Alex from RANIA is now the new leader!

The newly added member, Alex, will be coming back as the new leader of RANIA. What are your thoughts on this? I think it's great, but has her korean gotten better; has she adapted to Korea? Although, it is not mandatory for a leader to always be in charge of speaking (i.e. Jihyun from 4minute, Soyeon from T-ara). This is major since last year she was the first non-asian to enter kpop and now she is the first non-asian to be a leader in a group! Congrats Alex, Fighting!

Anticipate RANIA's comeback!

Theories on why Alex is the leader

1) more media play

> DR wasted their "first not-half-korean black kpop idol" card on 20 seconds of Alex running on and off stage and never knowing what was going on in interviews [that's a slight on DR, not alex in any way]. So the only way to really make her non-asian status relevant again is to make her the leader.

2) she's the oldest member

> The oldest used to /always/ be the leader whether they wanted it or not--ex. Taeyeon (SNSD). But nowadays the leader can be any member, even the maknae. The fact that they made Alex who's only been learning Korean/living in Korea for about 7 months (not counting her 3-month stint in LA) the leader of a Korean music group promoting in Korean in Korea basically guarantees she won't be the spokesperson of the group. That job'll probably still fall to Seulji like it did during Demonstrate.

> Whether this'll prove a good strategy or a DR-esque one is yet to be seen, because often the leader's who AREN'T spokespeople for their groups are quickly overshadowed (like most people have no idea Taeyeon's the leader of SNSD since she's not the "voice" of the group, the same way everyone thinks Hongki is the leader of FT Island but he isn't).

3) she has the most music industry experience

> The thing we have to remember though is, as far as her industry experience goes, she only has AMERICAN music industry experience. compared to all 5 other members of RaNiA she has significantly less korean industry experience [which maybe the music producing is similar but the actual culture of how k-pop groups promote is totally different from america].

all 5 other girls have trained longer and already spoke korean before they joined the group. one of the new girls was in a former k-pop (trot-music-style) group called LPG so she's already familiar with promoting and all that. seulji & hyeme both joined RaNiA months before Alex.

> Plus people talk about her connections, also almost exclusively American. She'll get to know more Korean producers etc as time goes on, but it's not like she's got SBS in her back pocket or anything~~

--For most A1STs what this means MOST is that it's like DR's way of saying "she's gonna be a real member this time guys we promise" lolz

> As far as her Korean, she's yet to say anything more than a distant word or two in a Snapchat, and although people keep asking her to speak and wondering if she's able to, she continues to communicate exclusively in English (except for the very basic introductory sentence she posted recently on twitter). And no, referencing a clip where she said "I'm studying 70 words a day" filmed back in Dec 2015 before she left the country for 3 months is not an adequate measure of her Korean ability lol.

> So that'll be the main test I think as far as people accepting her position go--can she formulate complete sentences without having to read off a cue card & understand 70% of what's spoken to her, and has her pronunciation gotten any better from the few things she said during the Demonstrate era (cause it was awkward haha). Hopefully she's had enough time to study at least broadcast-specific Korean so expectations are fairly high.

I personally hope she'll work some Korean into her rap even if it's still mostly English. It's kinda cool when Koreans rap in English, but there is really nothing impressive about an English speaking person from an English speaking country rapping in English.
