How do less active idols survive?

Hello,

earlier this year I read an article about former After School member Kim Jungah, who was worried about how to make a living after leaving the group and agency. Later that year, Lizzy (After School/Orange Caramel) was a guest on Running Man and she mentioned that she barely got any jobs. She used to be very active both in music and tv shows.

This got me thinking. How do idols, who still belong to a group but are barely active, survive? How do they make a living? I understand that the company pays for the dorm, but what about other stuff, like food, clothes, entertainment etc.? Do idols get a basic monthly salary?

I don't know about boy groups, but I know lesser-known girl groups perform at a lot of small/private events and festivals. they actually have a lot of schedules if you look at the amount of fancams https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU_vu6ZgG4Zi7h4xRL6dwDQ/videos

IDK if they get paid very much for those, but at least they're busy?

Euna Kim rapper from The Ark (disbanded) and now on Unpretty Rapstar, said she was working at italian restaurant part time to keep living on Seul (her parents are on USA and also send her money)

Also on this season the Jewlery Member Ha Ju Yun said after their group disbanded after 14 years she needed to work in retail, a pizzeria, and other jobs to get buy without her idol income

Yeah. It's actually sad, because she has been working very hard for so many years, and Jewelry wasn't a nugu group... but once your time fly, you have no won left. At least most "regular" jobs give you a stability. Fame is fleeting

Wow! Thanks for the good replies. It makes sense now.

I remember how Nine Muses struggled with part time jobs in order to pay the rent and prolly food and other bills too.

Doesn't the company pay for the rent/housing?

Really! 14 years and still need to take these kind of jobs (I'm not looking down on these kind of jobs). Idol life is hard!

You would expect them to be loaded especially since she wasn't in a small group!

Yes she was from small group. She was in Jewelry from 2008 to 2014 and big majority of that time the group wasn't successful.

Only in her 1st year in 2008 they released really big hit song but that's it. It was like one hit wonder none of their songs after that did really well nor did their popularity increase.

So it is not surprising she didn't have like any money left saved up after she left the group.

That is even sadder to me then... They struggled for 14 years. I'd never want to be an idol!
