Kris and Liu Yifei's Never Gone

What do y'all think about the movie? This is only my personal opinion. I am not a hater, but neither do I feel like sugarcoating.

I think it's substandard. I'd give it a 5.5 if I'm being nice. People should stop bashing WYF's acting so much. Liu Yifei is not any better. Both of their acting skills are not horrible, but they're substandard as fuck. At times LYF can't seem to be able to get into her character. It's very obvious that she's just "acting". WYF sometimes exaggerate his actions and I cringe.

The storyline seems like something you take out of asianfanfics. I should really stop overusing the term 'substandard' here, but that's the word that I repeatedly chanted in my head as I watched the film.

It's still better than WYF's previous films Somewhere Only We Know and Mr. Six. The former angered me so much, because it was such a fucking time waster. That's only in terms of engagement. Acting skills wise, both films beat this hands down. Anyway I still got distracted at times while watching this film.

Their substandard acting skills wouldn't be magnified if the script was better written. The whole movie was just very meh, and frequently cringe worthy.

What are your opinions? Again, I'd like to emphasize that this is just the opinion of a viewer. If many viewers found it awesome, then cool. But that doesn't mean that my opinion is "wrong", or that I'm bullshitting.

Waste of time. I didn't know the plot is gonna be that weak before I started. Like I understand it's YA, youth drama or whatever you wanna call it, so mb if the acting was like Oscar-level and editing was better this horrid story could have been saved, but neither Yifei, nor Yifan are great actors, so it's just overall tragic. 3/10 if I am to be generous here.

I haven't watched it yet, but it just looks like the mainland version of Our Times.

Lol yes I wanted to point that out, but I felt like it'd seem like I want to "drag Our Times down". Tbh the theme is very similar. Something about high school lovers who couldn't be together tragic tragic blah blah but they met at university then met when adults blah

Your opinion is welcome and it's actually nice to have civil discussions about this!

I do agree about Liu Yifei's acting. She was actually the one who really stood out to me like a sore thumb tbh because during the emotion-heavy parts of the movie, she didn't really give me anything. The first half of the movie was saved by Kris and Liu Yifei's natural chemistry together and they had tons of cute moments that made me, to use a Filipino term, kilig. I think they both acted being in love really well and the highschool scenes were so refreshing and fun. It's the second half of the movie that really detracts from the entire thing because the editing was sloppy and they made the leads go from 0-100 real quick. It's one extreme to another and it gave me, and the viewers, whiplash.

I do think I and several others would like the movie more if the ending wasn't so crappy though. Most audiences want a payoff for all the angst and we didn't get that. Instead they left it open ended which, meh, who wants that.

Lol no actor could save this script and editing. You've always been extremely biased against Kris tbh so not really sure if your comment comes from being objective but anyway, to quote Katy Perry, time is the ultimate truth-teller. Kris is going to show what he's capable of in a better movie and script.

i need to know if this is better than sowk or not because no matter how i tried to like sowk, i couldn't bring myself to like it. only the cinematography saved that movie like damn, why would anyone waste all that money to make a plotless movie...

i hope this one's better, i've read the a half part of the novel so yeah i'm hoping

It's more entertaining for me than SOWK because the pairing in this movie actually makes sense and they're cute together lol.

If I'm being nice I'd give it a 5/10. As much as I love the main leads, their actings aren't solid enough to carry the bad movie direction. I guess what goes wrong is Chinese movie direction these days. Movies are produced by mainland now and plots are taken from online novels, which I find most are low quality. There's a difference between novels and movies. While characters in novels are able to be appropriately developed through heavy descriptions, it just doesn't work for movies due to the limited time span. This movie is just very substandard and bland like any other novel adapted movies that mainland has produced over the past years. I just can't stand them especially ones that incorporated voice-over narration; I find it super unnecessary. You're supposed to show the characters' feelings through their actions not a low-tone melodramatic narration.

