What causes a group to become popular/hot topic?

I would like to know how SNSD and 2ne1 became so big. During the time I've been interested in kpop it's always been them (well obviously SNSD mostly).

It obviously helps that they're from big corporations with lots of financial muscle and great influence in Korean media and culture, so I guess they can hype up their artists easily. Still how did it happen?

For SNSD my guess would be a lot of PR work + cute image + lots of variety show work. Then I guess "Gee" propelled them into super stardom?? Or were they already considered an elite girl group? Did they have to confirm their status after Gee?

big company. bigger company = more exposure

good/consistent music (the "it" song is important too)

looks is a bonus factor.

media play + scandals are not needed but they do happen

and then there is luck

OP's sig is so adorable (the gif)  :stare:

They confirmed their status after "Gee" in Korea.

A big company will have more connections which is great for media play.

  • Marketing.
  • Variety
  • A grip of mainstream tastes for that group
  • Not listening to netizens like us who post on forums or on comment sections
  • Luck.

The successful companies have a peg on what sells in a specific marketplace, make music to satisfy that marketplace and go from there. The reason why i say that they don't listen to us is because our idea of what makes a good KPOP song is different from those who are casual listeners. Ultimately, what matters the most are casual listeners who aren't so wrapped up in the goingson of the industry like we are. Hence why you see examples of songs that many of us collectively shit on or ignore that still go on and sell well digitally.

Korea didn't have many idols before compared to now, and the old groups also disbanded faster than now... and girl groups didn't get popular easily, only SES and FinKL did and that was long ago. WG bring back the girl groups popularity and they became the most popular thanks to music (Tell Me), not really thanks to promotions, but it was for their music + Sohee got very popular for looks (cute). then WG left and since there wasn't really that many girl groups, and the 2nd most popular was SNSD, they took the #1 position just after releasing Gee + getting a lot of promo on shows etc. 2NE1 debuted the same year (2009) with a style different than WG/SNSD so they also find their own public.

Well yes, but were they #1 with Gee? Where were they before it?

If they didn't become top with it, then when?

Which are their best songs/biggest hits? Personally I can't think of that many.

Record company plays a big part; big record company = instant exposure

They were #3 on Gallup in 2008 so they very much were well-known before Gee. Hell, there were SNSD vs WG media articles in 2007. It's just that WG absolutely eclipsed them in digital sales and had two national songs.

Gee took them to #1. Genie is what solidified them.

So in essence being from SM and great timing?

Their company. For example coming from SM = attention even pre-debut. then there's scandals (obviously), and also looks (for example Hyosung is only discussed because of her boobs) and probably some other things~

do you guys think that being in a big company guarantees success? because there's also something to be said for being in a small company where the resources and money is fully focused on a few artists rather than thinly spread over many groups unless it's like a multimillion company

Being in a big company gives you advantages in marketing but it doesn't not guarantee success. Each of the big 3 have had their duds.

To some degree - yes, take EXO for example.

Company

Promotion

Marketing factor

Catchy song (subjective but it should at least a good portion of the public should like it)

Promote on shows to show how "dorky and funny and sweet" to build fans attachment

Look - but I think if someone is kinda average but have good/interesting personality then they can still draw in fans, tho probably not a good endorsement star.

ok, but they were basically filling a void in korean pop culture?

I feel like it'd be impossible for any group to be that big if they released songs as good now tbh

The question wasn't about success though

it was about how to become popular/hot topic

You can become popular or a hot topic without being successful

a group debuting in SM or YG will FOR SURE be discussed and known, even before debut.
