wtf I'm gonna have to check out that band because it's my type of music too lol

BLESS
i think my taste kind of varies but i mostly really enjoy that kind of old funky vibe, hence my wonder girls badge
suchmos sounds pretty cool, i love using spotify to find artists!!

Suchmos is part of a new group of bands that are inspired by city pop, but really have a R&B sound, with influences from jazz and hip hop. It's an evolution of the genre in Japan that opens it up to a new audience.

Others:

The Petrolz album from last year (look at the post below) could even be thrown in.

Shiina Ringo, Tokyo Jihen, and Petrolz

Yes, I got different "my type" of sounds, but I've found musicians who get it right. Yuki Kajiura when she leaves the generic anime shit behind and gets to write very baroque pop oriented songs, such as "I Swear", "Sayonara Solitia", "In my long forgotten cloistered sleep", etc or Kalafina songs she's made such as "Seventh Heaven", "Symphonia", "Hikari Furu", "Hikari No Senritsu", "Door", "Fairytale", "Kizuato", and some others.

And then I love me some mid/down tempo or very melodical rock songs such as some done by HYDE either alone, with L'Arc, or VAMPS.

And of course, the body breaking dance jams that are too many to list by vocal and instrumental artists/djs/producers.

Yay another Suchmos fan!!! Love & Vice and Mint Condition are two of my favorite releases of the year <3

OT but most of my K-Pop friends have given a good response to city pop when I've made them listen to it and I've been wondering why. Do you think it's a "Westernized" sound that's not found in K-Pop and that's why it's attractive or is it because it shares similarities with what is popular in K-Pop right now?

I don't think city pop sounds anything like KPop. It's a Western-inspired sound that hits a certain nostalgia for the 70s / 80s and summer.

It doesn't sound like k-pop but it has a retro vibe as you said and I've seen k-pop groups going retro now like Seventeen and Gfriend, that's why I was asking but yes sound wise they are very different. I guess it may just be a coincidence and me overanalyzing xD
