[XP Interview â‘ ] 'Comeback as 5' BEAST talks about Highlight

 

 

Idol BEAST has entered field for 8 years. They will accept the changes modestly, have not lost their persistence and confidence.

 

BEAST announced their comeback 3^rd Full Album ‘Highlight’ after one year on 4 July 00:00. Song producing team ‘Good Life’ comprising Yong Junhyung and song producer Kim Taejoo has produced a pop R&B title track ‘Ribbon’. They have swept 1^st on album sales and received 1^st on varies music charts, showcasing BEAST underlying strength.

 

They’ve tasted mellowness as soon as they comeback, however the process to it wasn’t solely filled with pleasantness. BEAST has changed from a 6 member team to 5 after Hyunseung’s withdrawal. on the 4^th, BEAST held a comeback memorial interview at Cube Entertainment office. 5 members from BEAST responded frankly on the topic relating to the change, the present and also their future.

 

Congratulation on your comeback. Please talk about your thoughts on the song release and all-kill on charts.

(Yoon Dujun) Coming back after a year, it’s a truth that I was nervous before the release of music. We have settled the album before leaving for the Japan tour. The truth is there was a considerable burden on us, fortunately, it seems like many has given likes (to the song). I hope I was more heart fluttered than being worried at that point of time.

 

(Yang Yoseob) I feel good. I’m immensely grateful for the many who showed love. It was when the realization starts setting in. We hope to show a good appearance.

 

The reason behind feeling burdensome.

(Yoon Dujun) I feel like this every releases, however it felt especially long for this release. To be honest, the previous album was a period that wasn’t able to satisfy many. We hope to come back faster with an album and not being able to do so made us most worried and shaky. The heart flutters that can be felt now, it felt like it could be something we could show on stage. As we’re on our Japan tour, there were many times we felt “it seems funâ€, it’s the heart flutters that makes us want to hurry stand back on our comeback stage.

 

The comeback album title as ‘Highlight’. Tell us your point of view, was it a title already determined?

(Yong Junhyung) It’s not determined from the start. While writing the intro of ‘Highlight’, I had thoughts of wouldn’t it be great if the album title could be ‘Highlight’. More than it being the best time now, we should not have nothing important. I wrote lyrics about a time that could not be returned and released to the members for their opinions. I voiced out ‘It’ll be great if we choose this title because of the content featured’, and the members has all agreed on it. More than having the significance ‘it’s our highlight this time’, we settled with ‘let’s create our highlight’.

 

It’s a comeback after a while, is there any reason behind settling with a ballad title track?

(Yong Junhyung) More than it being a ballad, it’s the genre of urban pop. Many people in the country has thought that it’s a ballad. BEAST is able to relay the emotions well and there are possibility for a dance choreography. It’s a genre that many can feel its charm while watching it or listening to it, thus we have settled for it. I thought, won’t we be able to create a unique position through such genre. Following my heart’s will, I chose upon this song.

 

‘Ribbon’ has lyrics showing farewell and tough times etc. Does it express the situation of Jang Hyunseung’s withdrawal from the group?

(Yong Junhyung) It was in our mind to include the situation or anything along the line. Looking at one way or another on how we could unveil the theme of Ribbon, the lyrics came out like this. When I was composing, I input how I felt inside, and mixed in the emotions. I don’t eliminate the existence of relation to the situation, but it’s tough to say that the situation is 100% alike to the lyrics. While myself, and our members prepared for the album, it seems like a song that is relatable to the situation we are undergoing.

 

Is there any reason you chose ‘Ribbon’ (the word) to bring out the theme of the title track?

(Yong Junhyung) The resemblance of the word (to the theme), and what it symbolizes is interesting. I could picture it when I listen to the lyrics, therefore I had a though that it would be great if it could match the great lyrics. The thought of the ribbon on bathing gown could be easily get loosen. At that time, I really didn’t do anything apart from writing ‘Ribbon’ down on a memo. There are a lot of metaphors here and there that could be used. However, with the thought that it’ll be great if the person listening to it could think ‘Ah, it gets loosen like thisâ€, it puts a stop to the worries I had.

