The area is rich in minerals and also an area for fishing and trade hence the dispute. A recent ruling gave ownership to the Philippines yet the Chinese government will not acknowledge this and many Chinese insist the area is part of China (though an objective look at a map makes this claim pretty quesfionable). Chinese idols including Vic have posted a picture on their sns supporting China's view that the area is in fact China's despite the ruling.
