An Australian school has apologised after a boy who attended a school event in costume as Adolf Hitler was named as one of the "best dressed" students.

The scandal unfolded on Wednesday at St Philip's College, a private school in the outback town of Alice Springs.

The school apologised to the Jewish exchange students who were present.

The principal confirmed the student asked "a respected staff member" for permission to dress up as the Nazi dictator and that she had said yes.

"In a busy school, this student did go to a respected staff member said 'is this OK?' and the staff member said 'yes'," Roger Herbert told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Now she is absolutely shattered that she said that, and I'm really concerned about her wellbeing."

Last month a Western Australian mother was criticised for painting her white son's skin black in tribute to his idol, Australian Rules player Nic Naitanui.

Mr Naitanui, who is of Fijian heritage, said on Twitter that he did not believe there was any intentional offence but said the boy's mother should "reflect and choose an alternate method next time".

edit: wow, makes you realise that there are very ignorant people from all over the world. That teacher wh allowed it deserves all the backlash tbh, and there were jewish exchange students present,  :derp:

alot of people feel that hitler getting reduced to pop culture figure/ a cartoon like villian , diminishes/ belittles the horror of the holocaust and all the grave things the 3rd Reich did.

you might not see it as a big deal, but other people who come from the areas affected would be more sensitive..

i think its against the law in germany to show nazi symbols and dress up as hitler,

How does dressing up like him make him a cartoon figure ? You just look like him thats it

I live in germany and no its not against the law just really inappropriate but i think people here overreact as well.

I completely agree that it should be against the law to support his actions but dressing up like him ? Come on

i thought daniel from abnormal summit said it was ainst the law, maybe he was just talking about symbolism.

basicly treating hitler like a costume, people dress up like vampires, ghosts, characters from films. by putting dressing up as Hitler in the same category some feel like its turning him more into a cartoon villian.

its kind of the same argument regarding black face.

i guess not everyone will see eye to eye on that point. but i and alot of others feel like that.

and im sure there are lots of others that dont think its a bad thng.

Yet, more people think this is the best punishment to a terrible person, humiliated, ridiculed and stripped out of his power. This is exactly the things he didn't want to happen in his lifetime, this are the things he tried to avoid. He deserves everything he feared he would get. It doesn't belittle the horror of the Holocaust and other atrocities he committed, only him. The victims are eternally memorialized, he is forever shit on.

it should not be a problem to dress up as historical political figures good or bad. people dress up as Mao, Genghis Khan, Stalin etc and don't get the same backlash.

so why Hitler? because jews, that's why. they will never let it go. lil whiny bitches
