One girl said that there were people who would wear them all year round. Back in 2011 during the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster, there was a huge boost in sales for surgical masks in Japan because of radiation fears. And there's one particular reason that somehow doesn't make it up there or cut, that is to protect others from catching their germs when they're sick, especially on public transport.
