Story Time: I went to a bar with a group of students from my engineering course on Friday and it was karaoke night. I was sitting on the sofa and a group of guys (5) were sitting at the end of the couch and were discussing if they were going to sing that night. One of the guys all of a sudden says, "We can all go and sing together, guys, and since there's five of us, we can make a boy band. OMG, we can be the next BTS!?" One of his friends then started singing "Mahni, Mahni, Mahni" and the other 4 joined in.
Do you know how shocked I was that a group of American college guys (ages 19-21) knew who BTS was and even sang a part from Blood, Seat and Tears?? I'm not even making this up. By the way, we're studying abroad in Germany so that's why a group of 19-21 year old American students were at a bar. Just to clear up some confusion, lol.
Also, when I was helping my friend choose a song for her to sing that night on the Karaoke App, I noticed there were a very limited amount of K-Pop songs (only 12), and 1/3 of songs were from BTS and 1/6 songs belonged to PSY. The other 6 songs were from 6 other groups. Here were the list of songs if you're interested:
I asked my friend since she's Korean-American, "I wonder why most of the songs belong to BTS" and she said, "Well, it's no brainer that BTS is the most popular group in the world. Other K-pop groups aren't nearly as popular as them from what I've seen." She's not a fan by the way, but a dedicated VIP and MooMoo. To be honest, I was quite touched that she said that since I don't bring BTS up to her because I've noticed that she's not the biggest fan of them, if you know what I mean. She doesn't hate them because she does listens to them, but it's most likely that she got tired of hearing about them at our university back home in the USA.
Sorry for the long post!!
