WARNING! While this post is spoiler free, I wrote it thinking everyone here has at least read the brief synopsis that was released with the initial press release. If you haven’t, please go to dramabeans and read it first.

So after having read the books and stewing over them for a while, here are my thoughts. The book isn’t your traditional romance story, there’s much more to it than just that. While San and Rin are both fictional characters, many of the supporting cast and events that push the story forward are based on historical facts. Won, in particular, is very accurately portrayed so you can expect there will be a fair share of political talk in it as well. I expect the drama to pull back on some of the political aspects of the novel and pursue the romance and friendship aspect between our three main protagonist more, but I still expect it to have a bit more politics than say... "Moon Embracing the Sun" and it's honestly pretty interesting. With Goryeo (Korea) being ruled over by Mongolia (Yuan) at the time, this is a pretty touchy period of history for many Koreans so adhering to historical facts will be imperative to how well this drama is received. I remember "Empress Ki" receiving a huge backlash in Korea for how much it distorted history. Luckily for us, one of the books major selling points is it's historical accuracy so I don't expect that to become an issue here.

Our three main protagonist Won, San, and Rin are all very well fleshed out characters. But I think Siwan and Yoona fans in particular will be very happy with the range of emotions their characters will be able to play. It’s honestly a little crazy. On the other hand, Rin’s character is much more of a stoic character so I think even bringing on a more novice actor would be an okay choice there too. I should also mention that Rin is NOT a “third wheel†in this story. He is just as important to the story as Won and San are.

All in all, it was a very impressive book to read. From a fanboy standpoint, there were moments I was getting giddy just imagining Yoona acting some of the scenes out. From a literary standpoint, the sheer scope of the writing impressed me. The characters travel all over the Yuan Empire and while I'm not sure how much of it will be translated into the drama, one of the pro's of being a pre-produced drama is that we actually have the time to go overseas and film some of these scenes (I know for a fact that “Empress Kiâ€, another MBC drama, filmed a few scenes in China as well so I know that it’s possible).

A few users have been asking me to explain the relationship between Won, Rin and San a bit more so I decided to also post what I shared with them here in spoiler tags. And while I do foreshadow a few events, as a whole, I think it’s pretty spoiler free.

1. Won and Rin

So Won definitely wears the pants in this relationship. He's constantly nagging on Rin for being so stiff around him and pressures him to speak informally when it's just the two of them, often to no avail. Rin is described almost as an extension of Won himself, always standing by his side and willing to do anything the prince asks of him. Rin and Won share the same dream of making Goryeo a better place to live, for the people, and both help each other towards that goal.

2. Won and San

Won instantly falls for San, not romantically I mind you, but because a) her looks and b) her selfless nature. San, unlike Rin, is more than willing to talk down to Won, and Won loves her even more for that. At one point in the novel, he mentions that San was the only person he's ever met that didn't treat him as royalty.

3. Rin and San

Initially, Rin is very wary of San because she refuses to tell him her true identity. They constantly butt heads with each other and if it weren’t for Won they’d never get along. Nevertheless, Rin is very protective of San and is often the one to save her when she bites off more than she can chew.

And last but not least, if you want to be added to the group PM, where I'll be sharing a small summary of each chapter, add your name to the list below.

Just like you said...

So for this drama: Film from December - May (6 months). To air: July (2 months later)

 NOOOOO. I don't want to wait this long to see Yoona on my screen again!

-sorry to cut your post-

So it's true that TKL will be aired summer 2017???? Oh my gosh. Let's cry together...

About KSH.. That would be epic, but beside relationship rumor with Yoong, isn't he said to be enlisting soon?

after the backlash they got for announcing yoona while she was promoting the k2, maybe they are waiting for siwan to finish filming his movie before announcing anything big. or like ceemeetee said maybe Rin is wrapping up another project and they're waiting on that.

Oh this could be the case!!! Although me waiting for Rin is like

Did anyone ever mention how many episodes TKL would be? If so, I kinda miss that. Judging from the story it would be more than 16 episode right? And MBC sageuk usually has more than 20 episodes..

OK

Waaaah our won is cute.. Both our Won and San look younger than their actual age. Hahahaha..

This drama tells story from Goryeo era right? I'm kinda confused, when I google the costume from Goryeo era looks similar with Chinese costume, don't know which era. (Similar to what YoonA wore in GOWZY). Manchurian's influence or what? Hope the production team take special attention to customes and attires.. I wanna see the cast in beautiful outfits.. My YoonA will be playing the daughter of the wealthiest man, San dress/hanbok/outfits should represent that. Hahaha

The last time I asked Korean drama enthusiasts what kind of costume I could expect for Yoona, they told me to google Queen Noguk (~1350s).

btXZ09D.jpg

Usually you can guess how good the quality of the costume and set will be based on the production company, but since U-Story 9 is new, it's kind of hard to tell. They'll have Tencent money though so I'm hoping for the best.

Thanks emo.. Waaaa Queen Noguk. That's Park Se-Young from Faith, isn't it? 😊 I think I'm gonna like that style on San..

