Charlie Hebdo faces 'imminent' attack after publishing front page image of naked Muslims

Magazine has reported multiple threats made on its Facebook page to the police. Screen-Shot-2016-08-13-at-17.11.18-640x4
The satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo has received death threats after it published another controversial front page which has been accused of mocking Muslims.

Commenting on the decision to ban burkas from beaches in Cannes, the latest issue depicts a man and woman with a traditional beard and hijab running naked on the beach with the caption “The reform of Islam: Muslims loosen upâ€.

The issue was published on Wednesday and the staff received a threat that a new attack was imminent via the magazine’s Facebook page, Le Parisien reported.

Officers from the BRDP branch of the Paris police said this is not the first time the magazine has been threatened since the terror attack on their offices in January 2015

An investigation opened by the force revealed that the magazine had seen 60 threats, insults and anti-Semitic remarks on their page in July and August.

Eric Portheault, the co-owner of the newspaper, told Le Parisien: “We have filed a complaint with the police of the 13th arrondissement of the Paris police over the threats.

“It never stopsâ€.

The magazine is still under heavy police protection after 10 staff members and two police officers were murdered when Islamist terrorists stormed an editorial meeting and opened fire.

I'm sorry but they are clearly islamophobes

I understand that it's freedom of speech and everybody can say what they want

however they're clearly over doing it and it's not the first time,

image if they did the same thing but with black people

violence is never the answer tho but these days nobody is safe

Not a big fan of them either from the little I do know of the magazine. But bomb threats and shootings is an insane response.

(in Denmarkk there are still people living under police protection because of drawings released in 2005)

Nah, I don't think they are trash at all. I like how they stand against censorship. There is no need to get provoked by them. The reason they go after islam is since many takes such offense at it.

I think it's disrespectful that they would just mock something that 6 million French muslims think is holy. One of my old professors would always say that "one's freedom ends when someone gets hurt" (lack of a better translation), and this journal hurt a lot of people.

I really don't like their style of satire, but I seriously hope the police can keep them safe this time.

The best thing to do when you don't like someone's work is to ignore them, violence is not a solution.

That's not a good comparison though.

Islam is a set of values, ideas and behaviours that can be criticised (like any other religion), while blackness is just a genetic physical trait that can't be changed. Their satire might not be that great, but it should be completely acceptable in a modern country to criticise religion.

I agree. It can be criticized, not everyone is expected to accept and believe in what muslims believe in. That's why it's open to criticism. But more than criticizing, they're MOCKING the religion. And that, in my very own opinion, is unacceptable.

as I said before they can say what they want, we have freedom of speech and press in France

however they keep attacking Islam again and again and again

I mentioned black people because we are a minority just like muslims and I can understand how they feel seeing these kind of headlines over and over. I understand that they want to be edgy and show they are not affraid but they're over doing it

especially because they are attacking a minority that is already hated in France and in the rest of the world

They didn't provoke Islam , they drew naked muslims , huge difference .

People sending them death threads are stupid tbh , why not make them go bankrupt instead . They live off people's reaction , by not giving them the reaction they are expecting you are indirectly contributing to the failure of their business .

I kinda see your point. Satire should target traditional values and powerful people, but muslims are a not-so-well-liked minority so harsh satire against them doesn't make much sense.

Sure I wouldn't call it very respectful per se. I am of the belief however that everything needs to be challenged. Charlie Hebdo in my opinion helps to disarm these very loaded subjects, while also giving critique to various issues.

Sure they have a standpoint in the far left, everyone has their place. I'm not saying they are perfect and right all the time. But just because we see a picture of a funny muslim in their publications doesn't mean they are spitting on islam. It is all interwoven in satire, sometimes angled in favor of muslims.

I didn't mean in this recent case.

are you doing it on purpose or have you actually tried to understand?

I don't fucking care about who targets who or who does what with their freedom of speech

I'm no trying to be pc and telling what to criticize or not

after all if they wanna be assholes and drag people for what they believe in

if that's all they are good for I don't fucking care to be quite honest

but it's a fucking fact, they are being disrespectful

I mean look at their cartoons for yourself it's not satire

it's straight up insults and as someone pointed out before mockery

yes you can criticize religion as much as you want, but there's a way to do things and put things

their magazin makes me think af 10year olds who are trying to drag each others

without having any relevant argument

Charlie Hebdo disrespect christianity and jesus more than they do Islam. They have released far worse cartoons about jesus than they ever have about Islam/muslims

Did the Christians go and shoot them up? No. Are Charlie Hebdo under imminent attack from Christians? No. They under imminent attack from Muslims.

Charlie Hebdo mocks all religions and tragedies of the past but its funny how its only turned into an issue when it mocks islam/muslims.

please tell when in my comment I ever said that shooting was ok?

I litterally said that violence is never ok

and like I said before to me they are 10years olds

I don't like their style and I think they are disrespectful

whether they are making fun of muslims, christians or Stromae, I never read their magazing,

but we live in France they can say what they want

I really don't care about who they mock or not to me they are irrelevant no matter what they do

and nobody would have paid attention to them if they haven't been attacked in the first place

I agree that mockery just for the sake of mockery is wrong. But mockery is a way to create satire, which in turn can be used to create a debate about a topic. And those debates can certainly also include wether the satire in itself went too far.
