CreepyPanda 5,157 Posted August 19, 2016 Share Posted August 19, 2016 Okay so now that I've calmed down I'm going to do a proper review of the song: Overall rating: 6.75 out of 10 The song: The song is solidly decent. The beat is super catchy and the production is great. I think they could have left out that subtle reverb effect on her voice, but it doesn't ruin the song or anything. The lyrics are good - exactly what I expected from the song. I LOVED the Lauryn Hill reference, being a huuuuge fan of L.Boogie. I would have liked to have heard some vibrato rather than that straight-cut style of singing she did - there's nothing wrong with it, but I don't think it does justice to her vocal capacity. Also, there really needed to be a refrain or something where the second "hey now get off my cloud" part was (the bit where she was grinding on those guys in the video). It feels a bit repetitive just having that same verse there. I also need to mention that her rap verse in the song (which was shorter than I'd expected, but not disappointingly so) was FIRE. EXACTLY what I wanted to hear. I loved her rap in Dr. Pepper (the song was meh, but her voice sounded so goooood) but I wasn't a huge fan of her style in Hello Bitches, which felt kinda thin, high and underwhelming. The video: Good video. Like the song, solidly decent. There are some really great looking moments in it, and she looks GORGEOUS obviously because when does she not? Great choreography, CL showing those casual but impressive dance skills! We do need to mention the elephant in the room though, which is the 1975 quality CGI job on those clouds on the end... tragic TBH but it was only like 10 seconds so whatevs. (ALSO I can't not say this - the jacket she was wearing at the end plus the fact that her lower legs were inside the crappy CGI cloud made her look about 2 feet tall) Overall: A solid official US debut for CL! It's not the sort of song that is going to blow anyone away, or become the next musical phenomenon, but I can hear it getting radio play and being generally liked. It's good quality, catchy, chill and exciting at the same time - pretty much all that you could hope for. Plus, she looks fantastic in the video, so that will help. ALSO let's give it up for (hopefully) some more ASIAN REPRESENTATION IN THE WESTERN INDUSTRY! CL isn't a big deal yet, but if she breaks through, she'll be one of the few Asian performers in the mainstream industry! That's very exciting, and opens up a LOT of doors. Come to think of it, Bom would have been AWESOME on lifted - it's exactly her type of song! I doubt we'll see a Bom feature on her EP, but there's always hope for the future.
