[in] the billowing red dust, dusk draws near. [in] the rustling autumn wind, the daylight sinks.
I rise, shutting the door that had been [left open] waiting for you.
In this moment when [my] knocking dislodges the burnt up wick and causes it to fall like a bright flower[1], beneath the moon, the black and the white [chess stones] are in disorder.
That is when come to realize that it is indeed true that a person who is involved in a situation cannot see it clearly[2].

Counting white hairs, missing the years of youth, [thinking of] the most careless person in [this] melancholy.
Remnants of wine tokens[3] and old drinking vessels are only fit to remind [me] of [my] solitude in this world.

From a time when [we] did not know how to improvise and adapt, to the years when [we] no longer dared to be simple,
What did you and I once offer in sacrifice in order to hold a memorial ceremony for [our] innocence?
[in] the mutual understanding between [our] hearts, [our thoughts] have yet to be said aloud. [but our hearts are] sometimes far apart, sometimes close together.

An actor's lines in a play are what fools all those who are full of affection. Loyalty and faithfulness, [on the other hand], are what fools the whole world.
You ask me, which type of person will be in this life?
[A person's] success or failure should only be judged once the lid has been closed on his coffin. So what need is there, when things have reached this stage,
To keep so firmly in mind that time when you turned away in silence?

[With] a shake of the sleeve and a lifting of the whip, the light dust was severed. [We] wordlessly parted ways [beneath] the shade of the green aspens.
That was you, unwilling to even look back.
Yesterday, with hands clasped behind [my] back, trod upon clouds high in the sky[4]. Today, alone, exit Yanmen.
Power and glory are illusory for a lifetime, real for a moment.

When this cold wine has stained my lips, [it is] as if that view of your back has eroded [my] heart.
The residual warmth is so real. Lighting the lamp, the frost and the snow have already shared a pillow.
In the dream-entangled hour, who has knocked awake [the dweller behind] this door?

[Those] without affection should not ask after [others]. [in this] vast world, [people] do not become deeply attached to one another.
You've said before, what is insignificant is us.
All day, the lone shadow faces the lone person. When the night comes, the lone fur coat faces the lone grave.
A chess stone is set down upon the board. [You and I], people of two worlds, face the dusk.

T/N:

[1] 敲è½ç¯èб: This borrows from the second line in 《约客》, a poem by Southern Song Dynasty poet 赵师秀 (Zhao Shixiu): 有约ä¸æ¥è¿‡å¤œåŠï¼Œé—²æ•²æ£‹åè½ç¯èŠ±ã€‚(Trans: It is past midnight and yet the invited guest still hasn't come. I boredly knock the chess stones [against the board], dislodging the burnt up bit of wick in the oil lamp.) So this knocking has nothing to do with the door in the previous line of lyrics and instead relates to "the black and the white" of the following half of this line of lyrics.

[2] 当局者迷: It is one half of the saying 当局者迷,æ—观者清。(Trans: The person involved is confused; the onlooker sees clearly.) It initially described a chess player (a person involved in the game) vs a person who watches the game (an uninvolved onlooker).

[3] é…’ç¹: These wine tokens were used to tally how many rounds of wine have been drunk during a banquet.

[4] é’云: Literally blue clouds, it refers to the sky. Metaphorically, it also describes an official position of high power.
