Common Core Education

Common core is so silly. The way I learned math growing up was through memorization. It's fast, it made sense, it stuck with me for the rest of my life. I just feel like it's a waste of everyone's time to explain why 3 x 4 = 12. it just is.

Yes, it's terrible. Especially for the younger grades. There really is no point in teaching abstract ways to do something as simple as 8+5 to little kids. Sometimes memorization should just be the right way.

It is stupid when it comes to very simple equations but they are trying to teach the method that will make mental arithmetic with larger numbers easier.

This common core goes not only on math but language, arts and science.

this. And when I was in elementary school we would have timed multiplication quizzes where if you know your multiplications table well enough like the back of your hand, you can zip through it and complete it in less than 2 minutes. I remember kids in my elementary school years would compete with other on these to see who would finish the timed quiz first.

This is from their own website

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the standardsâ€) represent the next generation of K–12 standards designed to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life by the time they graduate from high school.

Idk how they do this exactly. What I've been hearing is that this was passed illegaly (somehow)

I did that too when I was a kid. :D Yea, it sucked for like a week or two to memorize the multiplication table, but when you got it nailed down, the quizzes are so much fun and you just compete with your friends (super nerdy, I know)

oh language arts. I got confused because you said language, arts and science with a comma mark after language because language and language arts are two completely different things.

i just graduated with a degree in elementary education, so i am quite familiar with common core, lol. some of the schools i observed at didnt even have curriculum because of the sudden switch. there are mixed reactions about it, but imo, it's just silly and not practical in most situations, lol. i'll be more exposed to it cause i start student teaching tomorrow  :._.:
