For all A.R.M.Y. out there... this one is a nice article about the boys... It's a quality and objective look at the boys' talents.

Bangtan Boys' Potential for Greateness and What Could Hinder It

Most Kpop boybands and girlgroups are mere products of brilliant marketing but has no artistic talent except for stage performance. However, everyone knows that the minimum requirement to be considered a real artist is to create your own material. That’s why Kpop is frowned upon by many critics. It is so full of celebrities shaped by marketing. They are products that are packaged and thrown an image that fulfill the fantasies of young people… like old Disney fairytales and Nicholas Sparks novels.

Once in a while, however, someone emerges from the rubble and it gives me some hope that people will finally realize that Korea isn’t just about artificially colored hair, grinding hips, barely there outfits and illusions of virginity and purity.

Bangtan Boys is one such emergence. When I first saw their We Are Bulletproof dance practice, I saw some things I didn’t see in other idol groups and as I watch them more, I realize that they do have real potential to become great idols and great artists.

They Create Their Own Materials and More

  • It’s not just about them writing and producing their own materials. There are a number of idols that create their own materials. There’s Big Bang, JYJ, Jay Park and several more. What sets Bangtang Boys apart is the quality of their sound. They do write pop but there is some semblance of hiphop in there and IF they evolve the right way
  •
  • They write DIFFERENT materials. Their songs actually sound distinct from each other. Other boybands, although they create their own materials, are so similar that you can actually take the lyrics of one of their songs and put it one of their other melodies and it will still work.
  •
  • Not everything is about love. There is nothing wrong with writing about love but when 90 percent of the materials a boyband creates is about love, it gets a little jarring. Bangtang Boys, with little life experience they have, has enough maturity to draw out reflections on their life experiences. It may sound juvenile to some but relevant to their age group.

Am I the only one who really doesn't give a single crap about their 'questionable' actions? Every single thing from that list looks like something put together by some SJW with nothing to be offended by for the day. Only thing I can concede to is Rapmon imitating black stereotypes when he talks/raps sometimes, and that's strictly because i find it annoying; I never saw the appeal at all.

there are valid items on the list but most are undoubtedly $tup!d

the n-word is valid. that word should never be used.

but these:

-Had dreads (huh? it's his hair. it's no one else's business. what's wrong with dreads)
-Said that “when it comes to pretty girls, there’s no racism†but also said that his ideal girl would have pale skin (i like women girls with tan skin. that doesn't make me racist. it's just what i like. it doesn't mean i find girls with white skin ugly, i just like a tan skin)
-Said that his ideal type of girl would have white skin on Idols’ True Color radio (as above)
-Said in Haru Hana that his ideal type would have fair skin and a healthy body (what's wrong with wanting someone who is healthy? should we all go for someone who is sickly?)
- Boy in Luv contributes to rape culture (if that's the case 95% of Kpop vides contribute to rape culture, abuse and prostitution. also, let us not forget, Music videos are meant to tell a story, not teach moral lessons)

nope, i don't think the makers of the list was trying to be objective, just a hell bent on destroying the image of BTS.

BTS is, of course, not perfect but no one has the right to malign other people

Depending if the boys know what the n-word means, then it's not really 'questionable' in the sense of them being malicious, but more in the sense that they're just ignorant about it. I'm sure the boys know what it means now and why it shouldn't be used, but months ago before their time in America, you could clearly make a case that they might have not known what it actually meant and if they had some understanding of it, they obviously don't know how terrible the word is and how much history it has behind it, at least for international fans. And while I understand why some people would be disappointed with one of them using it, I also don't think it's fair for people to hate on an idol that may not really know better about certain terms and is just doing something he thinks is cool because a singer/actor/idol they may look up to/listen to/etc... has done the same thing. It also doesn't help that many international fans, especially American fans, seem to think that their history is so important that it's obviously taught in schools around the world, when it's not.

Many Koreans know nothing about American history, so things like the civil war or the civil rights' movement aren't even on their radars, so many have no idea that some of the racial slurs that they hear through movies/songs/etc..., thinking they're cool, actually have a long history behind them that make them something that should never be used. To them, they're just words that may have negative connotations behind them (possibly positive connotations depending on the media they most likely get it from), but most probably don't know how negative those connotations are. I'm not saying it's right, but more or less, people shouldn't automatically hate on an idol for using the n-word because most likely they don't know how terrible that word is and they're just using it because some character they saw in a movie said it. If they know what the word means and the history behind it and yet they still continue to use it, especially after someone has educated them on it, then yeah, condemn them all you want because by that point its warranted. But for them to just be ignorant on something that they don't really have a way of knowing, the hate isn't warranted in the least.

The list as a whole is pretty stupid and really shouldn't have been made. I don't see how making a list and basically outlining everything that they've said/did to show how 'awful' they are because they said they liked some certain features on a girl or how they said a word that they most likely have no background information on, except for the media they see/hear it through, is stupid. They boys may be ignorant to a few things, but everyone's ignorant to a few things, and I don't know how being ignorant automatically makes them questionable.

they are doing hiphop music. it is their responsibility to know where hiphop came from (Jamaica and African Americans). although music is universal, hiphop as a genre is a product of African American struggles. Hence, it is but expected to know the sensitivities of the culture. ignorance of the law is not an excuse. ignorance of history isn't an excuse either.

the boys should know what the N-word stands for and why it should never be used. they are all adult now. they should know better. i support BTS but no excuses on this one.

the rest of the list is just meant to malign the boys. if the writer is a BTS fan as he or she claims, then he or she is pretty *bleep*.

Okay, going by your thinking, should I hold you to the standard that you should know Korean history and all their struggles because you listen to k-pop? Because going by what you're saying, I should expect you to know some of their history and how it contributes to korean music and possibly the k-entertainment industry. So going by this thinking, then you could easily be just as bad as BTS if you do not know much about their culture or the struggles that they have had in the past. I'm not trying to be mean here, but with your logic, it's quite flimsy in the sense that most people from different countries do not know another country's history unless it has some relation to theirs, and just because you listen to a genre of music, that doesn't automatically mean you know the history/story/culture behind it. So yes, being ignorant is an excuse (not now it isn't for the guys, but before America, it totally can be), especially since it's only been recently that the boys actually had a chance to realize how awful the N-word is.

So my point in my post still stands, because before America, it was quite possible that they didn't know all the connotations behind the word and could have thought it was cool because the groups/artists they liked said it. And for most of them to not know English, to not have gone overseas before they went to America this year, or really had a chance to experience American culture, it is entirely possible that they didn't know. However, since they did go to America this year and actually had a chance to learn the history and culture behind the music that they promote and like, they most likely know that the N-word is an awful word and know why it shouldn't be said. So most of the points where a member of Bangtan has said the N-word in that Shit that Bangtan does post was before their time in America, so at that time, they could have truly been ignorant about the word and with most of the information that they had about hip-hop being second-hand knowledge, it is forgivable of them to have said that word. (It's not right, but it's forgivable because they probably didn't know better.) But if they are saying that word now, after being educated on it, then that is a problem. Because they actually should know better now because it's highly unlikely that they weren't educated about those words and a good portion of the history behind hip-hop during their time in America , but months ago before that time, it is entirely possible that that may have not been the case.

BTS is made up of 7 boys, all of whom are from Korea and are Korean and for you to automatically think that they must know about another country's/people's history/struggles because they like to listen to their music is not a valid reason. If this was the case, then anyone that listens to any type of genre of music should also know the history/culture behind it as well. And even if one attempts to learn the history behind a genre of music, that doesn't automatically mean they understand it or completely know what is going on, especially if most of the information that they find is second-hand knowledge that they end up finding on the internet or get from someone that they know, which may or may not be that reliable in the first place. That is a gray area and like most gray areas, there can be confusion and people can be ignorant on what they find out from these gray areas.

