sharing a bit of info from a comment in dramabeans. i don't remember so sorry if this was alr posted

Here’s a first look at stills from Im Shi-wan’s (Misaeng) new sageuk romance melodrama The King Loves, in which he plays a Goryeo prince, Wang Won (later King Chungseon), right around the turn of the 14th century. His character is described as Janus-like—two-faced, ambitious, power-hungry—which will take Im Shi-wan out of his established image as sweet-faced and kind-hearted as he goes dark and duplicitous to play an antihero. I’m looking forward to seeing him expand his range; I think he has it in him to portray a hidden coldness behind the pretty facade, and hope the project offers a lot of meaty development for him to work with.

Based on a novel of the same name, The King Loves takes a fictional twist on the history and a “passionate melo†approach to the love triangle at the center of the story, which pits our prince against his former best friend, played by Hong Jong-hyun (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo). Yoon-ah (The K2) is the daughter of a wealthy and ambitious aristocrat with whom both men will fall in love, tearing apart their friendship.

Also cast are Jung Bo-seok (Monster) as Wang Won’s cold-hearted father, King Chungryeol, while Jang Young-nam (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) plays Won’s mother, a Yuan emperor’s daughter and Goryeo queen. Familiar dramaland ajusshi Lee Ki-young (Mrs. Cop, Masked Prosecutor) will play Yoon-ah’s father, who discovers that his wife’s sudden death was no accident but the result of a conspiracy, and that spurs him to make a big decision on behalf of his only daughter. Oh Min-seok (Misaeng) takes on a villain’s role, meanwhile, as an ambitious politician who presents fierce opposition to the king. I’m getting the sense that ambition is a common thread running through most of these characters’ lives…

So, details to fill in the blanks.

King Chungseon’s actual birth-name was Wang Jeong (왕정), but I do understand why production did this *hello Moon Lovers* Also Mongolian name of “Ijirbuqa†(small ox).

Chungseon’s mom (Jang Yeong-nam) is actually more than just a “Yuan emperor’s daughterâ€.
She is Qutlugh Kelmysh Beki, daughter of Kublai Khan, first Emperor of Yuan China.
Also, the very first Yuan princess to marry into the royal family of Goryeo.

From these info alone the timeline is after Korea’s defeat and surrender from the 13th-century Mongol invasions. Also the start of Korea’s almost-6-centuries-long subservience to China; the royal marriage alone made Goryeo a quda (political son-in-law) state under the Mongols’ rules.

Drama predates “Shindon†& “Empress Ki†(among others), but is a direct aftermath of “Age of Warriorsâ€. First time Korean drama will broadcast the disastrous 13th century era. Expect bald people…

Sooner or later 2 actresses should be introduced:

1. the 2nd Yuan princess to marry into Goryeo; Budashiri, great-granddaughter of Kublai (Kublai -> Zhenjin -> Gammala -> Budashiri)

2. Chungseon’s “Korean queenâ€

Nice to see Hong Jong-hyun back in the Goryeo era. Hope he’s not as nutty since he’s not a Wang anymore…

Oh Min-seok’s agenda must be anti-Mongol/Yuan then, eager to remove the foreign yoke of the quda status of Goryeo…

The conspiracy around Yoona’s mother might be involved with Qutlugh Kemlysh, since her death was rumored to be a murder and the allegations brought on a massive violent purge.

x

so in the drama we'll get a lot of san and won moments then. by reading the summary i just got the feeling that the romance part was more on rin and san and they were more fit for each other. during the casting news, i've alr said before that i don't think i can support a ship other than siwan-yoona but after the summary i'm totally for rin! well when the drama starts i'd like to be tormented again by these three laugh.png

going back to this thread, i'm reminded again how i love this pic. doesn't it reflects won's unrequited love for san so well? i mean his gaze are dripping honey but there's no love in her eyes at all. it's beautiful.

So they change the writer.. I questioned about this couple weeks before because I read some Japanese interview that said SJN's the writer of TKL.

Anyway I'm waiting for MBC to start the promotion.. it's less than a month now..

Wasn't there interviews from the writer going around before? I wonder if someone has translated that..

Yes.. SJN has quite reputation herself. Although her recent dramas don't get very good rating, Healer/Faith (Good Doctor), but those drama never considered bad drama. And if you read her interview about TKL, she seems to be so passionate talking about this drama. She said she intended TKL not to be cliche romance between man-woman only, but romance between human being, and that include friendship etc. I hope TKL can deliver this. Fighting!!

Not only falsify, KBS will also release new drama on the exact same date as TKL/TKIL, School 2017. Although I am not so sure about this drama, but aside from already has "Brand" from School series, they have that former ioi member as cast. So for younger generation, maybe they prefer this drama.

So yeah. The competition will be so fierce July 17. That's why I only aim for decent rating. Just give me good drama, strong plots, good acting and no inconsistency, then I'd be content.

Just info, SJN in her interview, she's so realistic. She said considering the situation nowadays, she'd be happy with 10 for rating. She knew how hard for drama to achieve high rating compare to the old day. She only hope the viewers get new feeling and experience watching TKL/TKIL..

I don't think school 2017 rn is that of a threat. I think the last one barely hit 10 % even with kim soohyun. It could have been concerning if kim yoojung's casting went through, considering moonlight's success but who knows really..

I'm really looking forward to eun san's character cuz she's not your typical dumb female lead. I have high hopes SJN didn't butcher her character. I'm watching ruler and ksh's char is so damn frustrating to me.

Edit: oh i think bride of the water god will also air at the same time.

It looks like a romance melodrama cover lol I hope there are more posters. Looks like they're hiding who Eun San likes in the relationship chart, I wonder if it will follow the book?

Maybe bc yoona and siwan have bigger brand names so they are gettinh pushed or maybe mbc just wants to mess with the viewers.. who knows. Would yall want them to follow the book too or not? I don't mind the strong promotions for san and won rn but i'm still hoping that they did stick with san ending up with rin. How she didn't give false hope to won and was so sure of rin is one of the reasons i love her character. i think i'm gonna be pissed if she's gonna be confused in the drama lol.
