About this fuss over SM Rookies. SM Rookies = Johnny's Junior [UPDATED] with info about SM rookies imo.

Recommended Posts

I'm not defending nor hating SM Rookies and Its not even about the "everyone hates sm " thing. Its about the fact that many of us are just creeped out by how young most of them are that SME decided to expose them to the public. Although I am a fan of most groups from SM and I'm not hating SM, I must admit seeing those young kids sorta hold me back from looking forward to SM Rookies. I don't hate them, but it just giving me this weird different feeling/vibe.

HOWEVER, THIS IS WHAT SM EXPLAINED ABOUT SMROOKIES:

SMROOKIES Explained [MUST READ]

SMROOKIES is a pre-debut team of trainees currently practicing under SM Entertainment.

SMROOKIES will introduce SM’s new “Co-Creation†system. Fans will be able to participate in preliminary events and showcases before the official debut. The rookies will have the freedom to form different groups with each other, and show their day-to-day lives and practices to their fans. These rookies will also participate in concert and variety shows to win the hearts of fans. We can also expect covers of songs by their company’s seniors and their own originally composed songs in open performances to showcase their talents.

According to SM Entertainment on December 3, SM Rookies is a new star-in-the-making brand that will highlight the pre-debut team of SM trainees.

The agency announced that it plans on unveiling more and more about these rookies so that the audience can get familiar with the rookies as they work toward becoming a star.

Ahead of their official debut, the rookies will be releasing songs and participating in a variety of activities.

-->However, let me tell you that this SM Rookies thing is not really something out of ordinary in Asia. Its really nothing new. SM is not the first one attempting something like this. Most us kpop fans are just not familiar nor used to seeing this kind of thing where young kids are being exposed and revealed to the public eye like that before they make their official debut.

  • In Japan, Johnny's Ent. has done this way before. Have you guys seen or even heard of Johnny's Jr. (Johnny's Jimusho)? That is where plenty of young JE groups were formed. Johnny's Jr. are young JE trainees but they were already being exposed to the public and JE fans before they get to debut in a group.
  •
  • " Johnny's Jr. consist of boys from age 10-20 (from different sources, I heard 8-16 yrs old :derp: wtf ). When one turn 20 (or 18), he will graduate from junior, probably having his debut as boyband, duo, band... who knows what on Mr. (Johnny) kitagawa's head. SMAP, Tokio, Kinky Kids, V6, Arashi, Tackey&Tsubasa (and many more) are groups/duo that graduated from Jr. They sometimes would have some Juniors as background dancers in their stage performances. Juniors sing the songs from those groups. They have their own songs, but not allowed to release em as single. Juniors are also divided into subgroups (Kat-tun, Five, Musical Academy etc). "

Look at how young  and tiny Yamapi, Arashi, News, etc. were back then when they were Johnny's Juniors. They were basically kids.

  • H!P (Hello! project - home to Morning Musume, Berryz Koubou, C-ute, Smileage, etc.) managed by Tsunku, have something similar in which they called their ver. of J's Jr. and SM rookies, as H!P egg.
  • I believe AKB48's company have something similar to this too. They are called research students. (cr: d-artist)
  •
  • LDH have something similar too if I'm not mistaken. I assume its these kids:
(omg look how young and talented dancers they are).

Based on those examples, I assume that is how SM will probably manage them as a project before officially debut them in groups, or duo or solo. This SM Rookies is a project to expose them to the public before official debut.

I agreed with K-nets when they mentioned in an SM Rookies article that SM Rookies seem likely to be no different from Johnny's Jr. I think that SME modeled SM Rookies after Johnny's Jr. and H!P egg. ( LSM getting inspiration from Johnny Kitagawa? :derp: Most likely. I even heard from somewhere that LSM and Johnny Kitagawa are good friends and always exchange good business idea. But don't take my word for it).

You may possibly feel creep out by those young 10 yr olds SM rookies but that is exactly how big named Japanese idol groups like Arashi, KAT-TUN, NEWS, SMAP, etc started out as. One of those SM Rookies kids might even possibly be Korea's ver./future Yamapi, or even Takuya Kimura.  lol jk jk  /prepared get killed by JE fangirls -_- ....but hey you may never know.... SM seem to know what they're doing. I mean, look at EXO.

