No matter how cleanly you are and how spotless you keep your house/apartment they will find a way inside. There's not a building in NYC that doesn't have them. There's not a building in NYC that doesn't have them. it's funny though, I always saw cockroaches at home in TX no matter how much we cleaned and doused the perimeter in insecticide. then I moved to MA and later Seattle and even the dirtiest houses here don't get them (we get house centipedes instead, but those aren't so bad). I just moved a month ago from DFW area to San Antonio and they are everywhere in Texas. I stayed at my uncles house for a while and a huge roach crawled on me while I was in the bed once. No joke, I never slept in that room again. Since I started working in the hospitality industry I've seen somethings that I never want to see in my life ever again.
