Expired....

So today is my younger brother's birthday and he asked my aunt to make pavlova. It was pavlova with strawberry and mixed berries sauce which contain raspberry and blacberry. Every engredients used was fresh and new. But when it time to eat it my other brother said it spicy. And i was like " Its a pavlova why would it taste spicy". And then i ate it. I was like  . It's spicy plus bitter!!!!!

Then my sis and my brother that is having birthday all said its spicy and bitter. We are all feel so weird as why the hell it taste like that. So we taste each things like the whip cream and fruit alone to see how it taste and it taste fine. But when i tasted the pavlova itself it spicy and bitter. We are all asking why and why and why....then my aunt said the reason might be due to the EXPIRED CREAM OF TARTAR!!!!! We were all like  :wut: ???? Why the hell she would use it if it's already expired???? She reasoned she only a very little of it. A normal amount ppl always use to make pavlova. But damn it affected the whole pavlova really bad. The texture is good but the taste...........

So I searched the net what happen if ppl use/consume exired cream of tartar but nothing found.....ok maybe i didn't searched properly but most things i found is it said cream of tartar probably don't expired or doesn't have expiration date. Well I was kinda worried if it will affected our health or anything like that but we found nothing.

So anyone in onehallyu ever bake anything using expired cream of tartar??? Was that the reason why  the pavlova taste like shit?? If anyone ever had consume any food using expired cream of tartar did you get sick after that? Hopefully not tho  :._.:

But seriously this experience has totally ruin my love for pavlova..... btw the cream of tartar was bought in 2011 tho.

what's a pavlova and a cream tartar  :ninja:

Definition of Cream of tartar from wiki - Potassium bitartrate, also known as potassium hydrogen tartrate, with formula KC4H5O6, is a byproduct of winemaking. In cooking it is known ascream of tartar. It is the potassium acid salt of tartaric acid, a carboxylic acid.

Basically it's use as a stabilizer....

Omg, I need to make this. It looks delicious...  :stare:

Thanks for the visuals. Now I'm gonna be craving it all day, but that's okay.

Good luck in making it   but make sure you search the video first on how to make it so nothing will go wrong...

I LOVE pavlovas! Making them is super simple and rewarding too, except the part where you pour all the sugar in and get worried about diabetes..

I haven't had a pavlova turn spicy and bitter on me (although one did cool too fast and crumbled into a mess), but I have had a batch of scones turn really bad with a metallic powdery taste because we used the wrong/expired bicarbonate soda (aka baking soda).

Since bicarbonate soda and cream of tartar have essentially the same purpose.. my guess is that you guys put in the wrong brand of CoTT or the expiry had something to do with it. As for my scones, i retried the recipe with the same brand (non-expired) and it STILL came out tasting wrong. So I guess its luck whether or not the brand's recipe agrees with your baking recipe..