This system seems to be successful in Japan. JE have produced the most successful male idol groups since the 70s with the biggest fanbase and they are the leading male idols agency in Japan. SME without a doubt seem to take inspiration from them. But I'm just not sure how successful this system will turn out in Korea.

Agree? Disagree?
Do you also think this is how SM will manage them? If so, how do you feel if SM Rookies is like Johnny's Juniors? Or do you rather hope not? Happy or unhappy with this?
Feel free to state any opinions.

To those who are familiar with Johnny's Junior, if I provide the wrong info, please feel free to correct me.

The difference being Johnny Jrs. and AKB48's research girls actually perform regularly at theaters and concerts gaining some.....whereas SMrookies are just taking "cute" pictures and showing mediocore dancing to gain hype (for now)

but eh lets let sm be sm

AKB's trainees are called research students.

And if anyone is curious this is the YT channel for Hello Project's trainees:

But this is what it basically is. Korea knows that too.

I don't just get why companies expose their young trainees when they want to debut them years later. Wouldn't that just kill the hype? With EXO they revealed teasers few months before their actual debut, that didn't kill the hype as much. Beside what if the young trainees suddenly decide they don't want to debut under a company anymore? Their faces are already known and the 'promotion' went down the drain

It's not like SM is going through that much trouble to promote them to begin with.

i mean everyone checks the pictures for how they look

but when there's too many you start to forget... also sm people all look the same with surgery

i think this is more to sign the rookies long term at a young age so they don't runaway to other agencies.

is anyone watching kpop star? SM is probably hating they didn't join this season... that korean X spanish mixed girl is very their "type"

i find it creepy in the mold-a-star sense... i find it normal in the entertainment sense because they do that in a lot of countries. imo i think they prefer younger talented people or just younger people because they're easiest to train (even if they're not very good). they do say a child's brain is like a sponge...

THIS.

People are already complaining when SM didn't even finish introducing them all or tell what exactly they are doing with SMRookies.

I think that SME gets indeed its inspiration both from how AKB48's company or Johnny do things and from YG's show WIN. It's no coincidence that SME started its SM Rookies project only a few months after the WIN show.

From what I've seen so far, SME will implement their own version of such an exposure program, having elements of both YG's WIN show as well as the Japanese music company programs, but not limited to them.

The difference between Johnny's Jr. and SM "Rookies" are that JE's Jr.s gets experience from early on and at certain time they debut.

Which is exactly why they revealed these young SMRookies kids as early as 10 y.o.  for them to gain experience from early on before making their official debut. There's actually not much difference.

I heard some of these SMRookies have already perform as an opening act or back up dancers at SMtown Week Concerts. similar to what the Johnny's Juniors have done in their seniors' concerts.

Here is what SME explained about SM Rookies and what they'll be doing:

Johnny's Jr. members are very active compared to SM rookies (uptil now anyway). They've done dramas and stuff. Not just appeared as backup dancers in concerts. I don't know much about Johnny Jr. but I've seen the kids in a few dramas and they're divided into unofficial groups. They've even had their own 12 episode drama and a movie with the AkB youngins.

If this is being compared to the AKB system, then AKB trainees too have their own performances in the theaters and at concerts. They appear in singles and sometimes up and front. 48 family kks have even had their own solo concert.

Ofc SM rookies could potentially turn into the J-idol system (considering the description) but I have yet to see that.

This SMRookies thing have only just begun. Its still in the beginning stage and still to early to tell anyway.

It has only been 2 weeks since SM first introduced them.

I bet some of them will eventually start their activities in variety shows, dramas (as extras or something), as back up dancers, etc. Its exactly why Sm started this SMRookies in the first to give them exposure early on. Maybe some of them have had some exposure in dramas, cfs, modelling, featured in songs, etc.you never know.

Ok nevermind. I didn't read that part. Yeah they are similar. Wonder what Korean fans reaction to this... Probably they're say Ilbe or something like that.
