & San. Lin, too but not as much as the other two. CAN'T WAIT  :ahmagah:

hmm... Another popular prediction for Rin  by some knetizens is Ryu Jun Yeol. Quite a few think that its Ryu Jun Yeol.

ryu-jun-yeol-hwang-jung-eum.jpg

No offence to his fans, but his visual, aura, and chemistry  does not match with Yoona and Im Siwan. It will be a mismatch casting. Just freaking horrible.

:ahmagah: I love him!

Really?

'Wang Lin/Ryn - A man of royal descent named Ryn, described as elegant, refined, and upright in character. Won's childhood friend and bodyguard.'

I think it suits him tbh. The way Lin is described is extremely different to San & Won who are said to be strikingly beautiful.

I think he would suit with Yoona  :chu: Each to their own I guess.

what about the guy who played the bodyguard of the crown prince in park bogum drama or it maybe redundant for the actor

Jinyoung from B1A4? Love him also! Unfortunately, I doubt he'll do another sageuk so soon after Moonlight.

Wow okay where do I even start? Haha

:ahmagah: LOVED YOUR POST! Welcome, welcome~~~ Please visit here more often! It shouldn't be long now until our second lead is revealed!

I hate to say this, cause I feel like I'm going to break your heart... Choi Tae Joon is set to star in "Missing 9" so he's off the list too.  :rlytearpls:

And I hope everyone here knows that this drama isn't going to air till July/August of next year. Pre-production takes 5-6 months and then they spend another 2 months editing and making deals for foreign broadcast.  :rlytearpls:  :rlytearpls:

Oh my... really?! I can't remember where I read it, but I read that it's set to air March/April apparently. I don't mind if it's May/June but July/August is too far away  :rlytearpls:

Well seeing as they may be potentially heading overseas for some of the scenes, I guess I'm not all too surprised.

Looking at recently pre produced dramas:

Descendants of the Sun: Filmed from July - December (6 months). Aired: February. (2 months later)

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo: Filmed from January - June (6 months). Aired: August. (2 months later)

Just like you said...

So for this drama: Film from December - May (6 months). To air: July (2 months later)

 NOOOOO. I don't want to wait this long to see Yoona on my screen again!