 

There are saying that ‘Ribbon’ had the similar meaning as ‘Reborn’.

(Yong Junhyung) That saying also came out when we first brought the song to the company. However, we really haven’t thought of it once. If we were to put this meaning to such situation, it would have been childish. Therefore, there isn’t such thoughts. As I’ve said previously, that’s how I thought of Ribbon.

 

Please explain the stage choreography and concept.

(Yong Junhyung) There isn’t much formation that can hold 5, thus we broke out of our framework, did our best to not show the usual but something fresh. That we could be fresh among ourselves, that we are tough. I hope it’s correct like this (laughs). This has to be well caught by the camera director, not ‘I did it wrong’ but to think it as something fresh. To create the exact atmosphere as the song title. We hope to hear from people seeing us as tough with words saying the choreography is pretty and that it matches well with the song. It will be great if it’s given lots of likes.

 

Apart from Yong Junhyung, the members participated in album composing. Yoseob’s first composed song ‘Practicing’ is a love song, is it a story of yours?

(Yang Yoseob) I still couldn’t produce a song perfectly by myself, the joint composer passed me the track and let me input my own story. More than putting in my own thoughts, I wrote it in 10 minutes. Making the melody and singing the lyrics as soon as it comes into mind, a sweet love song came out like this. More than it’s my story, it’s a story by all of the joint composers.

 

Gikwang composed the 11^th track, ‘Goodnight’.

(Lee Gikwang) While thinking of BEAST album, I composed. It came out while thinking of a song that would match BEAST well, it’s a song with minimalist style. The content of the song is like a lullaby to your girlfriend or someone you like. The reactions came off good after letting my friends listen to it. I did it while thinking it would be great if people can listen to it as the album’s ending song.

 

It’s not we can’t talk about Jang Hyunseung.

(Son Dongwoon) I think it’s the differences in disposition. We don’t do ballad a lot. For this instance, Hyunseung hyung like R&B songs and through his solo and Trouble Maker promotions, we has showed interest in doing similar songs. Our team has a certain colour, and with the differences in disposition that doesn’t match, regretfully, he has withdrew.

 

(Yang Yoseob) Firstly, I find it a pity. To the fans, about us showing sides as 5, it seems like it’s a fear that happened. We have caused worried and there were also people who have sensed it through our gaze. We thought, shouldn’t we give a solution to that worry? I’m really sorry to the fans who loved us as 6. The lovely energy that this friend has carried has slowly decreased. Because of that, there isn’t any means of showing BEAST without feeling a sense of pity. It caused a little strain on everyone, and we thought wouldn’t we have to fill up that gap? We are working hard. It will be great if you can acknowledge this hard work. We too, support the choice of this friend. No matter solo or other various activities, we hope you could give him lots of recognition and support.

 

If there are any topics that the members talk about most during the comeback preparation?

(Yoon Dujun) As we lack one, we thought of giving power as a team. We talk a lot about how we could work hard to let our fans or people who watch us not feel the areas we’re lacking. No matter the choreography or the songs, there was a big change. Even through modification, it’s true that there will still be a sense of emptiness. We talk about how we could do our best till it could be less seen.

 

(Son Dongwoon) Because there was a big change, it seems like we have put in more care and worked harder this time round. Although it couldn’t be help that the withdrawal of one member has caused an emptiness, the five of us have prepared with the desire to create performance of a greater perfection. People who watch will give their own judgement, even so, we really worked hard preparing.

I am glad that Junhyung is the one who answered this question, and I feel comforted after reading his answer..

Seems to me, they didn't really want JS to go, but they respected his decision.

I'm glad they provide some sort of closure though it may just run deeper than just 'musical differences'. I mean out of all the members, hyunseung gained the most from TM & his solo. Those k-nets who downplayed hyunseung's role in the group need to read this.
