What is stopping K-Pop from breaking through mainstream globally?

Nearly every country in the world has a k-pop fandom, the only thing needed is for some of the artists to breakthrough mainstream

with the huge amount of fan support from the world, why is K-Pop not yet breaking through mainstream? Seriously bands like BTS I can totally imagine heaps of people who don't care about K-Pop digging their sound and choreo...

Well in America, it's the language thing that people will never get over plus racism. We like solo artists over groups. Also, I think the process of how kpop groups are made is too artificial for people.

Basically, kpop would have to lose all the things that make it kpop for it to succeed

As for the US, barely even British groups make it in the US and they speak the same language. The group who sang Glad You Came basically disbanded after signing with a US agency, and they at least had a hit song in the US to pull them in. Some do though, but they are rare.

At least K-pop has PSY. I know he is not the typical K-pop idol, but he is a household name now.

stereotype

language

Im sure there will be a group that will go viral! :)

They don't sing in english.

Okay I feel I've phrased my question wrong.

Of course I'm assuming them doing K-Pop but in English. I wonder why no American labels are approaching any groups yet.

If you look at latin singer mvs on youtube, some of them have over 1 billion views, indicating a large fandom, and yet i've never heard of them until i discovered the videos..

Yes

But a good Latin artists have crossed over to mainstream while K-Pop has...PSY, whose style isn't very indicative of the actual K-Pop scene (I'm not saying the Korean music scene, I'm specifically stating K-Pop)

She's massive in Asia tbh.

Let me tell you something, I'll give a real life example I've experienced:

So there's someone from my family who wanted to watch Drake's music video of Hotline Bling on our TV.

Earlier the same day, I watched on the same TV The 7th Sense Performance version by NCT U.

It was in the Watch Again category and I guess this someone from my family just clicked on it cause they thought it was Hotline Bling.

They enjoyed the song and the dancing very much, thinking they are listening to Hotline Bling(LOL), but after like 2 minutes I heard it and asked why do they listen to this, and they said they heard it on the radio and that it was Drake's song.

I told them it is not Drake, it's a korean boy band I like.

As soon as I said that, they turned it off.

It came way longer than I thought it would lol, but you get my point?

The only thing stopping it from going mainstream is literally prejudice thinking, that is all.

If The 7th Sense was really by Drake or maybe any other american act, not only this family member would've liked it, but it'll probably be a real hit in the mainstream scene.

He is still something though, better than anyone. There isn't much K-pop can offer to Western music industry, K-pop actually follows Western music trends. Maybe Japan has better chances since they are more innovative and diverse musically, though I'd say Japanese acts fare better in Europe rather than North America.

compared with Avril Lavigne, is she more liked? what's her star power compared to AKB48, Perfume, or BoA

& what about my girl Ariana Grande!¡!¡!

It's hard to compare domestic acts to foreign acts, but she is bigger than BoA currently. She's definitely much bigger than Ariana. And it's hard to compare her to Avril since they operate in completely different decades. The industry is so much different. But honestly, she's probably just as big as Avril was (she's over now).