The PH is new, but not the PD, right? I just starting to watch DongYi just because I'm curious of his style directing sageuk.. 🙂

Correct me if i'm wrong but the purpose of those pre-produced dramas is to be exported and broadcast in China, isn't it? But now that China ban is upgraded, will Tencent continue to invest their money in this drama knowing that it is not going to make them money in China?

This.. I'm curious too..

Hello everyone...

Any pics of them from first reading?

YoonA looks so good wearing San's wardrobe, except for the hair lol. I think she will dye her hair jet black soon to make it blended with the hairpiece.

I read on Twitter they change her name into eun San? Can anyone confirm this? Does this mean they'll make changes to the story?

I made a character chart.

This is according to the book, so it's subject to change.

I did a typo error "names, unconfirmed actors and LOVE LINES may change"

Thanks Konjo..

So the actor playing Won father's changed? No more LR's reunion?

When will they release pic from script reading? The adult actor I mean, I saw the child actors pictures on Twitter, but not our main leads..

YoonA will be attending MBC drama award, maybe she will read the nomination with Siwan/HJH, I mean it's great event to promote TKL.. #crossmyfingers

I seriously hype for TKL.. and Siwan really suit period outfits.. he got that grace as King. Can't say anything about HJH, his pics is so faraway.. and my Yoona, she looks like a kid.. hahahaha cute San.

Here's an explanation of the scene (minor spoilers from the jejudo filming)

Episode 2

Won and Rin go to meet a wise old man, from the Tang dynasty, in hopes of learning from him. The wise old man then proposes a showdown between them and his disciple San.

Won is hiding his identity from San.

Thank emo ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‘ðŸ»

Recently I saw articles about PD interviews and writer interviews. But I'm confused because they interviewed Song Ji Na as the writer of TKL. The interview occurred 22 Jan 2017. Did TKL change writer? What happen to Park Chan-kyung and No Sun Jae? The article is in Japanese, and still hasn't had the proper translation

Here's the link of the interviews:

- Writer: http://koisuru-hangryu.com/column/4605/

THAAAANNNK YOOUUU.... â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸

Oh.My.God... I'm crying now.. it's just so beautiful, the teaser turn out so well. Starting with the trio running happily and then they cry their hearts out.. their friendships, sobs... I'm ready for my heart to be torn by #TheKingInLove I just can't decide which team I am.. team WonSan/RinSan.. or I might just be team TKL..

I also will not try to worry about the rating, although ofcourse I really hope the drama got decent rating...

According to dramabeans from awhile back:

"The writing team for The King Loves was unusual in and of itself in that it’s credited to a company of writers called Airborne. From what I gather, the story is that Airborne is made up of Song Ji-nah’s mentees, and she was initially only going to participate in an advisory role, like a creative director of sorts. However, due to the complexity of the plot and characters, Song Ji-nah got more and more involved in the writing process and essentially became the lead writer, though they’re still undecided as to whether they will change the writing credits to include her name."

Song Jin-ah is a quite famous scriptwriter. I love bunch of her dramas so I hope this wont be any exception. I'm loving the teaser so far, too!

Yes.. SJN has quite reputation herself. Although her recent dramas don't get very good rating, Healer/Faith (Good Doctor), but those drama never considered bad drama. And if you read her interview about TKL, she seems to be so passionate talking about this drama. She said she intended TKL not to be cliche romance between man-woman only, but romance between human being, and that include friendship etc. I hope TKL can deliver this. Fighting!!

is Falsify that much of a threat???

Yoona wears a very minimum make up, I've never seen an actress having on this little make-up on Saeguk drama. I prefer her to have a bit more touch for her make-up. But she is still so pretty

Not only falsify, KBS will also release new drama on the exact same date as TKL/TKIL, School 2017. Although I am not so sure about this drama, but aside from already has "Brand" from School series, they have that former ioi member as cast. So for younger generation, maybe they prefer this drama.

So yeah. The competition will be so fierce July 17. That's why I only aim for decent rating. Just give me good drama, strong plots, good acting and no inconsistency, then I'd be content.

Just info, SJN in her interview, she's so realistic. She said considering the situation nowadays, she'd be happy with 10 for rating. She knew how hard for drama to achieve high rating compare to the old day. She only hope the viewers get new feeling and experience watching TKL/TKIL..

I don't think school 2017 rn is that of a threat. I think the last one barely hit 10 % even with kim soohyun. It could have been concerning if kim yoojung's casting went through, considering moonlight's success but who knows really..

I'm really looking forward to eun san's character cuz she's not your typical dumb female lead. I have high hopes SJN didn't butcher her character. I'm watching ruler and ksh's char is so damn frustrating to me.

Edit: oh i think bride of the water god will also air at the same time.

Agree with School 2017, that's why I said I'm not so sure about this drama. And the last series, school 2015 was meh. But since it will be released on the same date, the audiences curiousity might be divided and impact the rating a bit. Not for long run, because their segments are completely different, school series is more suitable for younger viewers, while TKIL (damn I'm so used to TKL lol) is aiming general public. When Falsify starts, 24 Jul.. that's the real competition for TKL.

Also curious about EunSan. I hope SJN works miracle and gives justice not only to one characters but let all of them shine together.

Edited:

Ah, SW will enlist before TKL airs. And the PressCon will be held on this July 3.. so sad. But please take care yourself SW, and see you again in 2 years
