Lee Soo Geun (38), Tak Jae Hoon (45), singer Tony Ahn (35), and three other celebrities who were indicted for illegal online gambling, received their sentences today.

Shin Myun Hee, a chief judge at the Seoul Central District Court gave Lee Soo Geun, Tak Jae Hoon, and Tony Ahn a six months prison sentence suspended for one year at the sentencing trial, which was held on December 27.

Prior to this, during the final trial held on December 6, the three celebrities admitted to the charges made by the prosecuting attorney and pleaded for a favorable handling of their case. The prosecution stated, “Their acknowledgement of the crime and regret for their wrongdoings were taken into account.† The prosecution demanded a 10 months prison sentence for Tony Ahn, eight months to Lee Soo Geun, and six months to Tak Jae Hoon in prison with two years probation each.

According to the prosecutor, they were charged for gambling large amounts of money on the English Premier League matches through their smart phones.

The prosecutor also added, the other celebrities who were charged but gambled a smaller amount of money were charged with a fine: broadcaster Boom and singer Andy each received a fine of 5 million won, and comedian Yang Sae Hyung received a fine of 3 million won.

Investigation revealed Tony Ahn gambled 400 million won from May 2009 to March 2012, Lee Soo Geun gambled 370 million won from December 2008 to June 2011, and Tak Jae Hoon gambled 290 million won from February 2008 to April 2011.

Investigation also revealed Andy gambled 44 million won, Boom and Yang Sae Hyung gambled 33 million won and 260 million won (*correction: it's 26 million), respectively.

Earlier this year, comedian Kim Yong Man was charged and tried for gambling over 1 billion won. The investigation for this case led to obtaining information about these celebrities.

According to the investigation, Tak Jae Hoon, Lee Soo Geun, and Kim Yong Man were lured by an individual who was a member of their soccer club. Tony Ahn, Andy, Yang Sae Hyung, and Boom, who were serving in the military during the same time period, were lured by a broker while they were on leave from the military.

edit:

since some might not understand the final court decision it's a suspended sentence.

A suspended sentence is a legal term for a judge's delaying of a defendant's serving of a sentence after they have been found guilty, in order to allow the defendant to perform a period of probation. If the defendant does not break the law during that period, and fulfills the particular conditions of the probation, the judge usually throws out the sentence. (wiki)

No one is going to prison.

well it's only 6 months

but by the time they got out their showbiz career is dead basically

yeah, that what I've been thinking too. and I'm shocked Lee Soo Geun is one of them.

Good for Hyeri that she has broken up with Tony. Otherwise, her name  will be dragged along with Tony to the prison.

Andy....thank god he only got a fine but still....I'm quite shocked at him too.

Damn a bullet Hyeri dodged a whole canon ball breaking up with Tony Ah when she did, had she stayed with him Girls Day would be dragged into this mess as well (and given their increase in popularity that would not be good)

Some of them are actually going to prison. Would have thought they'd wriggle their way out of it since they're celebrities and the Korean judicial system is weak.

going to prison

Good. Just because they're celebrities, it doesn't mean they should lessen their sentences or not go prison. They must've pulled a few strings for sure already.

I was so shocked at Andy. STILL AM.  -_-

Going to prison for gambling is a bit too much imo.... they are USING THEIR OWN MONEY not stealing. And yet murderers and stalkers are free  -_-

edited the post for those who might not be familiar with the law. No one is going to prison. The final decision of the court is a suspended sentence.

Finally, a confirmation on the sentence. Online gambling is illegal but widely available on the internet. I'm sure they're not the only ones involved in online gambling. But their cases will act as a deterrent to others.

It's a suspended sentence so if they don't break the law within that 1 year period, they can escape imprisonment.

Suspended prison sentence doesn't seem to bad imo. They just have to make sure not to screw things up within that time period.

Erh... Andy, Boom and Yang Sae Hyung were fined one month ago. Why make a thread now ?

To update people on the conclusion of this scandal?

Wait, so all of them stopped gambling 1-2 years ago and were still getting charged for it. Korea needs to really work on their judicial system IMO. I know gambling is illegal in Korea, but If they made some sort of gambling legal it would probably help their economy.

I'm surprised that Boom and Andy are involved

I hope their reputation and career would not get damaged by this.

It's illegal gambling, errr nothing too serious....

Andy's close to Tony Ahn. And Boom is Andy's army friend.

I can see the link actually.

Korea does have casinos though. I think it's for tourist so yea...helping the economy.

Lol at people being shocked by Andy. Why? The Shinhwa guys never made themselves anything they aren't. They've always been upfront and have had scandals before. So only people who are shocked are people who don't really follow Shinhwa or something.  But Andy didn't even gamble that much compared to others. He's already laying low and not doing anything to "reflect" on himself lol.  But I'm glad they all didn't go to prison for this like wtf. But I bet they'll just lay low and it will be fine. I think Korea needs to update their laws with this though. It's kinda silly imo. Just be like Vegas and have it regulated.  That can work right?  Instead of having it flat-out illegal.  And yeah Andy is friends with Tony and Boom.  The public really loves Andy anyways so he shouldn't have any issues. He's always been really popular.
