ArticleHas IOI's image been overexposed... the concerns of project groups

Source: Ilgan Sports via Naver

1. [+2,083, -100] In my opinion, Gugudan's failure has nothing to do with IOI's image but rather inner issues within Gugudan. It's a combination of their concept, outfits, choreography, etc.

2. [+2,573, -71] Gugudan's song is just bad, the members being overexposed with IOI is not the issue

3. [+1,142, -57] If you have a good song, everything else doesn't matter

4. [+323, -31] It's obvious that Gugudan's debut was rushed. DIA's comeback was planned so nothing's awkward about it but Gugudan looks like a school talent show that got together a week before their stage.

5. [+248, -15] Before Gugudan's debut, they did all that media play using IOI's name but now that the debut isn't showing good results, they're blaming IOI for overexposing the members' image ã…‹ã…‹

6. [+249, -26] Gugudan's members, outfits, everything just seems so backwards and outdated. The only reason Gugudan and DIA are still in the game is because of IOI's fame. If not for IOI at all, both groups would've disappeared after a week.

7. [+159, -7] If IOI's image has been overexposed already, then what does that make groups who've been promoting for 7-8 years? DIA and Gugudan are struggling right now because they pissed off IOI fans, you can't blame the IOI buff falling off for their flop. They should be lucky they even got to use IOI's name to last as long as they did.

8. [+159, -11] Gugudan was just... so underprepared. Their song, choreography, the member visuals... it all just feels like some amateur Japanese idol group.

9. [+130, -6] There's a reason why Park Jin Young is staying quiet with Jun Somi right now. Shouldn't have rushed these debuts when IOI just barely debuted themselves.

10. [+104, -5] JellyFish is making it really obvious that this is their first girl group ã…‹ã…‹ should've made Kim Sejung the center with Kang Mina but instead they put some kid with no public recognition at all in the center... and their song sucks too.

11. [+111, -9] The only winner here is JYP ã…‹ã…‹ I wonder how they'll debut Somi ã…‹ã…‹

In regards to Gugudan, I think IOI is its kryptonite…
Now let me make it clear, I am NOT crapping on Gugudan at all! However, I’m just saying that they [Jellyfish Entertainment] rushed Gugudan to try and ride the IOI fame and did them a huge injustice, the girls weren’t prepared enough to debut, if they [JE] had waited a couple of months more and given the girls more time then it would have been much better for the girls, their first stage was terrible and even fans agree with that! If the girls hadn’t been so rushed they would have debuted really well. I think their comeback will be much better after they’ve had a more appropriate time to get things together.

Being the first girl group from a mid tier company, Gu9udan's debut is so fucking away from being a failure.

Next knet stupidity please.

The funny part is that every other day some gugudan fans would post something about how successful gugudan are on OH.

Because they are. ;) We have receipts hunty

Stupid. If they put Sejeong / Mina in the center instead of Hana, they would say that they are riding off Sejeong's fame. :har:

And yes. This is their first gg alr.

Gugudan didn't fail though?

Aren't they selling pretty well and they charted highly for a new group.

Exactly.

DIA exceeded all their previous efforts. They sold double the number of their 1st album and their mv is going to be quicker to 1 million than 'Somehow'. Chaeyeon is getting jobs so MBK is getting their cut from that. So pd 101/IOI was good for them.

Gugudan was just a lot of weird decisions. Jellyfish lied on several occasions regarding Gugudan/IOI, they chose a weird concept, the name is awkward, they did no promotions for the girls who didn't go on pd 101. Compared to IOI and the expectations the public had for them from their efforts in Produce 101 they're struggling. But without Produce 101/ IOI they would probably be selling only 2k albums total instead of 8k in the first week. They wouldn't be getting 2nd/3rd on music shows. Sejeong wouldn't be on shows. They'd really be in the nugu tier and they'd be struggling a whole lot more. They had a decent debut.

Would it have been better to wait for early 2017? Probably. Some of the girls could have gotten more exposure/training and Hana would still be the same age.

Those "receipts" are flopping numbers that don't chart. Those 10k album cant save them.

If 10k album cant save them.

Then the 53k downloads, 720k streams, 12k physicals will do. As well as the million views, and the #1 nomination. And placing #2 behind Taeyeon on Gaon.

Placing what rank on charts is as irrelevant as it gets. It's all about the number.

53k dl and 730k are bad. How can you even bring that out as receipts? Do you even know what successful number are?

Obviously you don't. Look at Gfriend, twice and RV's debut numbers. Heck, look at lovelyz's too.

Refrain from using successful and gugudan together. It's embarrassing.

I wouldn't call Gugudan's debut a failure, but I can acknowledge it was disappointing. I say that as a fan of the group. Sejeong's, and to a much lesser extent Mina's, popularity should have given them a big leg up. I agree with knetz. The problem isn't overexposure. It's a rushed debut and a subpar single. Jellyfish rushed Gugudan's debut and made a lot of questionable decisions (intro, logo, concept, music, styling, etc.). However, anyone who was expecting Gugudan to hit daebak, sell 50k+ albums, and achieve a PAK on debut is kidding themselves. They're doing... okay. The song isn't doing well but they have a growing fanbase and that's what matters most. The test will be how they comeback. Jellyfish is slowly fixing their mistakes so I have faith they'll do right by Gugudan in the end.

Jellyfish just didn't play their cards right....

But Pledis aren't even rushing. Pledis showing Jellyfish and MBK on how to do it right. They are doing a hella good job they are exposing the other nugu members through concerts etc while Nayoung and Pinky are still promoting with IOI/gaining more attention. They are building a good foundation and interest in this gg.
