What did Mamamoo have that SPICA didnt?

I prefer Spica but I think Mamamoo has the better overall vocal average. Mamamoo's company knows how to handle their promotions, and Mamamoo themselves know how to connect with their fanbase. Spica disappears for too long in between promotions. They can't afford that when they're not popular. While Spica is gone, five thousand other newer, younger groups debuted.

I think timing and a more personal touch with the fanbase (a lot of activity on youtube and v app to keep interest). I think as well them showing a bit more personality on stage helped but that's a management decision for image more than the girls themselves.

probs as others said just different management tbh and rules. I don't mind spica but their songs don't stand out to me compared to mamamoo but that's a personal preference as there are plenty that feel mamamoo are boring in contrast so who really knows?

I was actually into SPICA from the very beginning -- debut and all. Which is why when Mamamoo debuted I thought they would fade into oblivion just like SPICA did, as the two groups were so similar in terms of being a 'vocal/performance' group.

Honestly I was pleasantly surprised by Mamamoo's success. I think the three factors are luck, timing and promotion.

Mamamoo were promoted better in terms of a brand.

Their songs all have that jazz-inspired/retro sort of theme which means its cohesive and heightens their overall recognisability.

Their personalities and group dynamic are presented as fun-loving and beagle-like, meaning more opportunities for variety shows and public exposure. This image also sort of determined how they would interact with their fanbase (ie being close, innovative tactics)

The members also debuted at a younger age compared to SPICA.

Luck. Also now most SPICA members are mid-late 20s. Koreans/fans are fickled; they idolize youth. But Boa and Bohyung' voices are better than Mamamoo. But there is a great range in vocal strength in SPICA while Mamamoo has less members/more concentrated vocals. But the largest reason is luck. Luck plays a huge factor in who gains popularity.

A smart company

^ Mamamoo's company basically worked out a series of concepts fittied around the girls' personalities, which made their songs their own. Plus their naturally outgoing and interactive personality really kept the fandom going - I heard they let their fans design their stage outfits, for one. Such things makes the fans feel appreciated, and keep them dedicated with ample activities. Besides, Mamamoo didn't strike it big at first, it was with each comeback that fans get to see and know them better.

It's a shame about SPICA though. Everyone, even the general k-netz seem to think of SPICA as underrated, yet few were actual fans that support or are dedicated to the group. Another thing is probably the fact that they're a 'older' group, sadly. Unless you've been active for several years with a solid fandom, older groups aren't as well-received as their younger peers. Perhaps if SPICA opened up more platforms for them to perform in the indie sphere it could have made things a bit different, but with their current marketing it doesn't seem to be hitting the right audience.

A good company with great understanding of how the industry works, good group dynamic, good interactions between the members and the fans, also members seemed to have a bit more freedom and participation in the building of their career and of course a lot of luck.
