CL using blacks as props in Lifted mv......?

so i've seen some comments on here and on other social media platforms pertaining to CL and the use of POC in the Lifted mv and i wanted opinions about it

so, I"m wondering, based on where this mv was filmed

where the area is rich with people from multicultural backgrounds and sub cultures

am I the only one who would have thought it would have been weird if there weren't a plethora of POC?

(CL is POC as well, btw)

had there weren't, I feel like some people would flip it and say "it wasn't an accurate representation of the rural scene in that particular era" etc etc

moving that aside, here's my next point

i also some comments that CL were using blacks as props

i find it odd how it's often preached on here and other platforms about representation for minorities and diversity but when it happens in a non-stereotypical way (TBF for example was full of stereotypes) all of sudden they're being used as props...?

never mind the fact that she sampled from Method Man, one of the many innovators in hip hop in the 90s

IMHO this was a step up from some of her past works, an appreciation more than an appropriation

and in a way, it subtly perpetuates stereotypes bc apparently having a good time, interacting, or even being in the general vicinity of POC in this context is synonymous with a thug, ghetto, and tryhard image that's apparently being pushed

also, an excerpt from CL's noisey interview:

Q: What was the experience of shooting in NYC like? it looked like a good time…

CL: It was amazing! I’ve been a fan of Dave Meyers and his music videos. Everything about this shoot was in the moment. We brought out kids we knew last minute. We walked around the city with a camera. Even the scene on the bridge was unplanned. We filmed at a lot of iconic places in NY that I grew up seeing in videos so it was fun. Working with Method Man was such an honor. I love his music even though I didn’t grow up in his era.

they knew the people that were in the MV, and it just wasn't some random  hunt for the nearest black person they could find which I see a lot of implication of tbh

and one more thing i'd like to point out as well

2 similar dances, but the people below are props?

something doesn't add up

if anything, those saying that comes off a bit prejudice, considering the only difference is ethnicity, and not to mention there isn't any implication of fetishizing of the black man in this particular MV

so, that's all I have to say about this,

agree/disagree?

i am up for a civil debate about this

Last I checked, CL is a Person of Color herself.... :imstupid:

on a serious note..this MV was filmed in both Brooklyn and the Bronx, predominantly in places where Hispanics and Blacks live. I am quite happy that they included a more diverse crowd in her MV. I always cringe when I watch Kpop MVs trying to be "international" but have like three or four white people in it. Haha...

yeah..because they were only black people in her mv..lets ignore the hispanics, asians and whites she had all up in there as well I think people are just trying to find something to drag her for..my friends loved the song and thinks its interesting that there's an asian girl who raps whos trying to break into the scene note..they dont know who the fuck cl is either so..

I agree with your thread

+1

Plus, I didn't only see black people in the MV, she used a variety of ethnicities and races, like, I saw a few whites, and I also saw a few people with latin roots, and as a latin myself i'm pretty sure I know what i'm talking about, I saw someone on youtube complaining that she didn't use a single asian, but CL is asian so she counts as the asian representation.

tbh i didnt watch the mv or listen to the song, but ppl do this a lot berating non-black singer for using black back up dancer

ei. Sky ferriera got shit for her "i blame myself" MV dancer

so did Lily Allen with her "Hard Out Here" MV.

i just ignore it if it has no merit, which i wont say in this case since i havent seen it

lmao also she's got herself a "shawty"

She was paying homage and using lines from a song by Wu Tang Clan called 'Method Man'. Method Man was actually in the music video

where is your sig from lol

I know people were going to be shitting on her for this when I saw the MV lol

If she had white dancers she'd get hate too because people would say that she was appropriating or trying to be black or something without actually having black people.

If the black people in the MV had no qualms with being dancers and actors that what's the big whoop. She one of the artists that I think truly appreciates black culture