Onto the acting, I can admit as a fan, LYF has not improved for years and i'm disappointed. I'd given her countless chances to prove her improvement but what I got back every time was disappointment. I didn't even put much expectation before I watched this and this movie still managed to fail my expectation. She's just sooo one-dimensional! It has nothing to do with her aura. Yes, her aura is too ethereal for versatile characters but if you're a good actress, you can definitely camouflage it well. Yes, she played a suppressed, low-key girl well but I don't see any difference with her acting here as the one in Night Peacock. As for Kris, while I was watching the trailers I thought he was great perhaps because of how the trailers were edited to intensify the plots. But the dynamics of the movie was wayyyy more draggy, which made his acting stood out as overacting. It didn't help that LYF was way underacting as his counterpart. It felt like the two weren't acting with each other. It was like LYF played her part and Kris played his part and were put next to each other. I believe if their actings were to be put in a more theatrical directed movie, it would have been more bearable and fitting. The supporting actors are okay, a bit better than the leads, but not enough memorable to salvage the movie.

When I watch something I tend to pay attention to the direction foremost and then the acting. I thought it was going to be a rom-com at first due to the trailers, hence, it disappointed me when there wasn't enough comedy.

Not gonna argue. But I mean that better execution could have made some things more dramatic and touching because it's like teenage angst, you know, and they're all like in love and suffering, so this particular aspect could have been more pronounced, but it fell flat.

And please stop labeling everyone who does not sing praises to Kris as 'hater". I think I'm very objective towards him and this movie (also I can count times I talked about him here on one hand but it's irrelevant), if he was passable in the first part, I said so before. I don't feel the need to make countless posts about it though.

And yeah, hope Sweet 16 is better.

I'm not labeling you a hater but it's just weird that during the few times you do talk about him, it's to criticize him (I've also seen your comments about him in the bashing thread). But you are free to give your opinion about him and the movie.

I think he was more than passable in the first part. He played cute and charming well. His comedic timing is also great. But again, difference in opinions.

I'm watching his acting progress, so I'm commenting on that mostly.

And I read your rendering of the novel in the other thread, characters' actions make much more sense if that how it is supposed to be, and it's too bad none of that got translated into the movie.

Definitely better than SOWK. My exact sentiments. I couldn't fucking stand that movie. But acting wise, SOWK is better.

If that's the case, it should be good since Our Times did so well. That movie made me cry every single time I watch it.

I love Our Times so much too T.T I felt like crying when he got beaten up. Nope. Our Times had much better acting skills. Both LYF and WYF's acting were bad. The former was underwhelming and the latter was overwhelming. The script is cringe af too. Their intimate scenes were bad too. I've never cringed so much while watching a movie.

Wow, just because I felt their intimate scenes were bad. I am exaggerating? Maybe you find it good. (Do you?) but I found it awkward most of the time. Especially when they were kissing outside the temple. Their (almost) bed scene was cringe because of the script IMO. But as for the temple scene, it boils down to the actors as well, no? The other tolerable kiss scene was at the stairs when LYF left him.

You do realize the scene at the temple was supposed to make you cringe? It was a forced kiss. It was meant to be awkward and uncomfortable. The kissing scene at the bed was fine (and even good). This is honestly just so nitpicky.

You don't seem to have any kind of agenda and it seems like you're trying to be objective but are you sure you're not being biased? Have you made any threads before where you were commenting on a movie negatively and trashing its actors? Do you not think you're being a tad too harsh in your comments?

No, this is the very first thread I've made for a movie.

I am not trying too hard to be objective. I am just posting my opinions which happens to not be a positive one. Biased? Towards what? Against what? Why was it supposed to make me cringe?

*force kiss* "Don't do this. The Buddha is watching." "Then does the Buddha know how much my heart is hurting?!" (Based on my memory. Not gonna be 100% accurate.) It seems more like the scriptwriter was trying to be romantic than make us cringe, no? WYF's lines were actually romantic. But that temple scene wasn't delivered well IMO.

Too harsh? I'm not trying to insult or hate anyone. I literally just posted my unfiltered opinion without sugarcoating.

Our Times is already a tearjerking movie. And whenever I watch Hebe's Little Happiness MV, I feel like crying more.

I saw your Hebe badge. Did you already saw her new MV? That song sounds good!

