Kyrie 6,251
Wow, did they not tell you not to drink from a straw? Any suction, including spitting, will pull the blood clots out and give you dry sockets. D: You may want to call your oral surgeon and tell them what happened. Even one sip is enough to pull the clot out. It'd be best not to use a straw again for about a week. At least.

5th_wall 1,042
1. Relax 2. Drinking or eating isn't good for two reasons: 1. your mouth is extra sensitive right now even though you might not notice it right away since you're probably still somewhat sedated and 2. to avoid getting any blood or bacteria into the wound in your mouth Straws are especially bad because they are basically funneling liquid that may be too cold or too hot or too anything directly close to your wound. If you suck super hard, straws can even re-open your wound from the suction. That's not very common though, so don't get freaked out. Considering that you are on your period, a light bleeding is not worrisome. If it is a strong bleeding or you feel a pulling, or thumping sensation though, you should give your doctor a call just to be sure. Also, stay away from the sweets for today. bluetoile 355
I would wait and see whether or not you experience any dry socket symptoms before contacting your dentist. If you are experiencing symptoms of dry socket, then it's most likely that using a straw did dislodge the blood clot and you should contact your dentist ASAP. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dry-socket/basics/symptoms/con-20025990 Depending on the tooth that was removed and the way it was removed, there can be various amounts of bleeding. Like I bled for half a day after the dentist had to cut my gums in order to remove an impacted wisdom tooth. If you have any at home, tea bags are an excellent alternative to gauze and is what you should use if the bleeding persists. Just moisten the tea bag and use it like you would use gauze. There is only little bleeding now so I'm not worry anymore except the straw thing. I slurped very slow and away grom the area plus the cotton is still inside when I slurped using straw so that may not take off the blood clot right...... 5th_wall 1,042
The warnings about the blood clots are there for a reason but it's very unlikely that you pulled anything, since you'd know that by now (it's rather painful too). Just be careful now, don't use a straw, take tiny sips and no sweets or anything like that for a while. I would advise against the tea bags because that's not super sanitary. Most importantly, relax. The fact that you are on your period is part of the reason why you are bleeding - which is why some dentists will ask about it, but it's not a big deal. If you are not in pain and the bleeding is minimal and stops within the next hours, no need to worry. If there is still minimal bleeding later, call your dentist and describe the situation. I Googled there a site said I shouldn't at all for today and other site said I can but avoid the area around it..... and how I even rinse after brushing when I'm not supposed to rinse my mouth today? The aftercare can be a little cinfusing as this is m first time dealing with it.
5th_wall 1,042
Your dentist really did not do a good job preparing you for all this. Don't rinse the mouth today, only brush if you really feel that you must and then completely avoid that general area. Don't gargle etc. Just try your hardest to avoid irritating the area.
