It's been almost two years since Red Velvet debuted. What do you think about their level of success?

I remember when they first debuted I thought they'd be at least at Twice's popularity level by now. Happiness was such a fresh song, the members were beautiful and talented, and the gradient hair idea was genius. It still continues to be my favorite era of theirs. But honestly speaking, they're not the top girl group of the new generation. I'd put them in 3rd, tied with Mamamoo, and behind newer groups like Twice and Gfriend. They're decently popular among kpop fans, but they really haven't had a hit song and it seems like their growth is stagnating. It seems like most of their fans liked other SM groups before them and are partly there just because of the SM brand.

What do you think SM did 'wrong'? What could they have done 'right'? Where do you think they'll go from here? Will they have their breakout song and be loved by the public, or will they continue to release moderately popular songs that mostly only their fans will like? What does this mean for SM as a brand in the future? Will Nct and other groups follow the same middling levels of success? Will I ever stop asking questions?

Enlighten me.

Their next comeback will be important .

G friend mamamoo and twice all had a successful song this year and are getting more popular and establishing themselves because of it . While rv didnt do well because sm messed up but I think they can do well with a new comeback

As a RV fan I agree with the points you made. All your questions were super valid.

i think if SM plays their cards right RV could still have that 'hit' song and break through to that top tier (of popularity and general public awareness), but if not, I see them achieving great things as a solid group that has super good physicals and decent digitals. I think they need more exposure tbh, but I can see that they're already carving niches for the individual members.

I honestly think they're one of the most well-rounded groups to debut in the new generation and no one can predict the future (especially the volatile nature of k-pop, where things are 'trending' and scandals topple potential hits). Personally I think they're a song (or two) shy of domination, but that's just me.

SM didn't do anything wrong, its just that they debuted at a horrible time.

If Twice debuted in 2014 they would be significantly less successful tbh.

Their Velvet concepts are never that successful. That's the only thing stopping them.

Who knows? Their summer comeback song might be the biggest kpop hit of 2k16.

They definitely have what it takes. Wendy and Seulgi's powerhouse vocals, Yeri's flawless face/center abilities, all 5 of their visuals, Irene's rap skill (for an idol), Seulgi and Irene's flawless dance ability.

Literally the only thing they need is a BIG hit. Otherwise they're gonna end up like SHINee - they're definitely successful but nobody knows them for that One Hit. Which is technically a good thing in the long run but it doesn't look that good in the present.

They did very decently with Dumb Dumb, but I expected them to hit even higher tbh. They don't promote as often as other rookie GGs because SM has a ton of groups on its roster, which can be a bit of an issue, but on the other hand, it's also SM so they have indiviudal activities and some visibility as well. OOTN was pretty obviously a filler comeback and I didn't expect anything to come from it, but I think their next comeback will be pretty decisive as to what kind of group they're going to be and how much SM will put into them. I'm mostly positive because they've been pretty visible these past few months still, so I think they're going to get a hit this year.

This is my perspective:

I don't think SM had big plans for Red Velvet from the start. They just didn't want to waste female trainees they had, so Red Velvet has achieved their goal to a point. SM is waiting for SNSD to really fall from their top position (sounds horrible I know) before putting their all into a girl group and try to achieve another SNSD level gg.

the velvet was a mistake tbh.  dumb dumb is their biggest hit right now, over 1mil downloads, and sm decided to go with a concept that they know isn't as well received... a lot of momentum from dumb dumb ended up being lost bc of ootn.  but they can get it back with this next comeback.

Can SM even make a Gee level hit at this point? Their last big hit song was Growl in 2013 and even that didn't rival the success of Gee/Sorry sorry/etc

no sm's last big hit was taeyeon's "i"...

SM debuted them almost like they had no choice, because if they didn't, Irene/Seulgi/Wendy (and maybe Joy) would have left and debuted for other companies.

Yeri probably could have been 'saved' for the next gg, but honestly, she fits the maknae role just fine.

Dumb dumb was close to being a hit tbh.

But what SM isn't doing right is actually promoting them properly. Compared to the other groups, RV do not have as much exposure on mainstream TV which is an important factor in gaining recognition, even on V-app they have like 12 videos and twice has like 100+.
