Who is the easiest act to stan in Japanese music today?

People often ask about getting into Japanese music, and people always suggest their faves. This isn't about that. It's about who is the easiest to get wrapped up in, as far as like availability of music / videos, frequency of releases, translated material, social media, and whatnot.

I don't follow Japanese music closely (I listen to a lot of Japanese music but I don't know what's mainstream) but I always see Perfume fans more than anything so maybe them.

inb4 people don't read the OP's post and start suggesting their faves

I feel like 48s because they have so many groups/subunits/solos that are constantly releasing material not to mention they have stuff like elections and stuff to get people interested. Also, since they have so many members that are involved in dramas, variety, and everything else, there is always something to talk about. And they have lots of translators, so all their shows are almost always immediately translated.

Maaya Uchida. Her stuff dont get translated though. It would be great if Jpop international fandom was more active on forums because then it would be easier for international fans to keep track of those things...

46/48 groups or idols in general. There's a ton of music released. A single from one of those groups is basically an album if you include the tracks from the different versions. There's dramas and variety shows that they are on which are usually translated. A lot of pictures and photoshoots are available. I'd assume they have twitters, facebooks, instagrams, etc also. All of this makes it easy to get attached and find a favorite or bias if you're the sort of person to do that.

There are actually fandoms and online communities. There are english sites and forums just for idols. I don't think fandoms exist for non-idols or they are not as common.

Basically they are accessible with a lot of things for fans to consume.

I think acts with already established fandoms like ONE OK ROCK, BABYMETAL, Perfume, LDH and 48G.

This is basically it. They all have youtube channels and the music is available on iTunes worldwide. They're also quite representative of what's hot today in Japan.

I'd also add lesser known acts like  AKLO, KOHH and others if you're into urban music or acts like Suiyoubi no Campanella for alternative pop fans.

Hahaha, that's true, actually!

Well, I guess your already existing tastes serve as gateway acts to become a fan of certain J-music acts. That, and the buzz (sometimes mediaplay) one could get: Either AKB48 doing a song for a Disney film (Sugar Rush for Wreck-It Ralph) or Babymetal angering chauvinist metal music fans, and clever community management (Miyavi or Ladybaby come to mind).

For example, the anime/videogame fans will flock to TM Revolution, Kumi Koda, YUI, Do as Infinity, etc. (basically anison artists and those who do a one anime/videogame song which becomes enough popular to sustain an international fandom) because anime/videogames mean availability, and music videos and releases will be ready for those fans to get (as easy as the anime/videogames they consume).

In short, I guess the easiest acts to stan are those whose artistic works can be easily found (albeit a lack of translations of their variety show appearances, etc.), which acknowledge the existence of a non-Japanese fanbase (to a certain extent),  and which are not very alienating in terms of sound, availability and fandom personality.

I am going to be biased here and go with Ayumi Hamasaki for the following reasons (although these could also apply to Kumi):

  • Yearly album releases (and some years you get a mini album or remix album!)
  • Twitter/Facebook/Instagram presence with some posts in English/acknowledges overseas fanbase
  • Discography on iTunes
  • Youtube channel with her full PVs on Avex's channel (although her recent PVs are only available in the short version)
  • Frequent concerts - arena tour, A-Nation & CDL (plus TA Tour this year)

I do find that I tend to listen to artists more when they release something new so with the likes of Kumi and Ayumi I probably do listen to them more and therefore "stan" more?
