just stop talking to her; casually hang out with her less and less. i don't know why anybody would "talk to them directly" about not wanting to be their friend anymore, that's really rude and awkward for both of you.

You can just ignore her altogether and dont respond to her texts. Someone I thought was a friend stopped talking to me suddenly one day and that one day led to a year and I figured she didnt want to be friends any more so I was like fuck it.

Whenever I want to distance myself from someone, I don't reach out to them ever and if they reach out to me, I just say whatever is necessary to be polite but I don't continue the conversation. We just eventually drift apart.

Pretty much this. If she tries to talk to you, just give her really curt answers and eventually she'll get the message.

There's no a good form to say something like that upfront so I would opt for progressively stop talking and hanging with that person. This cab be super tough if you belong to same circle, so chances are you can't completely get rid of that friendship if that's the case.

I've only done this once in college, I didn't want to be mean and also that person hadn't done anything wrong but at the same time I've felt quite uncomfortable with his presence and preferred to hang alone. It was like when you stare at a puppy in the streets for a moment but then the puppy starts following you around >_>. So I just started ignoring him and acting like I didn't see him when we crossed, he got the point fortunately. Also when I got tired of some people within my social circle I would just start hanging with a different group, like making new friends; I think it's better this way since you're not directly rejecting them and more like you're exploring different options.
