SM's 10 years long contract? WTF? Does that mean...

It's not an "SM" thing  It's a pretty standard contract for most kpop agencies - 7 years (domestic) + 3 years (if you promote internationally).

Ofcourse it's ridiculous but people forget that these idols are not forced to sign these contracts but they want to be celebrities and pursue their dreams so they do it willingly.

I'm not sure about music industry contracts in the US - but in TV it's kind of similar. Like the majority of network shows have 7 year contracts (for the principal cast) - so even if you hate it and want to leave you have to stick with it or pray to get killed off.

Trainee investment -> Long term contract reminds me of how governments sponsor students to study abroad but they have to come back and work for the country for at least double the amount of time they study or 10 years in some cases.

i think contracts for boygroups are different than the ones for girlgroups. Because of the military service, a member of suju (i don't remember who) said during an interview that sm is freezing their contracts, and the company doesn't loose the time in the service under the time of contract. For example, it means to work 12 years for SM, 10 years of normal contract + 2 years transparent for the military service.
