Jack Dawson 106
I have always wondered this. Take 2pm and Big Bang for instance. 2PM used to show off their bodies a lot; they became well known for this. However one of their most successful songs (Hands up) was promoted without emphasizing their bodies. However, their most recent songs bring attention to yet again to their banging bods, and these songs are being met with lukewarm responses. This may be happening quite possibly because the male demographic feels alienated by the concept of these songs. Now take into account Big Bang. They usually seem to try their best to make themselves look as far from the ideal look and fashion a handsome Korean man would have. Even if they show off their bodies the focus usually goes to hair or some strange piece of clothing rather than whatever flesh is visible. Does their aversion to showing off their looks correlate with their number of males fans?

Perfect Chaos 300
as a guy myself, i'd rather NOT see guys be shirtless around. of course however, i prefer music over looks for guys cuz that doesn't even matter to me. if the song sounds good, i could care less about whether the guys are good looking or not. regardless, the guys won't appeal to me the same way they could to female fans also 2PM's recent comeback was made with lukewarm responses because they've been gone for a long, long time, and they've lost the strength they had two years ago cuz of their hiatus

sergel 3,568
Could be. Female fans in Korea tend to graviate a little more towards girls who aren't into a style that comes off as super sexy. I know Rainbow's latest comeback was the least sexiest, but ti gained them the most female fans. Part of it lies within judging people similar to you harsher (gender, sex, age, race, religion, etc.). Some stems from jealousy. I don't know if it's an emphasis on bodies per se, but putting too much on it to the point that the bodies outshine the song and dance may be what turns people, especially of the same sex, off. Arent they wearing T-Shirts and Jeans tho?The dance emphasized their bums though.
denizen mars 5,911
That's so ridiculous... if that were a legitimate reason to hate a group, I'd be disgusted by 2pm and Big Bang's shirtless photos as well. But I guess...people like what they like.
HvD 3,431
I don't think it will alienate male fans. Its not like the "ripping shirt" thing was meant for male fans in the first place, they are meant to be fanservice for female fans. I don't normally care about visuals, because music is always my focus. If they are great singers, I could care less about them ripping their shirts off. Chrome 3,157
honestly i dont care as long as the music is good if they spend their whole time ripping off their shirts, I'll just listen and not watch if the music is good Taeyang can take his top off and dougie as much as he wants, I probably wont watch it, but I will continue to listen to him
shiinnaa 107
bods are just part of bonus, and as long they show it wit elegance, me, female-noona fan would like it.. but ofc, music is the most precious to listen.. however there are lotsa fans (either male or even female) can't see when idols produce high quality music due their shirtless.. so i think guy group shirtless don't alienate male fans cz i have mind that male fans would be more appriciated abt musics... Kashmir 83
it depends on the manner that they do it. i am a bit offput when 2PM when they do it, because they seem to RELY on it, for some kind of effect. you can instantly feel that they know they are being hot, and that female fans are drooling over them. I'm not alienated, I just think it's stupid, I'm similarly offput by sexy girlgroup concepts. it's not even about gender. did it have an effect on me that Taeyang was being shirtless in Fantastic Baby or GD in Crayon? No. Because, just like you mentioned on in your post, it wasn't the main focus.
ryokonicheiress 5,833
If shirtless alienates male fans- wouldn't fan service (which so many male groups do)? It may alienate some but I think in general no. Majority aren't there for the bodies only but for the music.
Jeffrey Jung 19,680
it depends but mostly they don't really care about bods but most guys gets like "EW DAFUQ" when they see SM's boy groups clothing / Big Bang's clothing (2012 era) or anything Weird from GD Honorable mentions : Skirt-Pants (yes SM i'm talking about your boy groups stylists)

epos 57
Actually, man never mind another man showing off his body. this has nothing to do with gay, think a girl seeing Beyonce/Angelina, we are want to have that body but for many reasons, we can only envy. and no, shirt ripping is fine with us, if you have the body--think Hulk Hogan, WWE, Arnold, Stallone, The Rock and all the super heroes. If anything, those sissy/flowery boys(not gay) are the most despise by us.
Hikazumi 38
duh? For title songs, the only one that had them showing a little more is Heartbeat, and that's like what... the ending of two performances? =O Heartbeat did really good even before the shirt thing Ô.o Also, yep. 2pm does have a good number of male fans, I know quite a good amount of kpop male listeners that find them pretty cool. They think of them as manly. The main thing that can "alienate" male fans is the flower-boy concept without doubt. Think as a male, how can you be watching a male acting all cute and keep your face straight? xD Then taking off your shirt is something really normal between hip-hop and those type of songs, aren't also those type of styles the ones that have more fan boys? Sotsugyou 111
I don't feel alienated. Male groups are usually targeted towards females anyway. 2PM ALWAYS have their shirts off and the only one in Big Bang who seems to be shirtless 24/7 is Taeyang. Most groups tend to keep their shirts on, thus having to emphasize on other visuals or the vocals and dancing.

Trend 34
I dislike it when artists use their exposed torsos for publicity. Like they need it to sell their music. It makes me question their music talents.
Kudou~Sinichi 234
i dunno -_- .my bias get a lot more fanboys since 2011 n am happy with that, since its what they want.now they get it .stripping is unnecessary coz without stripping they still can be sexy
viva 882
I don't think it bothers general kpop fans that much, but I do think it's partly what allows certain groups (mostly just Big Bang) to appeal to a wider audience than most kpop groups. Though it's not about shirt ripping specifically, more the fact that most male groups aim to appeal to females. Could be through going shirtless, or sexy dancing, or cute concepts etc, but your average male won't go for that. BB are more gender neutral and don't really capitalize on their looks to get female fans. As a girl I'm totally here for the sexy dancing though lol. SEWER RAT 10,617
Most fanboys steer away from flower boy groups like SHINee or B1A4, they don't care as much if a boy group goes shirtless. it's more like music or gtfo.