Yes, most of BTS are adults, but that doesn't automatically mean that they should know everything about the things that they like, especially if they do not have the means/resources to tell them important things that they should know and be able to convey those in a way that they can completely understand the connotations of those things.

Yes, i know the history. at least some of the important parts. I am half Korean. i was born and grew up in the US but my mother is 100% Korean. I respect Kpop, idols and flower boys. i respect the entertainment industry in general. i also happen to work in it. i am fan of BTS and a lot of other idols and Korean entertainers.

i don't know why that is even being questioned. i think i have made myself clear about that.

BTS, however, doesn't just listen to hiphop, they actually make money out of it. it is their job. i also happen to view BTS as an artist, unlike some in the entertainment industry that are just manufactured to become celebrities. BTS creates their own music, they take part in its production, conceptualization and finishing. that's part of why i admire the group. this is not to say i think they create the best one but i do consider the fact that they are young and are evolving. however, i do believe that they have the potential to become the best.

hiphop is art and also a part of African American identity, culture and history. they are already at an age when they are supposed to know that the least they could do for the genre is know about it. they are at the age when they are supposed to know that they should go beyond just going by what popular celebrities do and say. they have always had the opportunity to learn what the N-word is. they don't need to go to America to have the opportunity to know about hiphop or the N-word.

they don't need to know american history, that was never mentioned. i was talking about the N-word and what it stands for. that is intricate in hiphop. no, in their case, ignorance is not an excuse.

that being said, i never said they are bad people or stu*** or disrespectful or whatever, i am only saying they are wrong for using the N-word and that there is no excuse. not in their case. i never castigated them, just their use of the N-word.

This thread is to honor the Bangtan Boys and I don't want to lengthen the discussion further about BTS using the N-word. It is starting to become irrelevant to the growth of BTS and becoming a personal debate.

To @cunnian, please send a personal message if you want to make comments and clarifications about what i said. The other fans should be spared. to steer the discussion back to BTS...

here is an interesting post about idols that should collaborate. I will only paste only the parts that mention BTS:

There are idols out there who have real love for music and real talents just waiting to be tapped.

It is about time for these idols to come together and collaborate to use their talents and create beautiful music that will not only prove their worth as artists but also raise the bar of music in Korea.

#1 Classic-Contemporary Band
There are so many idols that play different instruments and it is about time to put together a band that will play a modern version of classic pieces or create a classic sounding contemporary music.

BTS' V on saxophone
Super Junior's Leeteuk on drums
Exo's Chanyeol on violin
Super Junior's Henry Lau on violin
Shinee's Jonghyun on Bass
DBSK's Changmin on guitar
Mblaq's Seungho on piano
Eric Nam on Cello

The result should be a fusion of classic sound with modern feel. It may be hard to imagine but here is a video of the band Apocalyptica, a four-piece band playing string instruments covering rock songs like those of Metallica.

#4 Taemin & Jungkook - Acoustic Modern Classic

Two of the most talented maknaes in the Kpop and it's time for their talents to come together.

Both rap, both dance and both should try their hand in writing their own songs.

It is a waste to do a mash up without having the two bust up some legendary dance steps and oh, man will it just look and sound great.

The thoughtfulness of their voices should be allowed to move with their bodies and what better way to do that than with a song that follows the tradition of Michael Jackson-like song. The template will be something like Man in the Mirror but it has to highlight their voices more. This should be similar to what these two dudes in the video below. However, it has to mixed with a hiphop number similar to what the legendary Jabbawockeez did in week 1 of America's Best Dance Crew (watch video below).

There is nothing wrong with taking photo of the memorial site. It is how they used the memorial site that offends people. Just because it was Big Hit that chose the location, doesn't exempt the boys from the responsibility. they could have told the management company about the sensitivity of the matter. Big Hit and BTS should apologize and people should understand that there was no malicious intent, just lack of preparation and knowledge.

