You're downloading a torrent and it turns out to be this. What do you do??

You're downloading what you think is a torrent for an expensive computer program you need for school but can't afford, or for a video game (or anything else), and as you open it, you see that it is actually child porn or a snuff film. What do you do?? Do you delete it from your computer and continue as if it never happened?? Do you report it to the corresponding authorities(FBI, for example) knowing that there is a chance that you might get in trouble for downloading copyrighted material?? Or do you do something else??

As troublesome as it may sound, I would strongly suggest that you make a report to the authorities, for your own self-protection. 

 

It's understandable if you just want to delete everything and pray that there's no trace left behind of what you've downloaded.  But the link from the source still remains, and forensic computer analysis nowadays can retrieve that which has been deleted from your hard drive. Imagine if, months or years down the line, the FBI busts the child porn/snuff film syndicate and starts tracing all the IP addresses of those who did the downloading.  If and when they then come knocking on your door, that police report you made will come in real handy to explain what you did.

 

Not saying that'll ever happen for sure, but better be safe than sorry.