Can't be helped. I'm quite emotionless by nature D: I laughed so hard when my friend cried. The aunties sitting near us thought I was crying and they said I'm pitiful. They actually said that D: !!!!

Yes. I like the song. It sounds good and the lyrics are great. The MV is beautiful as well. I like the message they're delivering, because I really need some positivity in my life lmao. But I actually prefer her "darker" songs like angel devil. But that's just me lol. (Idk how to put spoiler because I'm on mobile T.T)

A forced kiss, no matter the context, is going to make you cringe. Find me a forced kiss that won't make you cringe. I will wait.

If you truly just wanted to give your opinion about the movie then there are several negative threads about the movie already that you could have commented on. In fact, you already commented on several of them saying the same things you said in your OP.

And now I saw that you just commented in another thread where a poster is saying they liked the movie because of their own experiences and you're criticizing them for it. It's looking more and more like you like talking about this movie and how "horrible" the actors were and you're just adding into the whole hate train and jumping on the bandwagon. So much for not being biased.

Yes! I like her dark and depressing songs of her than the lively ones. Even the Better Rival and Contradiction are good! Even the MVs are so amazing.

I don't believe all forced kiss will just make u cringe. (And u said no matter the context, will make us cringe) Are there not forced kisses that makes u angry? In many many dramas, the female antagonist will forcibly kiss the male lead when she sees the female lead nearing them. This causes the female lead to misunderstand. Don't most ppl get pissed off instead? This is just an example anyway.

"Several (negative) threads" lol idk where they're but I'll admit I've seen 3 up till now. And before I created this thread I only saw 1? I created this thread right after I watched the movie. The other thread I posted on recently was still created after I created mine, no? The other other thread about this movie, I commented ages ago and at that time ppl only talked about the trailer and anticipation I was talking about after watching the movie. No, I didn't comment the same thing I said at all. My post was much shorter and that was before I even watched the movie. There was no way I could have such a long comment.

And no, the poster didn't say (s)he liked the movie because of his/her experience. She clearly said we wouldn't understand unless we were this that, or had similar experience. I wasn't even criticizing. I said that I disagreed, but I also clearly stated that I respected his/her opinion. Then I went on to explain why I disagreed. I mentioned the experience thingy because I felt uncomfortable that the poster may have insinuated that we could only understand if we had similar experience and I disagreed and went on to explain why I disagreed.

Yes, I truly want to give my opinion. But not only that. I want to know how others felt. I want to have a legit discussion about why they like/dislike certain parts. Where they felt sucked. Which part they actually enjoyed. How they feel the movie could've been done better. Things like that. I want to know opinions. If I disagree, I want to be able to say it as well. I want to tell them why I disagree and have them explain so I can better understand their pov. If they disagree with mine, I can explain to them as well. I want to discuss conflicting opinions without being treated like I'm some hardcore WYF hater or something. I want to be allowed to have my damn negative opinion, and if they wanna, they can always tell me why they disagree w my opinion. I don't tell them I disagree w their opinion to shut them up and make my negative opinion seem "more objective" or something. I tell them I disagree so they can explain further and I'll learn to appreciate and understand too, no? I mean, if they explain their pov in a civilized manner, it's highly probable I'd end up thinking, 'ahh fuck so it's like this? How could I have missed that out?' U know what I mean...I suck at explaining myself blah.

Cringey/uncomfortable/angry, THESE ARE ALL NEGATIVE EMOTIONS. The point is, unless they're one of those people who like domination in fiction, forced kisses will always bring a negative reaction to its viewers. They're not gonna swoon because it's romantic. It's always going to be uncomfortable. Again, point me to an example of a forced kiss that gives you a positive feeling. I will wait.

Their sweet scenes were more than fine. Again, you're being too harsh.

You are just dragging this out. Why waste time on something you dislike heavily and keep reiterating about how much you dislike it and how horrible the actors were? You say you want discussion but you keep shooting down comments that give a different perspective. It seems Kris is just never going to please you as you have given negative comments about all the movies Kris has been in, even the most critically acclaimed movie of 2015 so you can't say it's because of quality while on the same breath you keep praising all other movies (lol).

You yourself might not be able to realize you have a bias against him.