That being said, it doesn't make BTS a bad group. They should take this as a learning experience. They are getting lots of attention because, believe me, the potential of this group is off the charts. When you have that kind of potential, there will be a lot of haters because BTS is a threat to other fandoms. it comes with the territory. they are starting to set the bar high on their craft and it will unintentionally highlight those that don't have real talent.

What BTS needs to do now is learn from it and move forward. I hope by now they are realizing the immense talent and potential they have and the responsibility, desired or otherwise, that comes with those talents and potential. I hope they step up and take this as a challenge. It's time they get a better understanding of things that affect and effect their music.

I have a question. I need ARMY's genius.

I saw in a tumblr account a quote where SUGA supposedly said "JIMIN IS MY BESTFRIEND IN BANGTAN."

I don't know how true that is. Can anyone here verify that? or is that a "fanfic"? I do know that Suga is very fond of Jimin just based on his actions but I don't know if he has ever been vocal about it.

These are my wishes for BTS this year:

1) Enter Billboard's Hot 100 (as expressed by the members themselves. I will write something up how ARMYs can make this happen)

2) A SOLO concert in Staples Center and Madison Square Garden

3) A solo release for EACH for the members hyping on their individual strengths, interest or secret talent to culminate in one full length album. Example:

- Suga to release an album where he will play different instruments for songs he wrote and produced because the guy, apparently, is multi instrumentalist

- Jimin's album where he will play the piano, draw the album art, write or co-write all lyrics

- Jungkook's rap album (because our maknae is one hell of a rapper)

- RM to collab with different rappers

- JHope's dance album where he will choreograph all songs

- Jin's ballad album

- V's out of this world album

4) BTS International Media Black Out (worldwide, simultaneously, release or play a BTS song across all media. For example, BIG HIT with ARMY will work together to release a song at 12midnight GMT. this will be played on major radio station, youtube, MTV channels, etc.)

5) Finally, for 7 boys to be given a chance to have a vacation in a country of their choice with their families for at least a week

For those curious. here is the ranking of different kpop-themed websites internationally and in the US.

Things to note

1) ranking changes daily

2) this measures the traffic on the homepage and not on every page of the site. that means it is highly possible that onehallyu.com/forum has more traffic than soompi.com/forum.

3) you can check it yourself through alexa.com, it is the internationally recognized most reliable website traffic tracking service. it is not perfect but the most reliable thus far.

4) it does not measure the amount of time people spend on the website. for example, IT IS POSSIBLE, that soompi has more people visiting it but people spend more time on onehallyu. that may be tracked but it will require a paid account.

There's not a lot of BTS covers I like simply because I don't think anyone can come close to how BTS can perform their songs but Sungha Jung is one of the VERY FEW i feel gives a BTS song justice.

can anyone confirmed, we really crack the top 200 billboard? what other kpop groups did this beside Psy (who was not a kpop group)?

Yes, they are in the Billboard 200 for the Special album.

Big Bang, Girl's Generation, EXO, TVXQ/DBSK, 2NE1, BoA, Taeyang, GD

Here is a good article for how to help BTS get to Billboard Hot 100 which they personally and directly said they want to achieve.

This is unconfirmed as of yet but I believe they are the only Korean band that broke Billboard 200 for two separate materials. Let me do some digging and i'll let you guys know

UPDATE:

For Billboard 200 (for albums)

  • GD entered Hot 200 twice - Coup d'Etat and One of a Kind
  • Girl's Generation entered Hot 200 for Mr.Mr. but their subgroup TaeTiSeo entered it with Twinkle

For Hot 100 (for singles)

  • Psy has been in there four times
  • Wonder Girls once for Nobody

So if we talk AS A COMPLETE UNIT, BTS is the only Korean group that entered Billboard 200 with two different albums
